1.(22-23高一下·浙江宁波·期末)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was in the chilly midwinter, and the wandering couple walked through the freezing night with heavy steps, seeking shelter. The father-to-be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn where his tired companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. She labored along, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind. When her time came, it must not be out here along the roadway.
Their names were not Mary and Joseph, but Pepper and Cooper. Nor were they man and wife, but rather a pair of dogs, and the place was on a rural highway outside of town.
Night fell. Gus Kiebel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see, but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags. What were they doing out here on this road
He parked his truck and approached the animals. Gus bent down and stretched out his hands to the dogs, which made no effort to escape. Gus read their tags by his truck’s headlights. He pulled out his phone to call the number listed, but it was snowing so hard that his screen blurred (模糊不清的). He placed the dogs in his truck, on the floor of the passenger side. By the time he came around the driver’s side, he found that they had climbed onto the passenger seat and were snuggled (依偎) together there. Gus dried his phone, snapped a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife, Katie Kiebel.
Then he dialed the number from the dog’s tags. A man answered and immediately sounds defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.
“I gave those dogs away,” the man said. “They’re not mine anymore.”
“Well, do you want them back ”
“No. I can’t take care of them.”
The man hung up.

【答案】Not knowing what to do, Gus looked over at them. Gus then tried calling the county dog warden’s office .Being after hours, the best he could do was leave a message, but what to do next Gus had always wanted beagles as pets, but he and his wife already had a dog and couldn’t take on two more. With nothing left to do, he called Katie.
“You cannot put them back in the snow,” Katie said. Katie told Gus to bring them home, which is probably what he was hoping to hear anyway but just wanted confirmation. Once there, the good -hearted couple prepared a bed for the Cooper and Pepper on their warm, enclosed porch. They also set out food and water for them to replenish their energy. The exhausted dogs snuggled together, Cooper lifting his weary head from time to time to fuss over Pepper. The two would spend the night there, safe and warm, until morning came.

3.(22-23高一下·福建宁德·期末)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Sometimes when you are a kid, it is easy to feel pretty helpless. Indeed, if you stop and think about it, there are so many things that you can’t do. You can’t play sports as well as your football or basketball heroes. You can’t do some of the stunts (特技动作) that other kids do at the skate park. Sometimes it is hard to see that you even have the potential to develop any of these abilities. What you want to achieve may seem such a long way in the future that it feels you will never reach it.
Well, I once beard an inspiring story—a true story, I believe—about a boy named Trevor. It shows there are little things kids can do that make a big difference. One night Trevor was doing what a lot of other 13-year-old
kids would be doing: He was watching TV. On the news he saw a story about some homeless people sleeping out in the cold on the streets, in a downtown area of Philadelphia where he lived. Trevor had never really stopped to think how fortunate he was to live in a fairly well-to-do suburb(郊区) of the same city. The story of the homeless people touched his heart and he began to wonder what he could do to help these people.
It might have been easy for Trevor to forget about it. There are so many sad stories that you see on TV at times. This could have been just another that he ignored.
Trevor also might have thought, “Well, what can I do about it I’m just a kid’‘, but he didn’t. Instead he began to wonder how he might help and that led him to remember there were some spare, unused blankets in their garage.

Paragraph 2:
To collect more blankets, the next day Trevor went to some public places where there were notice boards.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】So he went to his father and asked whether he could take the blankets to the homeless downtown for the night. His father was surprised but also proud of his son’s empathy and willingness to help others. He agreed to
drive Trevor to the downtown area and together they handed out the blankets to the homeless people they came across. The smile on the faces of the homeless people and the gratitude in their eyes made Trevor feel that he had done something truly meaningful. From that night on, Trevor made it his mission to help the homeless people in his city.
To collect more blankets, the next day Trevor went to some public places where there were notice boards. He put up some posters appealing to people to donate any spare blankets they had. He also went to his school and asked his classmates to help him in this mission. Slowly but surely, Trevor was able to collect a lot of blankets. He and his father started to drive downtown more often to distribute the blankets to the people in need. They also started to bring food and other necessary things for the homeless people.

Mary led a fairly sheltered life and was quite shy. In every social occasion, her outgoing husband took the lead, striking up conversations with strangers. In October 2015, Mary and her husband retired and moved to the beautiful seaside city, Nanaimo, where Mary was looking forward to some quiet, creative activities. One day, they heard about an upcoming storytelling event near their neighborhood and decided to take part in it.
As the storytellers told stories on stage, the audience laughed, cried and sang. Like everyone else, Mary was also attracted by their performance. Somewhere in the middle of the storytelling, Mary suddenly had an exciting idea. She whispered to herself, “I love stories! I want to be a storyteller!”
Mary knew that storytelling requires getting up on a stage under bright lights and addressing strangers. Besides, storytelling requires self-confidence and memory. She thought, “I’m a shy person and public speaking is my greatest fear. I’m already sixty years old and my memory isn’t that great. What if I get up there and forget my story Where am I going to get the talent, memory, and courage needed to become a storyteller ” But she had never felt so alive before and she wanted to be a storyteller so much that she decided to challenge herself.
So when the storytellers finished their storytelling and said there would be storytelling training courses the next month, Mary registered and asked her husband to sign up as well. She needed his support, as she was too shy to stay with a roomful of strangers by herself.

When the course began, Mary found a young, smiling teacher came in. The teacher introduced herself and then asked everyone to introduce themselves, which made Mary more anxious. With the encouragement of her husband, she introduced herself anyway. Later, the teacher explained some storytelling skills, including how to use body language. During the second course, learners were asked to tell short stories in front of others using the skills. Mary found learners there friendly and humorous. Days later, she became good at storytelling and made many new friends.
After all the courses finished, Mary signed up to tell a story on stage. After selecting a story, she made an effort to memorize it and practise telling it. In addition, she often turned to her new friends when she had problems. They helped each other to improve their storytelling skills. Finally, Mary stood up on stage, performing excellently. After that, Mary's confidence continued to grow and her shyness just faded away. She also realised one was never too old to challenge oneself and learn new things.

In the building I’d just moved into, a note was posted, reading: Sign up to drive Mrs Black for her chemotherapy treatments twice a month. Since I wasn’t a driver, I couldn’t add my name. But my grandma’s words often came into my thoughts. ”Dear, it’s a blessing to do a good deed for someone else, but sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.“
I was a university student. In this December storm, it was a hard journey to go to school and get out of school on time. One day before the night of my final exam, the snow fell heavily. The next morning, I walked to the bus stop. For an hour, I stretched my neck, hoping that a bus would come. Then I gave up. I hoped I could find some help from my neighbours as the cold wind pushed me toward my apartment. Opening the door, I found myself face to face with a woman at the mailbox. She had a set of keys in her hand. Obviously she had a car and she was just going out. At that moment, despair overcame pride. I asked her whether she could possibly give me a lift.
An odd look crossed the woman’s face, and I added, “Oh, I live here. I moved in recently, and I can’t drive. I am in an urgent need to go to school for my final exam.” Then, she agreed without delay, “Sure!”
On our way to my school, she spoke so warmly that I stopped feeling uncomfortable. “You remind me of my grandmother,” I said. A slight smile crossed her lips. “Just call me Grandma Alice as grandchildren do.”

When I got off, I thanked her again and again, waving as she drove away. Grandma Alice’s help had made me loosen up, which was also like a ray of light in a dark world. Later after class I asked if any of my classmates was going the same way as me. It turned out that three fellow students were all very willing to offer me a lift without hesitation. Sitting in the car back home with one of them, I appreciated the amazing white world better than ever. Arriving at my apartment, I thanked my classmate for driving me home.
Waving to my classmate, I walked home and heard a neighbour saying to Grandma Alice, “Good night, Mrs Black.” It dawned on me that Grandma Alice was Mrs Black. I had asked a person struggling with cancer to give me a lift in a snowstorm! Immediately, I sincerely apologized to her. To my surprise, she replied with a soft smile, ”Helping you made me feel needed after being looked after by others for so long owing to my cancer." Convinced that both giving help and getting help could reflect the warmth of the world, I experienced a warm current rising in my heart despite the bitter cold outside.

I live in San Francisco, where it pretty much never snows. But if you get in a car and drive too far, you’ll
arrive at these beautiful, snow-covered mountains. Last week, my friend Ollie and his grandmother Abuela, decided to go skiing in the mountains.
They invited me to go with them. I was so excited that I jumped up and down. However, it was colder than I’d expected. Trembling in the cold air, I was afraid to be frozen to death there. Luckily, Abuela, who is probably the kindest human on the planet, offered to let me wear her scarf. It was the softest, warmest, most awesome scarf and more importantly, Abuela had knit(编织) it herself. So moved was I that I couldn’t say anything to express my thanks. With the scarf warming me up, I enjoyed skiing in high spirits together with them.
“These old knees need a rest!” Abuela said after a couple of hours of skiing, pointing at her knees. “You two go ahead and take another run. I’ll be in the lodge, reading by the fire.”
So Ollie and I took one more ride on the ski lift up the mountain. As we looked around at the trees and watched people zipping down the slopes, I felt that one piece of yarn(纱线) on Abuela’s scarf kept ticklin(使······发痒) my neck. I said to Ollie, “It’s uncomfortable. Maybe something is wrong with the scarf.”
“Oh yeah, I see it,” Ollie said.
I pulled on the end of the yarn, thinking it was just a loose piece that had separated from the scarf. But the more I pulled, the longer the piece became.
“Jeff” Ollie said. “You’d better stop. The scarf is unravelling(散开)!”

【答案】 When I took off the scarf to see what he meant, I was frightened. Oh no! I just turned Abuela’s special scarf into half a special scarf and half a big pile of yarn! It was a one-of-a-kind thing that I would never be able to replace! What could I do I was burning with anxiety. “Um, you could say a bird suddenly flew down out of nowhere and pulled the scarf right off your neck!” Ollie suggested. How ridiculous! I gave him a dirty look. Ollie then smiled and continued, “You could throw it from this ski lift, and say you accidentally dropped it.”
His silly ideas weren't making me feel better and I decided to tell Abuela the bad news. After all, I believed that honesty was more important to Abuela than the scarf itself. Overwhelmed by the feelings of guilt, I started to walk towards Abuela the moment I arrived at the lodge. As you can probably imagine, it seemed the world’s furthest distance to me. But when I finally told Abuela the truth, she was really nice and understanding. She appreciated my honesty and comforted me, telling me that she could knit many more scarves with a great big basket of yarn at home. Breathing a sigh of relief, I hugged her and thanked her from the bottom of my heart. It’s an unforgettable and splendid skiing trip, one where I enjoyed both the pleasure of skiing and warmth from Abuela.

My struggles started in seventh grade when I began passing out. I had many medical check-ups and finally found one that helped. My average blood pressure was about 80/60 on a good day. To this day, I continue to battle this problem.
Then, two years ago, I was diagnosed (诊断) with fibromyalgia, a muscle disease that is not really helped by medication. It’s like having a pulled muscle when the disease attacks. It can last as long as three months. I was bedridden for a month. Cold weather, rain, or physical or emotional stress can cause the pain,
It’s hard enough to be a healthy teenager and go through the typical changes with friends, family, school, etc. Add to that missing two to three months of school a year, and it can make things very difficult. The hardest part was on the outside I looked normal like everyone else; however, on the inside, I was in horrible pain. Some classmates had passed their comments on me thinking that since my physical appearance was fine, I must be OK. The judgment hurt me more than anyone will ever know.
I battled with depression (抑郁) as well, because I felt like an outsider. I longed to be normal and healthy. I even developed an eating disorder. In the beginning, I had lost a lot of weight. For the first time, I felt like I was attractive because I was skinny. I was receiving more attention than ever. I would still feel depressed, though, because of all that was going on in my life. I would eat a lot hoping the stress would go away. But then I would throw up the food so I would still look good. Luckily, I overcame these problems with the help of my family and a wonderful job.

I entered my freshman year of high school with a philosophy: work hard and do whatever 1 could succeed at. I thought I would make some impressive achievements in this way. I wouldn’t waste my time on areas I was not good at.
And this philosophy served me well. I worked hard on my lessons and piano practice, which I had talent for, and got the results I wanted. usually in the shape of good grades and rewards. My friends laughed about my all-or-nothing attitude, but I thought it was the only sure path to success.
At the beginning of the second year of high school. I fully intended to keep the same attitude. Then I joined the school cross-country running team. a year after I had watched cross-country races. I joined mainly because my brother was on the team; he was entering his senior year, and I wanted to spend more time with him before he left for college. Also, many of my friends were on the team. and they had been trying to persuade me to join them for months.
When I came to the first practice. I was filled with optimism and dreamed of being an excellent runner. But as the distance we ran each practice gradually increased. I realized however hard I tried. I was the slowest on the team. And the muscle injury was often intolerable. What was the point of putting me through so much pain I’d never be an excellent runner. For the first few weeks. I had been thinking of giving up.
Then we had our first cross-country meet. When we got off the bus at Lamoille High School. dressed in our blue uniforms with our team name shown on the shirts. the sight of the other teams warming up made me anxious. I thought I would let my team down. And I guessed my coach and teammates would be disappointed at my performance and blame me. This thought made me decide to quit the cross-country running team after the race.
Now. looking at the tough course made up of a series of short. steep(陡峭的)hills. I stood silently with my teammates.

【答案】One possible version:
Together, we jogged to the starting line. We had a quick warm-up before the race. When the race started, I felt enormous pressure on my shoulders. I was increasingly frustrated as I watched more and more runners rush past me. I tried my best, but I still the slowest on the team. I even couldn’t find any runners around me. I thought they may be running to the final line now. It was a tiring course. Finally, I stopped running and struggled to walk up the last challenging hill. Just then, I heard people calling my name from the top of the hill.
Surprisingly, my coach and teammates were smiling and cheering for me. I was confused and embarrassed because my performance was terrible. Anyway, I stopped caring about my performance and ran to the final point with all my might. As I was jogging up the last section of the hill, my coach and teammates all applauded me for my efforts. Not until then did I realize my coach and teammates didn’t care how fast I ran . I learned I shouldn’t attach too much importance to the result. In fact, the process is more important. After that meet, I continued cross-country and focused on enjoying the journey.

Many years ago, at Christmas time, I parked my car in the town centre on my way to the post office to post my Christmas cards. It was the last posting day for Christmas cards if they were to be received before Christmas.
As I came out of the car park, I saw a young boy probably about 12 years of age on the other side of the road. He was alone and as he was walking, he was crying and holding his right hand side. I thought some bigger boys had perhaps bullied him and he was in pain. I had to go to his aid and see if I could help him.
He told me that his big sister who was a nurse had bought him a combined birthday/Christmas present. It was an Alpha Egg Dictionary. He had been allowed to use it and only had it days when he dropped it and broke the
screen!
The little guy was upset, tears rolling down his face as he told all this to me. My heart ached for him. It was clear he valued his present and knew that this was a lot of money for his sister to spend on him. He’d been to an electronic dictionary repair shop and they’d told him it would be 80 to get a new screen.
I had to help. But it was very close to Christmas and I had no cash with me. I once made contact with guys in an e-dictionary repair shop so I took him there, I knew the guys would have helped me out and my intention was to get the screen on the dictionary fixed and I would pay for it the following week. I knew they would trust me on this. I brought him with me. However, the shop was closed! I had one of the guys mobile numbers but I couldn’t get in contact with him. What next What could I do now

【答案】范文
I brought him to an ATM machine (自动取款机). The moment the boy saw the cash machine, he thought curiously and his face showed surprise. I told him softly, “You wait here for me!” I slowly reached into my pocket, pulled out my bank card, and took out all the money in my account. I gave him my only 20 and made
some excuses as to why I could just give him so little.
The next day, I received a call from the boy’s father. He thanked me profusely for helping his son in such a difficult time. He expressed his gratitude and said he was deeply touched by my kindness. He explained that their family was going through a tough financial situation, and my act of generosity had made a significant difference in their lives. Looking back, that encounter with the boy at the ATM was not just a random act of kindness; it was a life-changing experience for both the boy and me. It taught me the value of empathy and the impact a single act of kindness can have on someone's life.

People often have a tough time dealing with their feelings of disappointment. That is when you should give them time and understanding and he or she just might come around before long.
I remember talking with my friend Avery about the coming school play Alices Adventure in Wonderland, which we both applied for. Avery had a talent for acting and she was anxious for playing Alice while for me I didn’t care what part I played as long as I would be in. However, when character list was posted, we were surprised to find that I got the part of Alice and Avery was chosen to act the rabbit. I guessed it was because I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition (试演). But that situation really didn’t occur to me.
Then I asked Avery, “Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines ” “You mean, practice your lines ” Avery replied, not even looking at me. “No, thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.” I continued to ask if it would be OK for next week but her answer was negative and full of anger.
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me on getting the lead role, they asked how I felt. “Well, I can’t understand.” I said and told them about Avery’s reaction and I believed that she pretty much threw away our friendship.
“Hmm,” said my dad. “Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend ” “Dad’s right,” added my mom. “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious (羡慕的) and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. She’ll come around.”
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. I practised my lines but I knew I needed some help since my voice was not expressive enough. Day by day, Avery’s attitude seemed softened. As the rehearsal (彩排) day was near, I made a decision.

I was so grateful for her help and I could tell that she was happy to be able to help me.
Then came the big day. We both performed our parts perfectly and the audience was thrilled. After the show, Avery and I hugged each other and thanked each other for our help. I was so glad that I had given her time and understanding, and that she had come around. From then on, we were even better friends than before.

An injured bald eagle (秃鹰) that can’t fly is living out the rest of his days at a bird national park in Missouri.
Last month, one of his caretakers noticed something strange. Keeper Kerstin saw Murphy the eagle protecting a large low-lying land in the ground. The spot was carefully decorated with leaves and branches, and featured a smooth, round stone right in the center.
Later that day, Keeper Kerstin saw Murphy sitting on the stone as if it were an egg, and he continued to do so day after day. Male bald eagles take an equal part in raising young, so this is very natural behavior for a male.
“Every so often he rearranges the sticks in his nest, and cackles (咯咯叫) at any other eagle that come too close. We wish Murphy all the luck in the world, but we’re not telling him the reality of the situation,” the nonprofit wrote on Facebook. “We have vet to see a stone hatch (破壳)!”
Many viewers have guessed that Murphy is lonely and needs a mate, but the keepers insist he is choosing to do this on his own.
“Murphy is not lonely! He is housed with 4 other bald eagles — 2 males and 2 females,” a keeper said.
“He is not welcoming help with his nest, nor is he seeking it! He has not chosen a mate, so he very clearly wants to do this on his own. He does not want anything (real eggs) but his stone. Eventually he will get bored and give it up, but we love watching him care for it now. No need to feel bad for him! He is perfectly satisfied!”
Last week, an eagle nest containing two chicks (雏鸟) near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri was blown down by very high winds. One chick died in the fall, but the other was found and saved by a faithful nest watcher, who brought the chick to the center’s wildlife hospital.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】To save the chick, the staff decided to give Murphy a chance of raising a real baby. However, Murphy had never raised a chick before. It was definitely a risk, but also the chick’s best chance at survival. The keeper took away Murphy’s rock egg and put the chick in his nest. It took Murphy about an hour to approach the baby eagle to examine him. Murphy was definitely curious. But he didn’t feed him. The next day, the eagle left the nest to go closer to Murphy — and this was when the magic happened.
The wonder happened and Murphy fed the baby! The baby eagle hadn’t eaten any food for several days. He must be very hungry. He regarded Murphy as his mom. He turned to his mother for food. Murphy was filled with so much motherly love that he treated the baby eagle like his own child and fed him from time to time. With Murphy’s great care, the baby eagle was growing fast and healthily. At the same time, Murphy happily experienced the dream of raising a real child.

Jack made his own kites. He carefully cut the paper to size and stuck it to thin, but strong branches. He then added a flying string (线) and a tail. As he pulled the string, the kite flew into the sky. It rose above all other kites. Other kite flyers called him “Kite King”.
One morning, Jack went out to fly his yellow-green kite. He threw the kite upward and pulled the string. The kite wobbled (摆动) a bit; he quickly pulled the string and let it go. The kite steadied (保持平稳) itself and then rose a few feet. Jack continued to pull the string and the kite went higher.
With no other kites in sight, Jack lost interest. He decided to go home. Just then, a competitor arrived. It looked like another kite, or so he thought. He was surprised it had no string. No, the competitor was not a kite. It was a big butterfly (蝴蝶).
The butterfly had spread its wings. It seemed to like Jack’s kite. It flew closer and then started to rise. Jack pulled and then let go of the string quickly. His kite caught up with the butterfly. The butterfly rose further up, leaving the kite behind. Jack was quick to pull the string, sending his kite flying above the butterfly.
By then other kids had arrived. No one flew their kites. They all stood watching the flyers in the sky-the
bright yellow-green kite and the bright orange butterfly. There was complete silence. One moment the kite was up and above the butterfly, and the next, the butterfly flew higher. It was a neck-and-neck race.
Suddenly the butterfly started losing height. It was unbelievable but true. The butterfly was left far behind as the kite raced ahead. Jack gave a shout of success. In the next moment, he frowned. The butterfly was losing height rapidly. At that speed it would hit the ground fast.

【答案】 Jack started lowering the kite fast. At first, the kite was on a level with the butterfly. Kids held their breath. Jack, sweaty and worried, picked up speed to make the kite lower. After a few seconds, the kite came down below the butterfly and the butterfly landed on the kite. Gently, very gently, Jack brought the kite to the ground in the hope that the butterfly would be safe on the kite.
Jack got down on his knees and looked at the butterfly sitting on the kite. He thought the butterfly was looking at him too. Jack waited patiently, hoping that the butterfly would regain strength. A few minutes passed, the butterfly spread its wings little by little and flew up again. All the kids were very happy to see this. The butterfly flew in a wide circle and headed back to where Jack was standing. It flew around Jack, then gained height and
flew away as Jack waved goodbye.
