How can we choose a right book There is a word you can depend on when you're in a library or a bookstore. All you need to remember is“P. I. C. K”. It means Purpose(目标), Interest, Comprehend(了解), and Know the Words.
P=Purpose. Know your purpose for reading before you choose a book. Why are you looking for a book—reading for pleasure or trying to learn something Reading silently for yourself or reading out loud for someone else Most often, your purpose can be found with a quick answer.
I=Interest. With many books in the library or the bookstore today, there must be something out there for everyone. If you are interested in cars, you can read books about the history of racing or race car drivers. Even if you have only a little time to choose books, you can decide by looking at the front cover or having a quick look at photos.
C=Comprehend. It's important to choose a book right for your level(水平). If you read books at Level A, for example, you'd better not choose a book at Level D. If the book isn't labeled (标记) with a level, you don't need to read the book from beginning to end. Instead, choose a page(页) and then you can decide whether the book is a right level for you by asking yourself:
Did I understand what I just read
Do I remember what I read
Was I able to read most of the words
This brings us to our final letter: K.
K=Know the Words. Readers should be able to understand most of the words on the page. The key is the“Five Finger Rule”. It shows the relationship between the number of unknown words and the difficulty level of a book:
0~1 unknown word=too easy
2~3 unknown words=just right
4~5 unknown words=too difficult
How to choose a right book
P=Purpose. When you choose a book, you should know your purpose for reading _____1_____. Asking yourself some questions can help you find it out.
I=Interest. *All books you are interested in are _____2_____ inthe library or the bookstore. If you don't have much time to choose books, you can have a look at the book's front cover and photos.
C=Comprehend. *The books you read should _____3_____ you well. You needn't read the _____4_____ book, but just read a page to see if the book is difficult.
