For eight years, Mr. Baker’s business, Amazonex Lumber Co. sold rare tropical wood from the Amazon to customers in America. So, he could spend a lot of time in the rainforest. Mr. Baker told himself that selective harvest was managing the resource.
But on his birding outings, he began to notice that the forest had grown quieter and there were more and more cleared areas. Once, he saw an illegal type of wood labeled with the name of a type of wood legal to export. “It took me eight years to realize that selectively harvest and manage the forest made no sense.” he says.“I couldn’t do it anymore.”
Therefore, Mr. Baker founded an ecotourism company that takes tourists along Brazil’s Rio Negro. With the trips, he aims to foster appreciation and awareness of managing the rainforest among global citizens.
The Amazon rainforest covers more than 2.3 million square miles and is the biggest carbon store in the world, according to Giordane Martins, a biologist. Forty percent of Brazil’s land lies in the Amazon, but roughly twenty percent of it is already deforested. Mr. Baker regrets his contributing to this, but his tour company might compensate for it.
The rate of deforestation in Brazil is on the rise after falling for years, but Mr. Baker remains optimistic.“Our role is to educate,”Mark says.“Some tourists acquire nature sensibility on our tours. One of the goals of ecotourism is to share the economic benefits of travel. The other is to help promote conservation, to generate income and help protect the forest. We’ve seen that happen,”he says. “I wish we could say we saved the rainforest. We haven’t. But we have had an impact.”
24. What of the following is true about Amazonex Lumber Co.
A. It exported valuable tropical wood.
B. It helped make the rainforest clearer.
C. It sold extra tropical wood to America for eight years.
D. It labeled illegal wood with the name of legal wood.

To promote selective harvest.
To make profits from the trips.
To increase the number of rare birds.
To raise people’s love for the rainforest.
What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4
Decrease of carbon store.
Loss of wooded area.
Disappearance of Brazil’s land.
Expansion of Amazon rainforest.
What can we learn about the ecotourism from the last paragraph
It has saved the rainforest.
It provides academic education.
It inspires more people to the cause.
It has raised the rate of deforestation in Brazil.

When adult humans meet a baby, many can’t help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音的), sing-songy voice. This shift, known as parentese, is not unique to humans — it has also been observed in animals like monkeys and gorillas. Now, scientists are adding one more species to that list: bottlenose dolphins.
Dolphins are intelligent animals that live and hunt in groups. They communicate in a unique way: every individual produces its own signature sound that acts much like an ID card, usually by its first birthday. But how does each come up with its unique whistle For babies, it might have something to do with listening to Mum. To solve this mystery, researchers examined the sounds mother dolphins, make.
Scientists studied 34 years’ worth of recordings of sounds made by 19 female bottlenose dolphins. When the mother dolphins were near their young, they continued to make their signature sound, but at a higher frequency. They also used a wider range of frequencies than they did when their babies were not nearby.
This discovery suggests that using these modifications mother dolphins assist their young in learning how to produce these calls themselves. Since dolphin babies often spend some years with their mothers before living on their own, it makes sense that this adaptation would help them learn to communicate. At the very least, the higher-pitched whistle likely gets the babies’ attention. “It’s important for a baby to know,’ Oh, Mum’s talking to me now,’” says marine biologist June Mann.
This kind of research could help us understand how language developed in humans. “It is absolutely essential to have basic knowledge about other species and how they communicate,” says Mann. “I would be really interested to see whether dolphins also change their sounds when interacting with babies of others, which is what happens in humans.”
Which is the reason why researchers examined the sounds of mother dolphins
To explore why humans have unique sing-songy voice.
To find out what aspects of intelligence dolphins possess.
To work out how dolphins develop their distinctive sounds.
To check whether dolphins sound like monkeys and gorillas.
29. How did the researchers carry out their study of dolphins
A. By analyzing mother dolphins’ sound features.
B. By recording parent-child interaction frequency.
C. By measuring the distance between parent and child.
D. By examining the speech organs of mother dolphins.
30. Which of the following might Junn Mann agree with
A. The higher-pitched whistle distracts babies’ attention.
B. The use of parentese helps babies learn to talk.
C. Dolphin babies learn how to make these calls all by themselves.
D. Dolphins also change their sounds when interacting with human babies.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. The development of dolphin intelligence.
B. The value of studying dolphins’ language.
C. New findings about dolphin communication.
D. Similarities between the parentese of humans and dolphins.

For years, the aging process has troubled scientists. Everything from a healthy diet to keeping exercising has been experimented with to slow the aging process. Now new research offers a possible solution.
A team of Chinese scientists has identified a group of cells called CHITl in the spinal cord (脊髓), which is related to the process of aging. While the scientists are still in the early stages of understanding the practical applications of this discovery, they believe that taking a daily dose (一剂) of vitamin C might help slow down aging.
As an antioxidant (抗氧化物质), vitamin C is often considered to have significant anti-aging benefits. Antioxidants help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals(自由基),which are believed to be a cause of aging and heart disease.
Aging ·also has a significant impact on spinal cord-related problems, but we don’t fully understand how it works. To unlock the secret of time, the scientists conducted their study in an animal model and found that as the spinal cord ages, one important thing happens — the quantity of CHIT1 goes up in old spinal cords.
These cells then gather around motor neurons and make them age faster. However, researchers found that vitamin C can reduce the effects of CHITl and help keep motor neurons healthy.
The researchers also tested the effects of vitamin C on 10 older monkeys in three years. They divided them into two groups. One group got a daily dose of vitamin C, while the other group was the control group.
The researchers found that the monkeys who received vitamin C showed a “significant” improvement in the signs of aging in their motor neurons. This suggests that taking a daily dose of vitamin C might be beneficial for older individuals.
What can we learn about CHITl
It’s a cure for aging.
It is associated with aging.
It raises people’s awareness of health.
Scientists fully understand applications of it.
33. What is the function of vitamin C
It helps CHITl take effect.
It makes us uncover how aging works.
It heals the damaged skin.
It prevents motor neurons aging fast.
34. Why did the scientists conduct the study
They hoped to reveal the process of aging.
They hoped to prove the reliability of an animal model.
They wanted to test the quantity of CHITl in old spinal cords.
They wanted to confirm the influence of aging on cord-related problems.
Which of the following is the best title for the passage
CHIT1: A Solution to Anti-aging
Vitamin C: A Key to Aging More Slowly
Secret of Time: Stay away from Antioxidant
Aging: A Healthy Diet and Exercise Can Help
第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all do it: texting while walking or chatting on the phone while cooking dinner. In today’s society, doing just more than one thing at a time seems very common. But research shows that we had better stop multitasking. 36
It’s slowing you down. 37 In fact, it will probably take you longer to finish two projects when you’re jumping back and forth than it would to finish each one separately. The same is true even of driving: drivers take longer to reach their destinations when chatting on cell phones. In a word, switching between tasks leads to a loss in productivity.
38 The human brain can handle two complicated tasks without too much trouble. Add a third task, however, and it can cause you to introduce errors whatever you're working on, especially if one more of your activities involve much critical thinking.
It’s stressing you out. Researchers found employees who received a steady stream of office email stayed in a “high alert (戒备状态)” mode with higher heart rates. It's not only the physical act of multitasking that causes stress. 39 If you do poorly on an exam because you study while watching matches on TV, that can certainly bring a lot of stress.
It can be dangerous. Texting or talking on a cell phone while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk. 40 People who use mobile devices while walking are less likely to look before stepping into a crosswalk. And in one study, one in five teenagers who went to the emergency room after a car accident admitted they were using a smartphone at the time of the accident.
A. It can lead you to make mistakes.
B. It’s the consequences, as well.
C. Then how to avoid multitasking
D. Why should you stop multitasking now
E. Multitasking does harm to your critical thinking.
F. Not just using a phone while driving puts you at risk.
G. Contrary to popular belief, multitasking doesn’t save time.

Last summer, I went to Britain for further study, but stayed with a host family for a month. One day, I was complete surprised when the son of the family, Jeremy, told me that we would have toad-in-the-hole for dinner. I wasn’t sure whether we are going to eat a real toad in a hole, that would be terrible, if so. I joined them at dinner time with butterflies in their stomach. To my astonishment, a dish of sausages cooking in Yorkshire pudding (a mix that tasted a bit like pancakes) was served on the table, and it was tasted delicious. This turned out that toad-in-the-hole is a typical dish for a British dinner, and there’s no toad! What amazing experience! It was interested to try such yummy food with a strange name that I had never heard.

I have been a sports nut since I was old enough to hold a ball. That’s why when my PE teacher presented me with the idea of joining the swimming team, I decided to give it a shot and challenge myself a bit more.
So I started going to swimming practice last June. At first, I only regarded swimming as a hobby to enhance my physical fitness. But soon I found I fell in love with it. Then, last week, I had my first swimming competition, in the 100m breaststroke. Standing tall at the head of the lane made me feel both nervous and excited. After the sound of whistle, I dived in and began to swim with all my strength! Finally, I came in third place. I was so happy for my achievement, and it proved that hard work paid off.
I will keep on swimming, perhaps for the rest of my life, not only because it makes me healthier and stronger, but also for the confidence and the sense of achievement it has brought.
