Marco Polo’s tales inspired European explorers to search for sea routes from west to east. However, businessmen and explorers from the East set sail from east to west many years before Columbus first did.
In ancient times, silk from China found its way over land to India, the Middle East, and Rome, along what became known as the Silk Road. But another trading route across the sea was also formed along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, centered around Ceylon. Here, businessmen from China and many other places met to exchange goods.
Later, the Ming Dynasty further developed relations with these regions. Between 1405 and 1433, seven large fleets sailed west on voyages of trade and exploration. Under the command of Zheng He, they set sail from the South China Sea across the Indian Ocean to the mouth of the Red Sea, and then to the east coast of Africa. African royal families sent gifts such as giraffes as gestures of friendship in return for silk, and spices. Although China stopped further expeditions after 1433, these land and sea routes remained active for centuries.
To reach out across the sea remains a strong desire today. The ancient sea routes travelled by Zheng He are being revisited with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which is part of the Belt and Road Initiative. The aim of this initiative is to encourage cooperation and trade across the historic Silk Road areas, and strengthen the relations between China and the rest of the world. China has poured billions of money in systems and services along these routes, which will help to greatly develop the whole area for the benefit of future trade and cultural exchange.
China has also joined its friends across the sea on other important projects. In recent years, China has joined other nations on several expeditions to explore the Arctic. From a scientific point of view, there is an urgent need to study the Arctic in order to understand climate change and its effects.
32.What do we know about the ancient sea routes
A.The Silk Road existed longer than the sea routes.
B.It was Columbus who first explored the sea routes.
C.Businessmen travelled along the sea route for their king.
D.The sea route was extended along the Indian Ocean coasts.
33.What can be inferred about China’s expeditions in the Ming Dynasty
A.They were stopped for economic reasons.
B.They were considered to be a waste of money.
C.They also had an influence on the world trade.
D.Seven large fleets set sail from the East China Sea.
34.What’s the goal of China’s Belt and Road Initiative
A.To satisfy people’s strong desire and need.
B.To promote trade and develop friendships.
C.To understand the climate change and its effects.
D.To improve the system and service along the routes.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The Belt and Road Initiative. B.The history of Silk Road.
C.Brave businessmen and explorers. D.China’s exploration across the sea.

A majority of people have ever felt that they’re not good enough, even though they’ve done some cool stuff. This feeling can contribute to increased anxiety, depression and a cycle of overworking to prove yourself. 36 . Actually, lots of people, up to 82%, have these kinds of discouraging feelings. Here’s how you can deal with them.
● 37 . One way to fight self-doubt is to keep track of all the cool things you’ve done. Start a journal where you write down projects you’ve finished, goals you’ve reached, and nice things people have said about you. Work out a practical schedule to look back at this list.
● Figure out what’s good enough. Success can mean different things in different situations for different persons, so it’s okay not to be the best at everything all the time. Just think about how good is good enough. 38 and then it can save your energy for other important things, like spending time with your family and friends.
● Get help from someone you look up to. Working with a seasoned life coach who has done well and has qualities you admire can be a big help. They can assist you by sharing their own struggles with self-doubt and this exchange equips you with good methods in your own pursuit of success. 39
Just remember, it’s normal to be fooled by negative feelings sometimes, but you can’t be tricked by them all the time. 40 . By using these strategies, you can start a private path towards personal growth.

Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class speech at home!” Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...” Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Paragraph 1:
Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jessy, waiting for an explanation. A flush of embarrassment came to her cheeks, making Jessy biting her lip. Dead silence suddenly fell. Then came Miss Bella’s voice, “Why is Lee’s watch on your wrist ” Jessy hesitated for a while and decided to tell the truth. However, on second thoughts of the well-prepared speech and the magic of the watch, she changed her mind. “Miss Bella, could I give the speech first and then explain ” She made a request in a tone of begging.
Paragraph2:
Miss Bella smiled and asked the class to listen to Jessy’s speech first. Jessy put away her fright, took a deep breath, and made for the platform. Casting a glance at the sea of faces watching her, Jessy cleared her throat and began her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming...”Word began to flood out of her. “What a terrific speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Bella nodded with approval. Immediately Jessy finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Relieved, Jessy told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the watch. She returned the watch to Lee as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

W: Well, I also like to cook! It’s not hard to learn. I cook healthy foods, but you can cook anything. It’s a creative hobby. You can look up recipes and find new dishes to create. And you can cook with your wife and kids. It’s a fun thing for people to do together. Then you have something good to eat when you’re done!
M: That’s a great idea! I think I’ll start cooking with my family. We usually just go to restaurants. Thanks for the help!

Get ready to say goodbye to today’s warm, sunny weather. Just when millions of people are getting ready for the Christmas holiday, three storms are expected to make problems for holiday travelers. None of the storms will be strong, but the cold air will make traveling difficult. The first storm will arrive on this week end. It will bring rain to the northeast, but warm air it New York City might cause some fog and low clouds. It will be hard for drivers to see the road clearly. Later in the week, snow will come to the northwest states, with three inches falling in Saint Paul, Minnesota. And a few days later, just when the New Year’s celebrations are scheduled, Boston will be covered with free zing rain. The ice will cause problems for anyone trying to travel on foot, with one inch of ice expected on city roads. New Year’s will be cold in Chicago, too, with a strong wind blowing water from the river onto anyone hoping to celebrate by the water.
