Dan meets Kevin in the village hall and he mistakes Kevin for ‘Nemesis’, a bully who often does something nasty(恶毒的)to kids. After chatting, they think they should do something.
Dan and Kevin go behind the curtain and sit on the floor against the wall. Dylan lies down next to them and closes his eyes. The boys turn their torches off. They don’t talk. They sit and wait.
It’s dark but Dan can see the time on his watch. 12: 30 comes and goes.
Then it’s 1 o’clock. Then there is a noise. The outside door is opening.
Dylan opens his eyes. Then he sits up. He looks towards the door and makes a little noise.
“Shh!” Dan tells Dylan. The outside door closes. Dan and Kevin see a light under the door to the hall. The door opens and someone turns on the lights in the hall.
Very slowly Kevin and Dan look out from behind the curtain. A person dressed all in black is standing in the middle of the hall. It is Chloe. She’s looking round. She starts moving chairs and looking for something. Then she walks across to the piano. She plays a little music on the piano and smiles.
Dan looks at Kevin. Kevin looks at Dan. “Chloe smiling ” their looks say.
The boys look around the curtain again. Chloe is looking around the room again. She looks towards the curtain. Dan and Kevin move their heads back quickly.
Then they hear Chloe say, “Ah! There it is.” And they hear her walk towards the curtain. She takes something off a chair near the curtain and then sees the two boys sitting on the floor.
“What are you doing here ” she asks.
“What are you doing here ” asks Dan.
Chloe shows him her mobile phone. “But what about you two ” she asks.
Kevin takes some chocolate out of his pocket and shows it to Chloe.
“We’re having a midnight picnic.” he says.
Dylan sees the chocolate and starts wagging his tail.

The Marionette, as soon as his hunger was appeased, started to grumble and cry that he wanted a new pair of feet.
But Mastro Geppetto, in order to punish him for his mischief (淘气), let him alone the whole morning. After dinner, he said to him: “Why should I make your feet over again To see you run away from home once more “
“I promise you,” answered the Marionette, sobbing, “that from now on I’ll be good…”
“Boys always promise that when they want something,” said Geppetto. “I promise to go to school every day, to study, and to succeed.”
“Boys always sing that song when they want their own will.”
“But I am not like other boys! I am better than all of them and I always tell the truth. I promise you, Father, that I’ll learn a trade, and I’ll be the comfort and staff of your old age.”
Geppetto, though trying to look very stern, felt his eyes fill with tears and his heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said no more, but taking his tools and two pieces of wood, he set to work diligently.
In less than an hour the feet were finished, two slender, nimble little feet, strong and quick, modeled as if by an artist’s hands.
“Close your eyes and sleep!” Geppetto then said to the Marionette.
Pinocchio closed his eyes and pretended (假装) to be asleep, while Geppetto stuck on the two feet with a bit of glue melted in an eggshell, doing his work so well that the joint could hardly be seen.
As soon as the Marionette felt his new feet, he gave one leap from the table and started to skip and jump around, as if he had lost his head from very joy.
“To show you how grateful I am to you, Father, I’ll go to school now. But to go to school I need a suit of clothes.”
Geppetto did not have a penny in his pocket, so he made his son a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap from a bit of dough.
Pinocchio ran to look at himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so happy that he said proudly: “Now I look like a gentleman.”
“Truly,” answered Geppetto. “But remember that fine clothes do not make the man unless they be neat and clean.”
“Very true,” answered Pinocchio, “but, in order to go to school, I still need something very important.”
“What is it ”
“An A-B-C book.”
Putting on his old coat, full of darns and patches (补丁), he ran out of the house without another word. After a while he returned. In his hands, he had the A-B-C book for his son, but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was in his shirt sleeves and the day was cold.
“Where’s your coat, Father ”
“I have sold it.”
“Why did you sell it ”
“It’s too warm.”
Pinocchio understood the answer in a twinkling, and, unable to restrain his tears, he jumped on his father’s neck and kissed him over and over.

(2024·江苏常州·二模)Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic (北极的) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal-gold. And because shipping and transportation (运输) companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles (肌肉) for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller’s house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables (马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge’s sons and daughters at long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judge’s feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled (爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller’s place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the cold North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardener’s helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble (赌博). He believed he could win but the result was the opposite.

To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust men he knew.
However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened (收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim (浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.

(2024·江苏连云港·一模)The she-wolf walked deeper into the cave. It was larger inside than at the opening. It was warm and dry. The opening was small enough for her to stop anything dangerous from coming inside. She lay down and rested. She had found what she was looking for.
One-Eye entered the cave, but the she-wolf growled at him, and he quickly backed out again. He was hungry, and he went off to hunt. He was away from the cave for many hours. When he returned, he heard noises inside. He did not know what they were. He tried to enter the cave, but the she-wolf growled at him again. She now had five wolf cubs. She was afraid that One-Eye would eat them. She knew that male wolves sometimes ate their cubs.
One-Eye was not that kind of wolf. He knew he had to find food for his mate and her cubs. He set off to hunt again. Before long, he saw a small animal. It was big enough to eat, but as he moved toward it, it rolled itself into a ball. It was a porcupine (豪猪), an animal with sharp spines. When it is attacked, it shoots these spines at its attacker. He was afraid of the porcupine, so he moved on and looked for other small animals to eat.
He came to the river bank. A large water bird was standing there. One-Eye leapt at it and caught it. He was hungry and began to eat the bird. He remembered the she-wolf and her cubs in the cave. She needed food. He picked up the dead bird and began to carry it back to the cave.
He returned to where he had seen the porcupine. Another animal was watching the porcupine. It was a lynx. The lynx was waiting for the right moment to attack the porcupine. One-Eye decided to watch and see what would happen.
The porcupine thought it was safe and began to unroll. As soon as it unrolled, the lynx sprang forward and tried to bite it. The porcupine quickly rolled itself up again and shot sharp spines into the lynx. The lynx leapt into the air in great pain and then ran off.
One-Eye saw that the porcupine was badly hurt. He waited. One-Eye could see a good place to bite it, but he waited until he was sure the porcupine was dead. Then he picked it up and carried it back to where he had left the dead bird. He quickly ate the bird and carried the dead porcupine back to the cave.

It just showed how wonderful the real thing was if even dreams about love could make you feel so good. Wasn’t that his man, Balthasar, coming down the street It was. It must be good news from Verona.
“Balthasar,” he said. “Have you got a letter from the Friar How’s my wife And my father Is he alright ” Romeo did a little jig, dancing round his servant. “How’s my Juliet I’m asking that because if she’s well then everything is wonderful.”
Balthasar said nothing. He stared at the ground, avoiding Romeo’s eyes. Romeo stopped his dancing. Balthasar was crying.
“She’s well. So nothing can be wrong,” said Balthasar. He turned his back on Romeo and blurted, “Her body’s sleeping in Capulet’s tomb (坟墓) and her soul’s among the angels.”
Romeo felt cold, even in that terrible heat. His expression doubted his servant’s statement. “I watched them putting her in the tomb their family vault,” said Balthasar, “and then came straight to you.” He saw the pain in Romeo’s face and wished he could think of some way of comforting him.
“It can’t be!” said Romeo at last. He turned away. “The stars are against us. But I won’t give into them!” He turned back to Balthasar. “Go and get me some paper and ink and hire us some horses.”
“I beg of you, sir,” said Balthasar, “be careful. You’re sad and I’m worried that something bad is going to happen.” “You’re wrong,” said Romeo. “Just do as I tell you. Haven’t you got a letter from the Friar ”
“No.”

“I was alone here for years,” he said. “One day, I found the skeleton (骷髅). I saw it was pointing to a tree. I dug around that tree and found the treasure. I was living in a cave, so I took it to the cave. This morning, when Long John and his men came looking for the treasure, I showed myself to one of them. Mowgli went down the hillside into the farmers’ lands by night, and looked at the villagers in their house. But he didn’t believe in men because Bagheera showed him a square box with a drop gate so well hidden in the jungle (丛林) that he nearly walked into it. Bagheera told him that it was a trap. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Just a common (普通的) block of firewood, one of those thick logs (圆木) that are put on the fire in winter to make cold rooms warm.
One fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter (木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red and shiny that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing (摩擦) his hands together happily, he said to himself, “This has come in time. I shall use it to make the leg of a table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say, “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!”
What a surprise!
He turned frightened eyes about the room to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look up and down the street—and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head. “There may be something wrong with my ears. Well, well—to work once more.”
He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.
Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide.
“Where did that voice come from when there is no one around This piece of wood has learned to cry like a child I can hardly believe it. Here it is—a piece of common firewood, the same as any other. Yet—might someone be hidden in it If so, the worse for him. I’ll fix him!”
With these words, he threw it to the floor, against the walls of the room, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes—nothing; ten minutes—nothing.
“Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a song to get courage, and worked on.

That was how the adventures began. It was the sort of house that you never seem to come to the end of, and it was full of unexpected places. The first few doors they tried led only into spare bedrooms, as everyone had expected that they would; but soon they came to a very long room full of pictures; and after that was a room all hung with green, with a piano in one comer, and then a kind of little upstairs hall and a door that led out on to a balcony. And shortly after that they looked into a room that was quite empty except for one big wardrobe the sort that has a big mirror in the door.
“Nothing there!” Everybody rushed out but Lucy stayed because she thought it would be interesting to try the door of the wardrobe, even though she felt almost sure that it would be locked.
To her surprise, it opened quite easily, and two mothballs dropped out.
Looking into the inside, she saw several coats hanging up—mostly long fur coats. There was nothing Lucy liked so much as the smell and feel of fur. She immediately stepped into the wardrobe and got in among the coats and rubbed her face against them, leaving the door open, of course, because she knew that it was very foolish to shut oneself into any wardrobe...She took a step further in—then two or three steps, always expecting to feel woodwork against the tips of her fingers. But she could not feel it.
“This must be a simply huge wardrobe!” thought Lucy, going still further in. Then she noticed that there was something crunching under her feet. “Is that more mothballs ” she thought, bending down to feel it with her hand. But instead of feeling the hard, smooth wood, she felt something soft and highly cold. “This is very strange,” she said, and went on a step or two further.
And then she saw that there was a light ahead of her; ...A moment later she found that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night—time with snow under her feet and snowflakes falling through the air.

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced(浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. "I thought you preferred the sea to being on land."
"I do," replied the Captain. "But these forests are under the sea." During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits(潜水服)that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it, and we were in the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colorful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colors of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred meters under the water. The suits worked very well, and it was easy to walk and breathe.
At one hundred meters deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The "trees" in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical(垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs(灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we walked further.
