A retired United States soldier named Terry McGlade once served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his dog Major is a hero. He was specially trained to sense when McGlade was about to have a seizure, get his phone and dial 911 for help.
When Major had recently sensed an incident about to happen, McGlade collapsed and hit the floor. Major was able to get to McGlade’s phone, and more or less bite on the phone which is specially set up so that when multiple buttons are pressed and held in, it goes into emergency call mode, and dial 911.
“He was actually able to get my phone out of my pocket,” McGlade said.
The 911 operators who got the call from Major said they never heard him bark or anything. However, they could hear what sounded like a confused man in the background, and did get quite suspicious after quite a few calls from McGlade’s cell phone kept coming in. Quite clearly, Major was using his leg and also stepping on the screen to get the phone to dial for help.
After Major was sure someone would be on their way to help, he then made his way out to the front of the house to wait. When the police and ambulance arrived, he led them into the house and right to McGlade, still in distress.
“I probably would have been in severe trouble if he hadn’t called,” McGlade said.
McGlade was taken to the hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation. But thanks to his best friend, and now hero of the day, Major, he is feeling much better, and will make a full recovery with little risk of lasting damage from this particular incident.
24.How did Major manage to make the phone go into emergency call mode?
A.By keeping barking at the other side of the phone.
B.By sending a text message to the 911 operator.
C.By biting and stepping on the buttons of the phone.
D.By seeking somebody else nearby for help.
25.What do we know about the incident?
A.Major has made one call to the 911 center before the ambulance came.
B.Operators in the 911 center were confused by Major’s calls.
C.Major guided the police and the doctor to the house to save McGlade.
D.McGlade has completely recovered.
26.According to the text, which of the following is the most suitable to describe Major?
A.Brave. B.Calm. C.Serious. D.Smart.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.A Soldier’s Life with a Dog B.How a Dog Saved Its Owner’s Life
C.Dogs Are Our Loyal Friends D.A Retired Soldier and His Dog

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change . As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and white anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”
28.Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?
A.To remember the birth of jazz. B.To protect cultural diversity.
C.To encourage people to study music. D.To recognize the value of jazz.
29.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Jazz becoming more accessible. B.The production of jazz growing faster.
C.Jazz being less popular with the young. D.The jazz audience becoming larger.
30.What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?
A.It will disappear gradually. B.It remains black and white.
C.It should keep up with the times. D.It changes every 50 years.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Exploring the Future of Jazz B.The Rise and Fall of Jazz
C.The Story of a Jazz Musician D.Celebrating the Jazz Day

Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5 m long and weigh over 400 kg, occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche—we revere(敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams. Ask the tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National Park what they most hope to see, and their answer is often the same: a grizzly bear.
“Grizzly bears are reoccupying large areas of their former range,” says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they haven’t been seen in a century or more, they’re increasingly being sighted by humans.
The western half of the U.S. was full of grizzlies when Europeans came, with a rough number of 50,000 or more living alongside Native Americans. By the early 1970s, after centuries of cruel and continuous hunting by settlers, 600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S. Their recovery has been so successful that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to delist grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed.
Obviously, if precautions(预防) aren’t taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away. “Our hope is to have a clean, attractant-free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits,” says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.
32.How do Americans look at grizzlies?
A.They cause mixed feelings in people. B.They should be kept in national parks.
C.They are of high scientific value. D.They are a symbol of American culture.
33.What has helped the increase of the grizzly population?
A.The European settlers’ behavior. B.The expansion of bears’ range.
C.The protection by law since 1975. D.The support of Native Americans.
34.What has stopped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from delisting grizzlies?
A.The opposition of conservation groups. B.The successful comeback of grizzlies.
C.The voice of the biologists. D.The local farmers’ advocates.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Food should be provided for grizzlies. B.People can live in harmony with grizzlies.
C.A special path should be built for grizzlies. D.Technology can be introduced to protect grizzlies.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I took a fare at 2:30 a.m. When I arrived, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to assist the woman. She held my arm and we walked slowly toward my car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good man,” she said. When we got in the car, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
I looked in the rear-view mirror(后视镜). Her eyes were shining. “I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t live very long.” I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.
For the next two hours,we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first ray of the sun appeared, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.” We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a small hospice(临终关怀医院),with a driveway that passed under an entrance hall. Two nurses came out to the car as soon as we pulled up.

Learning A New Skill
When I was in my primary school, I had an opportunity to attend a musical contest held in my school. That was the first time I had watched a live musical performance. The fantastic players touched me deeply.
I asked my parents to allow me to take up a piano lesson for beginners. In the beginning, it was quite difficult to read the notes on the stave. However, it did not demoralize me. I spent most of my leisure hours practicing playing the piano. Although my fingers were painful after a few hours of practice, I felt satisfied when thinking that I could play a music piece completely soon.
Even though I will not pursue music as my life career, I will still continue learning and playing the piano as my hobby. It is simply because music is the best medication for my soul.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was slowly seated in a wheelchair with the help of the nurses. “How much do I owe you?” she asked eagerly, reaching into her purse. “Nothing,” I said. “But you have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I responded. The old woman offered her heartfelt gratitude once again.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly, tears filling her eyes. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.” After a slight pause, she added, “Thank you for your kindness.” I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Saying goodbye to the poor lady, I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life.
