Imagine a world with no more wild animals: no elephants, no tigers or lions. To some people, it’s too terrible to imagine a world like this. 17 Amy is one of them.
Staying with wild animals—feeding them—and taking care of them is all Amy has wanted to do in her life. 18
Amy is the human “mother” to the 500 animals that live on her family wildlife farm in San Antonio, Texas. On the farm, she takes care of animals from all over the world. Amy says she loves them all. 19 Their population in the wild has decreased by 80% in the last 15 years. “I’m so glad to get help from five wildlife experts that took giraffes up to a higher level. All our hard work helps protect giraffes living in the wild.”
Besides her animal caring, Amy also holds monthly classes where she teaches school children about the animals.
20 Visitors not only learn about the animals, they can also get close to them. And the animals are not against that. For them, people are part of their natural environment.
21 As the animals walk freely and safely around the grounds, it is easy to forget that San Antonio, a busy city, is just a few minutes away.
A.And that is exactly what she does!
B.So they are doing something about it.
C.The farm works as a nature reserve, an educational center and an animal park.
D.Amy also opens the farm to the public.
E.However, two giraffes take up a special place in her heart.
A group of scientists discovered a gas called phosphine on Venus (金星). That means there may be living things on the planet. This made many people start to imagine the talk between aliens and humans. Imagining himself as the life on Venus, a reporter from No. 1 Middle School wrote the following letter to people of Earth on the school newspaper.
Attention, People of Earth!Fine. The big secret is out. Many of your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away—here, on the beautiful planet of Venus. Congratulations! However, we are asking you: Please stay away. We’re serious. We are not interested. No spacecraft to Venus, no exploring tasks, no visits. If we wake up one morning and find so many of you people walking around in spacesuits, we’re going to be really sad.We don’t want to be impolite. It’s just that we’re quite surprised and unpleasant by what you’ve been going on down there. Earth is in a mess. There are too many cars running on the roads, which creates lots of traffic jams. Many people suffer from serious illnesses. Some people do great damage to the forests and rivers. What’s worse, there are even fights between countries, etc. No wonder so many of you want to leave Earth for another planet.Leave us alone. Keep right where you are. We know you’d like it here. That’s what frightens us. You’d all move to our planet at once. If we start having you all up here, pretty soon, the other aliens like Martians and Jupiterians are going to come, too. But we can’t imagine what terrible things will happen to us! Venus is not Earth. It’s not your home. We suggest Earth people ▲ . An 11-year-old Aron is a French boy. His home is near the Seine. He is proud of that because it is one of the most beautiful rivers. The river goes through France. However, the Seine has been seriously polluted. Aron wants to clean the river for people to swim in the Seine by 2024. The city will host the Olympic Games in that year, too.
Cleaning the river is a big job. Aron fishes metal (金属) rubbish out of the river with his dad. He has done it nearly every weekend for the past two years. They can catch a ton (吨) of metal rubbish in one day.
Aron learned about cleaning rivers from the video made by IUCN (世界自然保护联盟). People were fishing metal rubbish out of rivers and they used ropes (绳子) tied to magnets (磁铁). Aron asked his parents for some ropes, a hook, and a powerful magnet. The magnet was very strong. It could get metal rubbish weighing more than a ton.
When he began, fishing for metal rubbish was just a lazy weekend activity. But Aron found out there was too much rubbish at the bottom of the river. He wanted to do more, so it became like a full-time job.
Last October, Aron won an award for his efforts. He received the Medal of Paris. He is proud of his progress in the last two years. A part of the Seine is clearer than the rest of the river. That is where he first started fishing for metal.

Dear Dongdong,
I have been in Hong Kong for a whole week and I will stay here for another week. Hong Kong is really a great place to visit. There is so much to see and do here. And I have done so many wonderful things.
I’ve taken the cable car (缆车) to The Peak Galleria (山顶广场). I’ve been to Hong Kong Racing Museum. I’ve learned a lot about horse racing there. I’ve also visited Ladies’ Street. With the development of society, our living conditions have improved, and our world has changed great. But as for the environment, some problems appear together with the social development.
Human activities cause many problems to our planet. For example, sea level (平面) has risen 15 cm over the past century. The Amazon rainforest (热带雨林) has reduced (减少) by 17% in the last 50 years because the farmers cut down the trees for farming. People killed a lot of animals, causing the number of animals heavily to reduce.
The earth’s temperature has risen, and it turns more ice into water, so the oceans and land have changed, too. Animals can’t keep up with the changes, so some animals and plants died completely.
Unless we change our habits, our future in a hundred years’ time couldn’t be hopeful. To solve the problem, we should choose green ways to go to work or school as much as possible. Next, we should reduce water and food waste. What’s more, we should build parks to protect some of the land. Trees and plants grow in the parks, and animals live there, too. There are less trees cut, more planted. Our living environment will be better and better.

Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt (被状物) over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn’t let dirty smoke go into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin (垃圾箱) and do not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.

Do you ever throw away food at home Do you know what happens to the food if shops and supermarkets don’t sell it You might be surprised to find out that over one third of food gets lost or wasted. What’s more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to live a healthy life.
Many people in the UK and across the world are trying to make use of thrown-out food that is perfectly edible(可食用的). For example, there is a restaurant in London using unsold(未出售的) food from supermarkets, including a lot of vegetables, fruit, fish and so on. Cooks turn it into delicious soups and dishes to feed the hungry people. Customers pay what they can afford, or help with the washing up.
Also, last year the UK’s first food waste supermarket opened. Customers pay whatever they want for the food. You can usually find things such as fresh vegetables, fruit and milk there.
“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Food from supermarkets such as dairy, vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry school children. Their families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch or snacks.

Feeling hot So is Earth. Because of problems like climate change and bad ways of farming, much of the planet’s land is drying up. What can we do to solve this problem
One thing the United Nations did was to create a holiday. In 1994, the UN started World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (世界防治荒漠化和干旱日), to let more people know about desertification. It is on June 17 every year.
Desertification happens when healthy land — land full of water and nutrients (营养)— becomes desert, which is dry and unhealthy. Every year, 20,000 to 50,000 square kilometers of Earth’s land is lost to desertification. In Africa, scientists expect that two thirds of Africa’s healthy land will be lost by 2025.
Desertification sometimes happens because of climate change, as big, fast changes in temperature can kill plants and trees.
However, it also happens because people use land too much, and in bad ways, to grow food on their farms. Growing too many plants in the same soil, in too short a time, can take away the soil’s nutrients faster than the soil can make new ones. That can turn the soil into dry sand, like a desert.
The UN suggests some different actions to stop desertification. One is to teach people better ways of farming, including the use of better fertilizers (肥料). Another is reforestation which means planting more trees. One country that has done a lot of that is China. Today China has 61 million hectares of reforested land — more than anywhere else in the world.
75.What is land like if desertification happens
A.It is full of water. B.It has more nutrients.
C.It is dry and unhealthy. D.It is suitable to live on.
76.What do scientists predict about Africa in 2025

B.Most of Africa’s healthy land will get dry and unhealthy.
C.Africa will have about 50,000 square kilometers of healthy land.
D.Africa will have about 20,000 square kilometers of desertification.
77.Why isn’t it good to grow too many plants in the same soil
A.Because it can change the climate faster.
B.Because it can change plants into bad soil.
C.Because it can change healthy land into forests.
D.Because it can take away the soil’s nutrients faster.
78.Which of the following does not cause desertification
A.Reforestation. B.Using land too much.
C.Using poor fertilizers. D.Climate change.
79.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph
A.The causes of desertification. B.The importance of reforestation.
C.The UN’s plans for improving farming. D.The UN’s suggestions for fighting desertification.
Wang Xin, a Chinese student, and her good friend Mary, an American student studying Chinese in China. were in a supermarket. They saw a young man walking down the stairs. In his hurry, he missed the last two steps and fell onto the ground. He tried to stand up while people around him laughed. Luckily, he seemed to be OK.

This is an example. The Chinese and the westerners will think and act differently when seeing such a thing. In that case, a westerner will rush over and help the person get up. If somebody falls, a Chinese person may try to make a joke if he or she is not hurt. People have seen the colorful shared bikes (共享单车) in the city streets around China for two years. People can rent (租用) them with a smartphone app and then park anywhere they choose. To relieve (减少) traffic jams and air pollution, many cities have introduced bike-sharing services. But sometimes, dreams are not so perfect.
It is true that it is convenient for people to go out by shared bike. As shared bikes become more popular, problems showed up. According to news reports, users treated shared bikes badly. After people used the bikes, some of them just threw them onto streets and even into the ditches (水沟). Some people stole the bikes or locked them up in chains (链条). A month ago, the police fined(罚) a man in Shanghai 1,000 yuan, because he stole a shared bike.
Besides, the damage to the QR codes (二维码) on the bikes has brought huge losses to bike-sharing companies, like Mobike (摩拜单车). If the QR code is bad, people cannot use the bike anymore. It can take several hundred yuan for the company workers to find a lost bike and repair it. Mobike has 100 credit scores for each user. Once the score drops to below 80, bike rental (租金) will go up five yuan per 30 minutes.
However, punishment may not be the best way to stop shared bikes from being stolen or damaged. Bike-sharing services will work better only if people follow the rules and show respect for the bikes.

Could you imagine cars driving without human drivers Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. This August, more and more driverless taxis run on roads in many big cities in China.
Why do we develop self-driving cars Self-driving cars give us many benefits. They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams and better parking of cars. Many people cannot drive for various reasons, including age, disability, or lack of experience. Now, they can get around more easily. Driving becomes more convenient.
According to a research, each year, over 1.3 million people die in car accidents around the world, and many more get hurt. Self-driving cars can reduce (减少) road accidents by 90% and save a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is human mistakes. By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose attention like humans do. They can improve driving safety.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver can. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, it will be difficult for self-driving cars to see the lines on the road. It might lead to an accident. The computer system in the car can also get hacked (非法入侵) by someone, causing it to crash.
It’s clear that there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving cars a common and safe sight on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen.
