We went deep into the earth through dark, narrow caves. When I got used to the light, I stood amazed.
A vast lake or even an ocean, spread far beyond where the eye could see. The shore was lined with shining sand, being softly lapped by waves. It was covered with small shells once inhabited by the first living beings. Around this sea stood a huge rock wall being worn away by the endless action of the waves.
I could see far over this great sea because it was being lit up by a strange light. Not sunlight, of course, as we were deep below the surface. Under the “sky”, if it could be called so, being made of rock, were also vast clouds. The light gave no heat, so the place felt rather gloomy (幽暗的). We were shut up inside a vast cave which must have been several miles high.
My imagination was powerless before such wonders. I felt like I was on some distant planet, and was both amazed and rather scared. However, I was energetic by the breezy salty air supplying more oxygen to my lungs. After many days in much narrower spaces, it was a great relief.
We began to walk following the shore. Soon in front of us appeared a tall, dense forest, composed of trees formed like umbrellas. “Mushrooms!” said my uncle. And he was right! There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each at least thirty feet high.
“Now look under your feet!” cried my uncle and I noticed many bones being crushed under our feet as we walked. Might some monsters still roam (漫步) through these gloomy forests I anxiously surveyed the landscape, but we were the only living creatures here. Thankfully!
Eventually we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I fell asleep with strange thoughts. — Journey to the centre of the earth

Humans work hard to avoid viruses. Sick people are isolated, diseased animals are killed and fields of infected crops are fired up. Reviving (复活) an ancient virus would surely be a disaster.
But a new study led by Fiddamanfrom Oxford, challenges this conventional wisdom. It shows how the revival of an ancient virus can unlock the secrets of its evolution.
The virus in the study is Marek’s disease virus(MDV), killing more than 90% of chickens. Yet when it was discovered in 1907, MDV rarely caused death.
Dr Fiddaman wondered whether its new-found virulence (毒性) was a result of large structural changes. To find out, he and his colleagues got their hands on nearly 1,000 chicken bones from ancient times across Europe and Asia, some of them up to 2000 years old. Sections of DNA from these remains were mapped onto the ones of today’s virus.
As the authors pieced together the sets of genes of ancient MDV, however, they noticed that the genes were arranged identically to those in modern species. It suggests that the increased virulence resulted not from large structural changes, but from point mutations (突变). In particular, changes had occurred in the arrangement of a gene called MEQ, which has an essential role in tumour (肿瘤) formation.
This discovery suggests that the ancient MDV may not have been able to cause tumours. To test this assumption, Dr Fiddaman followed up with a daring experiment. He made the ancient form of the MEQ gene and shoot it into living chicken cells. It did not turn on any of the genes associated with tumour formation. In comparison, a modern MEQ gene quickly showed its tendency to cause tumours.
By combining ancient and modern genetic biology, the methods pioneered in the paper reveal how, and more importantly why, any virus mutates. That could help scientists tackle other viruses that pull on the purse-strings of farmers—by designing new vaccines (疫苗), for instance—or even to work out how to prevent another global pandemic.
28.What does the underlined phrase “were mapped onto” mean in paragraph 4
A.were restricted to B.were opposed to C.were compared with D.were filled with
29.What caused the virulence change of MDV
A.Point mutations in MEQ. B.The occurrence of a new gene.
C.The reproduction of the ancient MDV. D.Large structural changes in modern species.
30.How did Dr Fiddaman test the assumption
A.By investigating a typical case. B.By conducting a field survey.
C.By studying the related theories . D.By doing a comparative experiment.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Viruses weaken gradually when they mutate.
B.The finding throws light on handling other viruses.
C.A global pandemic requires a world effort to end it.
D.Farmers will face more complex challenges than before.
D
In the summer of 2021, an unseasonal event took place. More than 100 miles of Florida’s coast around Tampa Bay became an oxygen-depleted (缺氧的) zone containing dead fish along the nearby shoreline.
Much of the conversation around our climate crisis highlights the emission of greenhouse gases and their effect on warming, sea-level rise and ocean acidification We hear little about the effect of climate change on oxygen levels, particularly in oceans and lakes. But water without adequate oxygen cannot support life. For the three billion people who depend on coastal fisheries for income, declining ocean oxygen levels are devastating.
As ocean and atmospheric scientists focus on climate, we believe that oceanic oxygen levels are the next big victim of global warming. To stop the situation from worsening, we need to expand our attention to include the dangerous state of oceanic oxygen levels — the life-support system of our planet. We need to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. Examples include nature-based solutions such as those discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow.
Enhanced monitoring of oxygen and the establishment of an oxygen-accounting system are a must. Putting oxygen into the climate story motivates us to do the work to understand the deep systemic changes happening in our complex atmospheric and oceanic systems. We celebrated the return of humpback whales in recent years to an increasingly clean New York Harbor and Hudson River. However, dead fish blocked the Hudson in the summer as warmer waters carried less oxygen.
Ecosystem changes connected to physical and chemical system-level data may point the way to new approaches to climate solutions. It includes an enhanced understanding of the life-support system of our planet. Roughly 40 percent of the world’s people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. If we do not save marine life from oxygen starvation, we starve ourselves.
32.What is the result of less ocean oxygen according to the text
A.A rise in the coastal fisheries. B.The warming of the atmosphere.
C.The emission of greenhouse gases. D.An increase in deaths of sea animals.
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A.Attention to oceans is necessary. B.Global warming effects are serious.
C.Oceanic oxygen levels are dangerous. D.Ways to boost oceanic oxygen are urgent.
34.Why does the author mention humpback whales in Paragraph 4
A.To bring in an oxygen-accounting system in climate.
B.To explain the urgency of oxygen levels in atmosphere.
C.To call for more attention to oxygen starvation in waters.
D.To show the achievements in reducing air pollution.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Save Marine Life. B.Make Oceans Safe.
C.Let Oceans Breathe. D.Keep Marine System.

How similar are language and music
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. 36 Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. 37 By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition (作品) of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
38
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion.
39 Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. 40 I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).
A.Both are expressive.
B.Similarly, music is part of many people's lives.
C.So just as you read English, you can read music.
D.We use language to express our thoughts.
E.In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.
F.How do you know that I am angry
G.Both vary with culture.

Short-form videos, which gained popularity on the Chinese platform Douyin, have given rise to a new trend in entertainment: ultra-short (超短) dramas. 56 (tailor) to our fast-paced lifestyles, ultra-short dramas are far more likely to attract people to try them out than traditional television series. In the past, committing 57 a show meant investing upwards of 40 minutes, but with ultra-short dramas, only a few minutes is enough for 58 taste.
Despite the initial success of ultra-short dramas, Chinese authorities 59 (tighten) regulations and intensifying monitoring on them. Currently, most of these ultra-short dramas revolve around clichéd (陈词滥调的) romantic plots, often 60 (feature) a wealthy individual getting together with a poor person. This narrative trend bears the potential 61 (shape) young minds’ perceptions of reality and their approaches to real-life challenges.
What’s equally concerning is 62 ultra-short dramas are designed to catch the viewers’ attention with bite-sized runtimes. In a world dominated by smartphones, 63 attention spans are already declining, frequent 64 (expose) to ultra-short videos can only worsen the issue.

Every October, my neighbor Ollie and I would enter the Halloween costume contest (服装比赛) in our neighborhood park. And each year the theme was different, such as “Superheroes” or “Far m Animals”.But this year’s theme was not so specific. It was just “Be Creative”.
Walking home along the road lined with tall trees, the two of us had a heated discussion about what “Be Creative” meant. We looked back on the themes we had really enjoyed. For “Superheroes”, we made costumes of Super-Force Flying Eagle. And for “Farm Animals”, we were dressed as a cow and a horse.Ollie even put a pair of wings for the horse, saying that he’d love to see a “flying horse” eating grass with a cow on the farm.
“Now that’s the creative spirit we need for this challenge!” I said.“Maybe, since we don’t know exactly what we want to be yet, we should start by choosing some cool costume-making materials.”
Just at that moment, a falling golden leaf happened to have landed on Ollie’s shoulder.“I’ve got it!” Ollie said joyfully, picking up some fallen leaves from the ground.“We can make costumes out of leaves and pretend to be trees.I can ensure, no one will be a tree as great as me.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” I said.“I like your creative idea and I have just got a perfect way to be another tree.”
We filled up two bags with different kinds of leaves: Ollie’s grandma, Abuela, an experienced tailor (裁缝), helped us with tons of excellent costume-making supplies and we started to work. When we were done, we each tried on the self-designed costumes and they were really wonderful. On the morning of the contest, we got up early and spent hours making preparations. We arrived at the park early and waited for our turn nervously and eagerly.
The big time came for us to go onto the stage.

W: Unbelievable! How can a dog paint like that
M: An animal activist named Steven rescued the homeless dog and taught her to paint.
W: Wow, I have to say I have never seen more talented ones.
M: Yeah, that’s why Steven named her after the famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso in 2015. In 2017, a businessman from London bought a painting for about $650.And Dogcasso’s fame spread quickly after that. She held an art show in America in 2019.It was the first show ever by a non-human artist.

M: Do you have any idea about the news A high school in America has introduced some cool desks for its students.
W: Oh What’s special about the desks
M: They have bike pedals attached to them! Students can pedal while doing their schoolwork.
W: What Is the school trying to make the classrooms more lively
M: Not exactly. In America, about 65% of teenagers are overweight. The school just wants to do its part to address the issue.
W: I see. But are the students comfortable with using these desks Won’t they feel tired
M: Well, the newspaper interviewed Alexia, the lady in charge of the school. She said that most students have actually mentioned that being physically active helps them stay focused during their lessons.
W: Okay. It sounds really cool.
M: Indeed. Currently, three classrooms have the new desks, but the plan is to gradually introduce them to all 24 classrooms in the school.

M: Hey, Jamie, I noticed you’re using ChatGPT, the AI computer program.
W: Yeah, actually, I’ve been using ChatGPT to help me with my paper writing lately. I mean, you can’t really trust the information it presents or expect it to give us unique opinions, but it’s helpful for organizing outlines.
M: Interesting. Did you know that ChatGPT is actually a fan of science fiction
W: What Are you saying it has its own reading preferences, just like I enjoy romance novels and you’re into historical fiction
M: Sort of. There was a study conducted at the University of California recently. Dr. Robert, who led the study, said his team treated ChatGPT like a high school student and quizzed it on various books. They discovered that a large portion of the top 100 books most likely in ChatGPT’s database were science fiction stories.
W: Unbelievable! Any specific examples
M: Well, the study mentioned one notable book called Interstellar.
W: Oh, I see. That’s my brother, Devin’s favorite book.
M: Okay. According to Dr. Robert, ChatGPT’s preferences have been shaped by the sources stored in it, which also influences what it offers.
Text 10
Hello, everyone. My name is Abby Miller. I’m here to tell you about the trip to London next week. First of all, about the weather. It will be a little cool in the morning and evening, so I suggest you take a sweater with you. During the day, the temperature will be high, so you’d better take your sun cream, your sunglasses and swimsuit. The good news is that there will be no rain, which is pretty unusual at this time of year in London. The hotel we are staying in will provide shampoo, hair conditioner and soap. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are not provided, though. Meals are served in the dining room on the first floor as follows: breakfast is served from 6: 30 a. m. to 10:00a. m.; lunch is available between 12:00p. m. and 2: 00p. m.; and dinner is from 6: 30p. m. to 8:30p. m. You will enjoy a healthy diet in London, and of course the famous fish and chips. The hotel also provides free shuttle bus to and from the airport Oh, a final word about travel documents: you will not be allowed to enter Britain without your passport. Okay, I think that’s all. Any questions

根据文章第二段“The shore was lined with shining sand”(海岸线上铺满了闪亮的沙子。)
根据第二段第一句“A vast lake or even an ocean, spread far beyond where the eye could see.”(一个巨大的湖泊,甚至是海洋,远远超出了眼睛所能看到的范围)可知,(洞里有)一眼望不到边的湖水;第三段第三句“Under the ‘sky’, if it could be called so, being made of rock, were also vast clouds.”(在“天空”(如果可以称之为“天空”的话)下面,由于是由岩石构成的,也有大片的云)可知,(洞顶)漂浮着巨大的云朵,所以说空间巨大。根据第四段第二句“I felt like I was on some distant planet, and was both amazed and rather scared.(我感觉我在某个遥远的星球上,我感觉既惊喜又害怕)”可知,巨大、陌生又令人惊喜最能描述作者眼中的场景。故选A。
根据文章第六段“Now look under your feet!” cried my uncle and I noticed many bones being crushed under our feet as we walked.”(“现在看看你的脚下!”
又根据第四段前两句“My imagination was powerless before such wonders. I felt like I was on some distant planet, and was both amazed and rather scared.”(面对这样的奇迹,我的想象力无能为力。

根据划线词前文“To find out, he and his colleagues got their hands on nearly 1,000 chicken bones from ancient times across Europe and Asia, some of them up to 2000 years old.(为了找到答案,他和他的同事们从欧洲和亚洲各地收集了近1000根古代的鸡骨头,其中一些有2000年的历史)”下一段“As the authors pieced together the sets of genes of ancient MDV, however, they noticed that the genes were arranged identically to those in modern species.(然而,当作者将古代MDV的基因组合在一起时,他们注意到这些基因与现代物种的基因排列完全相同)”可知,将鸡骨遗骸的DNA与现代物种的基因排列对比发现完全相同,因此划线词与were compared with意思相近,表示“与……相比”。故选C。
根据文章第五段“It suggests that the increased virulence resulted not from large structural changes, but from point mutations(突变). In particular, changes had occurred in the arrangement of a gene called MEQ, which has an essential role in tumour(肿瘤)formation.(提示毒力的增加不是由于大的结构改变,而是由于点突变。特别是,一种名为MEQ的基因的排列发生了变化,它在肿瘤形成中具有重要作用)”可知,MEQ的点突变导致了MDV的毒力变化。故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“To test this assumption, Dr Fiddaman followed up with a daring experiment. He made the ancient form of the MEQ gene and shoot it into living chicken cells. It did not turn on any of the genes associated with tumour formation. In comparison, a modern MEQ gene quickly showed its tendency to cause tumours.(为了验证这一假设,Fiddaman博士进行了一个大胆的实验。他制造了古老的MEQ基因,并将其射入活鸡细胞中。它没有开启任何与肿瘤形成相关的基因。相比之下,现代MEQ基因迅速显示出其导致肿瘤的倾向)”可知,Fiddaman博士通过一个比较实验来证实这一假设。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“By combining ancient and modern genetic biology, the methods pioneered in the paper reveal how, and more importantly why, any virus mutates . That could help scientists tackle other viruses that pull on the purse-strings of farmers—by designing new vaccines(疫苗), for instance—or even to work out how to prevent another global pandemic.(通过结合古代和现代遗传生物学,这篇论文中开创的方法揭示了病毒如何变异,更重要的是为什么变异。这可以帮助科学家们对付其他掏空农民的腰包的病毒,比如设计新疫苗,甚至是研究如何防止另一场全球大流行)”可推知,这一发现为处理其他病毒提供了线索。故选B。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了海洋氧气含量的不足会导致大量海洋生物的死亡,并呼吁人们采取措施拯救海洋生物。
【解析】32.细节理解题。根据第二段中“ In the summer of 2021, an unseasonal event took place. More than 100 miles of Florida’s coast around Tampa Bay became an oxygen-depleted (缺氧的) zone containing dead fish along the nearby shoreline.(2021年夏天,发生了一件非季节性事件。佛罗里达州坦帕湾周围100多英里的海岸线变成了一个缺氧区,附近的海岸线上有死鱼。)”可知,海洋氧气减少会导致海洋生物死亡数量的增加。故选D项。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中“As ocean and atmospheric scientists focus on climate, we believe that oceanic oxygen levels are the next big victim of global warming. To stop the situation from worsening, we need to expand our attention to include the dangerous state of oceanic oxygen levels — the life-support system of our planet. We need to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. (随着海洋和大气科学家关注气候,我们相信海洋氧气水平是全球变暖的下一个大受害者。为了阻止情况恶化,我们需要扩大我们的注意力,包括海洋氧气水平的危险状态——我们星球的生命维持系统。我们需要加快以海洋为基础的增加氧气的气候解决方案)”可知,研究提高海洋氧气含量的解决方案迫在眉睫。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中“We celebrated the return of humpback whales in recent years to an increasingly clean New York Harbor and Hudson River. However, dead fish blocked the Hudson in the summer as warmer waters carried less oxygen.(近年来,我们庆祝座头鲸回归日益清洁的纽约港和哈德逊河。然而,在夏季,由于温暖的海水携带的氧气较少,死鱼阻塞了哈德逊河)”可知,文中先介绍哈德逊河座头鲸的回归,再指出由于水中氧气含量的减少,大量的死鱼阻塞了哈德逊河。作者暗示虽然座头鲸回归,但也可能因为中氧气含量的不足而死亡,作者借此呼吁人们更多关注水中缺氧问题。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“But water without adequate oxygen cannot support life. For the three billion people who depend on coastal fisheries for income, declining ocean oxygen levels are devastating.(但是没有足够氧气的水是无法维持生命的。对于依靠沿海渔业获取收入的30亿人来说,海洋含氧量的下降是毁灭性的)”、第三段中“We need to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. Examples include nature-based solutions such as those discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow.(我们需要加快以海洋为基础的增加氧气的气候解决方案。例如,在格拉斯哥举行的2021年联合国气候变化大会(COP26)上讨论的基于自然的解决方案)”和最后一段中“If we do not save marine life from oxygen starvation, we starve ourselves.(如果我们不把海洋生物从缺氧中拯救出来,我们就会饿死自己)”可推知,文章介绍了海洋氧气含量的不足会导致大量海洋生物的死亡,并呼吁人们采取措施,故“Let Oceans Breathe(让海洋呼吸)”是文章最佳标题。故选C项。

The big time came for us to go onto the stage. With butterflies in our stomachs, we walked towards the center of the stage. The audience gave us encouraging applause, which made us calm down. We took a deep breath and began our performance. Moving gracefully like two real trees, we swung and bent in harmony with each other. Our funny interaction made the audience burst into laughter. So creative were our costumes that we left a deep impression on everyone present. Seconds after our performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. We won the first place for our creativity. We laughed heartily. This impressive contest would stick in our memories.
