It was Jennifer Williams' mother who got her interested in books. A librarian, she read to her three children every day. "Until we went to college," Williams told , a local news site.
When Williams, now 54, became an elementary school teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had limited access to books.
"It's very obvious to teachers of young children which kids are read to and which are not," she said. "It's obvious at the end of the first day of school." To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of a city event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children's books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that. Most.
“I was like, ‘Anybody could do that’,” she said. “I wanted to do something that's going to stretch my faith, my work principle, my everything.”
So she raised the number considerably by setting a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don't complain in the bleachers(露天看台)if you aren't willing to work hard out on the field.”
So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long, as news of Williams' project spread, strangers started leaving collections of books on her doorway. As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools—only 92,000 more to reach her goal! And she's not slowing down. It's too important for kids with few options.
"Reading can take you anywhere," she told CNN. "You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything."
21. What made Jennifer Williams fall in love with reading
A. Her teacher's help. B. Her mother's influence.
C. Her desire for knowledge. D. Her love for teaching.
22. What is the purpose of Jennifer Williams' project
A. To promote reading nationwide.
B. To inspire her students to work hard.
C. To draw public attention to the city event.
D. To make more kids have access to reading.
23. Which of the following can best describe Jennifer Williams
A. Intelligent and caring. B. Creative and responsible.
C. Generous and determined. D. Independent and confident.

An international team of scientists has discovered a stellar black hole in Earth’s “cosmic backyard” containing the mass of 70 suns.
It’s a black hole that forms after stars die, collapse, and explode. Researchers had long believed that the size limit was only 20 times the mass of our sun because as these stars die, they lose most of their mass through explosions that force matter and gas swept away by stellar winds.
This theory has now been toppled by LB-1, the newly discovered black hole. Located about 15,000 light years away, it has a mass 70 times greater than our sun, according to a press release from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy (星系), according to most of the present models of stellar evolution,” said Liu Jifeng, head of the team that made the discovery.
“LB-1 is twice as massive as what we thought possible. Now theorists will have to take up the challenge of explaining its formation.”
Scientists are now scratching their heads at how LB-1 got so huge.
The team has proposed some theories. LB-1’s sheer size suggests that it “was not formed from the collapse of only one star,” the study said — instead, it could potentially be two smaller black holes orbiting each other.
Another possibility is that it formed from “fallback supernova (超行星).” This is when a supernova — the last stage of an exploding star — ejects (喷射) material during the explosion, which then falls back into the supernova, creating a black hole. This fallback formation is theoretically possible, but scientists have never been able to prove or observe it.
There are several types of black holes and stellar black holes like LB-1 are on the smaller side, according to NASA. Supermassive black holes are much bigger — they can be billions of times the mass of our sun.
Scientists believe supermassive black holes may have connection with the formation of galaxies, as they often exist at the center of the mass star stems but it is still not clear exactly how, or which form first.
24. According to scientists, what might account for the formation of LB-1
A. The material ejected in the explosion of a supernova.
B. The smaller black holes moving around each other.
C. The evolution of the solar system.
D. The collapse of a certain star.
25. What does the word “toppled” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Confirmed B. Strengthened. C. Overturned. D. Refused.
26. What is the purpose of writing this article
A. To inform readers of the basic knowledge about black holes.
B. To share the recent development of the black hole discovery.
C. To show the importance of discovering black holes for science.
D. To report achievements scientists have made in black hole theory.
27. What might be the best title for the passage
A. The Latest Discovery of Galaxies
B. Proposed Theories of Black Holes
C. The Possible Formation of the Black Holes
D. Biggest Stellar-mass Black Hole Discovered

In Singapore, buses have been given the green light to find new ways to reduce emissions(排放)and improve the air quality of their services.
Last month, GWS Living Art, a company specializing in city green structures installed(安装)green roofs on 10 public buses. While a bus might not seem like the typical location for a green roof, the installation could provide environmental and economic benefits. According to research by Michigan State University, green roofs are great at reducing polluting emissions, providing spaces for nature and cooling cities through the water that evaporates(蒸发)from their leaves and by shading surfaces that would otherwise take in heat.
"While the influence of green plants on buildings has been well recorded, much less is known about the effects of them on moving vehicles," said Tan Chun Liang, a research fellow at National University of Singapore who advises the "Garden on the Move" bus campaign. This bus campaign is part of a three-month study to test whether green plants can help lower the temperature inside the buses and reduce the amount of fuel needed to power the air-conditioning. Liang hopes the research will provide a possible solution for cities to fight against global warming and the Urban Heat Island(UHI)effect-when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby countryside, due to the heat produced and taken in by industry, traffic and building materials.
To make Singapore a "Garden City," the government has joint this bus campaign with other green projects suck-as the Green Mark Scheme which aims for 80% of buildings to be green by 2030 and Gardens by the Bay, an eco-friendly garden featuring solar-powered "supertrees" and over 1.5 million plants.

A. To make the city look more beautiful.
B. To provide more space for plants to live in.
C. To attract more people to use public transportation.
D. To test green plants’ environmental and economic benefits.
29. According to the text, why can green plants lower the temperature in cities
A. They can clean the air. B. They can reflect sunlight.
C. They can absorb greenhouse gases. D. They can provide water and shade.
30. How many projects are mentioned to make Singapore a "Garden City"
A. 2 B. 3
C. 4. D. 5.
31. What's the best title for the text
A. Green Roofs on Buses

Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered” on Friday. Conservationists (自然环境保护者) said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala a globally recognized symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, had been listed as “vulnerable (易危)” on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented (史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment, Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus $50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas’ new status (地位) but blamed Australia’s failure to protect the species so far. “Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF-Australia conservation scientist Stuart Blanch. “Today’s decision is welcome, but it won’t stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it’s accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can’t afford any more clearing,” she said. “The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added, “we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging (伐木).”
Australia’s koalas had been living on a “knife edge” even before the “Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon (象征),” Sharrad said, “The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing, and seriously deal with the impacts of climate change.”
32. Why did Environmentalists welcome the koala’s new status
A. This would stop koalas from extinction.
B. This could lead to action to protect koalas.
C. They could blame the government’s failure.
D. They may have time to recover koala habitats.
33. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. Land-clearing costs a lot of money.
B. Homes for koalas should be offered.
C. Land-clearing can cause koalas to die out.
D. No money can be spent on wildlife protection.
34. How does Sharrad feel about the present state of Koalas
A. Concerned B. Disappointed C. Frightened D. Satisfied
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With seemingly endless streams of tweets, Instagram photos and Facebook feeds, society can seem glued to their cellphones. 36 It’s important that we connect, share and learn with social media, but it’s also important that we do these things responsibly.
Think about future impacts of what you post. What we post never truly goes away on the Internet, so it’s important to take a second look at why we are posting something. Many times we snap a picture and then click “post” without thinking of future impacts. 37 Make sure you’re following trustworthy news sources. In the age of “fake news” we are flooded with hundreds of news stories every day. Make sure the news sources you’re following are confirmed and reliable. 38 Make sure you have all of the facts straight before you share or comment on a story.
39 On average, we spend 2 hours and 22 minutes on social media every day. Recording the time we spend on each of our social media apps help us better understand how much time we are spending staring at our devices. If you’re spending too much time scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, consider setting limits for yourself.
Understand you’re often seeing highlights. Many people share their accomplishments and milestones on social media because they’re proud and want to show that to the world.
40 It’s easy to compare ourselves to others, especially when we are going through tough times. But remember everyone goes through ups and downs and social media doesn’t always accurately represent that.
A. Avoid always reading things on social media.
B. Don’t take everything you read at face value.
C. Social media is deep-rooted in our everyday lives.
D. Be mindful of the time you’re spending on social media.
E. Consider why you are posting something and its influence.

When I was a twelve-year-old girl, I was so addicted to chatting online that some people even called me CyberSara. My mom, a lawyer, always complained that I spent too much time chatting with my Internet friends.
One day I got an instant message from a kid I didn’t know. His name was Bradley, who said he was twelve and lived in New York. He asked if he could be my secret friend, and I thought that seemed pretty cool. Within a few days’ chatting, I found that we both loved to play soccer, even though I didn’t play as much as I used to. To my great joy, we both loved playing computer games very much.
Every day, Bradley and I chatted and emailed each other. We became best friends. He was interesting and seemed kind of smart—actually, much smarter than the typical twelve-year-old boys I knew. I really liked chatting with him. He told me he really liked me. Bradley kept telling me New York was a cool place to live and emailed me amazing pictures of extremely tall skyscrapers(摩天大楼). He asked me where I lived. I told him I lived in Tampa. One day, Bradley shared good news with me that he was coming to Tampa with his parents. He invited me to have a secret meeting and go for ice cream with him in the ice-cream shop near my school. Eager to find what my secret Internet friend was like, I promised to keep it a secret, not telling my parents about our plan.
I was excited that I was finally going to meet Bradley after months of chatting. However, he refused to send me a picture of himself, saying he didn’t want to ruin the surprise. It made me quite confused. Was there something wrong with him Was he a weird (奇怪的) guy who was not confident enough to show a picture of himself But he said everyone in his school thought he was the cutest boy in his class, so I thought he had to be normal. The next day, I accidentally told Mom that I would meet my Internet friend alone. Upon hearing that, she began annoying me with a ton of questions, with her face full of anxiety. I eventually told her that Bradley was going to take me for ice cream near my school. “No. Never will you meet a stranger all alone. You are just a 12-year-old girl!”, mom was beside herself with rage when I showed my determination to go. So angry was she that I had no choice but to bring her together. We prepared and drove to the ice-cream shop.

八、续写
The moment we entered the ice-cream shop, there was no one but a weird adult(成年人). Noticing his strange appearance, I was enveloped by a sense of fear and clenched mom’s hands tightly. “Who are you Are you Bradley ” asked my mom. Shocked and speechless, the man sprang from the chair, attempting to flee away. But it was too late. Mom grasped his hand with all her might and asked me to call the police. Finally, my plan with the secret Internet friend ended up with a narrow escape from being cheated. Later, My mother patted my shoulder and comforted me, “ Don't be afraid. From now on, remember not to easily trust people on the internet.” After that, whenever I recalled the unusual experience, fear still lingered in my mind mixed with a sense of relief. Neither should we meet Internet friend without informing parents, nor should we share private information on the Internet.
