In front of the house there was a beach. Peter liked to lie on the stand(看台) when the sun was warming it. From the back door of the house he would walk along a path as far as the sand, and stand by the water looking at the sea. When nothing very interesting was happening on the water, he would go down on his knees and take a handful of sand. Through his fingers ran the sand until only small stones and shells were left. Then, with a large sweep of his arm and with as much strength(力气) as possible, Peter would throw them away as far as he could.
At other times, he would lie on his back and look at the clouds, his hands idly(漫不经心地) searching the sand at his sides. He never stopped playing with the sand and feeling it run through his fingers. He lost himself in the changes of the clouds.
From time to time, some fishing boats came close enough to the beach. Peter could see what the fishermen were doing. Then with his hands clasped(紧握) he would look and look, while his whole body moved with the boat from side to side. When the fishermen pulled their nets or threw them into the water, Peter would do the same with an imaginary(想象的) net from his place on the beach.
On this small beach, Peter had a world of his own.

Some people think that if they don’t have a yard, they can’t keep a garden. Luckily, that’s not true. For people who live in apartment buildings, there’s another choice(选择): rooftop gardens—gardens on the roofs(屋顶).
Rooftop gardens are very popular in cities. Most building roofs go to waste. Putting a garden on your roof is a nice way to turn an empty space into something pretty and relaxing.
Rooftop gardens are not a new idea. About 2,600 years ago, people in Ancient (古老的) Mesopotamia built rooftop gardens. There were such gardens in Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt. These gardens were very important. Many ancient cities had walls. If an army attacked (袭击) the city, the people hid behind the walls. The army usually tried to burn the city’s food, so the people in the city kept their gardens on top of their walls. That way, they could continue to grow food.
Today’s rooftop gardens don’t keep us alive, but they still have nice benefits(好处). Plants take in heat to make the whole building cooler. As a result, people in the building use their air conditioners less. It means more electricity(电) will be saved. One study found that if every roof in Tokyo had a garden, the city would save more than a million dollars a day on electricity.
Rooftop gardening is hard. Here are a few tips. First of all, be safe. Build a fence around your garden. You don’t want the wind to blow plants off your roof! Also, remember that rooftop gardens get more sun. If you have a plant that shouldn’t get too much sun, remember to put it in the shade sometimes.
There are many other things to keep in mind before you start a rooftop garden. Do some research and then give it a try. You’ll make your little part of the city much nicer.

It’s been well over a year since COVID-19 first appeared. Although the virus continued to be a problem in many parts of the world, things are starting to turn back in our favor with the help of vaccines(疫苗).
Vaccine development started in February 2020, when it became clear to scientists that a solution to the pandemic(流行病) would need a global effort to vaccinate as many people as possible. The COVAX(COVID-19 vaccines Global Access) mechanism(机制) was then created to ensure equal access to safe and effective vaccines for all countries and regions, according to Business World.
Although there have been rumors( 谣言 ) about vaccines being unsafe, the majority of people seem to realize the importance of vaccination for building mass immunity(大规模免疫) in order to stop the virus from being spread.
Zhang Wenhong, China’s leading expert on infectious diseases, said it’s good that the world has come to understand that vaccines will protect us, according to Global Times. Zhang added that human beings belong to one family. Vaccines are a kind of medicine that we all must share in order to stay safe and healthy.

On Feb 25 in the Great Hall of the people in Beijing, President Xi Jinping announced China’s “complete victory” in eliminating extreme poverty(消除贫困). China had set a goal of ending poverty by the end of 2020. As the goal was reached, a grand gathering was held in Beijing to mark the nation’s poverty alleviation accomplishments(扶贫成就) and honor model poverty fighters.
China set its poverty line at an annual income of 2,300 yuan in 2010 for each person. By 2020, a person making less than 4,000 yuan a year could be described as living in poverty, according to Xinhua. Over the past eight years, the last 98.99 million people have shaken off poverty, which was one of the goals of the 13th Five-Year Plan(2016-2020). All 832 poor counties(县) and 128,000 villages have also been removed from the poverty list.
The United Nations has set the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (《2030 年可持续发展议程》). China has met its poverty alleviation goal 10 years ahead of schedule. And according to the World Bank, China has helped end 70 percent of poverty worldwide since the late 1970s.
Ordinary people made this achievement possible. Zhang Guimei, 64, created the first free senior high school for girls in China. As the principal(校长) of the Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Lijiang, Yunnan, she helped more than 1,800 students go to college during the past 40 years. The head of a mountain village fought poverty by improving local transportation. Mao Xianglin, 62, is the head of Xiazhuang village. This increased the per capita income(人均收入) to more than 40 times what it was in the 1990s.
These model poverty fighters have worked in many different ways and contributed(做贡献) to China’s success in ending poverty. According to Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University, US, China’s success “should inspire the world.”

Prince Llewellyn was out hunting on his horse in the Welsh countryside. Back home, his newborn son was sleeping as Gelert, his faithful dog, watched over him. While the Prince and his men were riding through the forest, they heard loud barking coming from the direction of the house. The Prince had a terrible feeling. He turned his horse around and ran quickly home.
When Prince Llewellyn walked through the door, Gelert was waiting for him. As soon as he saw his master, the dog jumped up to greet him with a huge smile on his face. The Prince looked at Gelert. Something wasn’t right. When he looked closer he saw blood dropping from the dog’s mouth and fur. Llewellyn ran into his son’s bedroom. The cot was empty. The white things in it were covered in blood. The Prince didn’t think twice. He took his sword(剑)and swung it at the dog. Gelert looked at his master as if he didn’t understand. Then with a final weak cry, he lay down and died.
As Prince Llewellyn looked at his dead dog on the floor, he knew that he had done something wrong. He looked around the room and he saw that there had been a fight. There were clothes and broken dishes on the floor. There was a lot more blood too. And then he heard the sound of a baby crying. The noise was coming from under the cot. The Prince slowly lifted it up. There was his baby son, alive and well. On the floor behind the bed he saw the body of a dead wolf. In most situations, light helps us see. But nowadays humans are using too much of it so that it is in fact a kind of pollution.
When it comes to looking at the night sky, too much light makes it difficult for us to watch some of life’s most wonderful sights: stars, planets and even galaxies.
According to scientific research, about 2500 stars can be seen by the human eye without using any special equipment(装备). But because of light pollution, you can only see 200 to 300 stars from today’s countryside, and no more than ten stars from a city. In most big cities, people cannot see the sky filled with stars like they did in their childhood.
Light pollution affects more than just our view of sky. Research shows that lots of nighttime light can harm wildlife, too. When birds fly to another place over cities, they sometimes get lost by the brightness and fly in circles until they drop from tiredness. Sea turtles need dark beaches for laying eggs, but they can’t find their ideal places because of those bright lights.
Too much light at night may even affect human health, but scientists are not sure of that. They are still learning more.
In order to prevent things from going worse, governments and some organizations are working to reduce light pollution. Many cities and towns have taken action to reduce the use of lights at night. Lights are used only when and where they are truly needed. They also shine lights down at the ground instead of up into the sky and use lower brightness levels.
Hopefully, in the near future, humans can enjoy the clear and beautiful sky again and all the wildlife will live a peaceful and undisturbed(不受打扰)life, too.

Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sadness, failure and success, hope and despair. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to deal with different situations.
Love plays a main role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with love and care. They teach us what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we don’t always care about it. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands others’ feelings.
Happiness can bring people a peaceful mind. No mind is happy without peace. Sadness comes from the death of a loved one or the failure. But all of these things will pass away.
Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a special way. Success brings money, pride and self-confidence.
Hope is what keeps life going. Hope makes us dream. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or boring. So what we can choose is to work hard today, so that we can enjoy a better tomorrow.

For most Chinese people, rice is an important part of almost every meal. But for Yuan Longping rice was more than that. It was his life-long career(事业).
Yuan, known as China’s father of hybrid rice(杂交水稻), created hybrid rice that helps feed the world. On May 22, Yuan died at 91. People around the world were sad to hear of his death.
In the 1960s, people in China didn’t have enough food to eat. Many people even died because of this. Yuan was so sad that he decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice. He thought this rice could feed more people.
At that time, other scientists didn’t think hybrid rice was possible. But Yuan wanted to try anyway. He spent four years looking for wild rice that could be crossed(杂交) with other plants. In 1964, he found it.
In 1973, he grew the world’s first hybrid rice strain(品种). Farmers can grow it on many different kinds of land. It can fight bad weather and disease, too. This kind of hybrid rice has been grown all over China since then. It has helped China feed nearly one-fifth of the world’s population with only about 7 percent of the world's farmland, CGTN reported.
Yuan was a famous scientist. But he called himself a farmer. He spent most of his time in the field. Even in March this year, he was working in a field in Hainan.

For centuries, Italy’s culture has been celebrated around the world. One of its greatest gifts to the world might be the works of Dante Alighieri. This year marks the 700th anniversary of his death. Last year, Italy made March 25 National Dante Day, or Dantedi, to remember the poet.
Dante’s writing often touches on difficult topics, such as politics and philosophy. His greatest work is the famous poem The Divine Comedy. The poem is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. With more than 14,000 lines, the poem describes Dante’s journey through these places.
The poem uses religion(宗教)as a metaphor to discuss hard truths about human nature. In the poem, Dante meets people who have been punished in different ways for the things they’ve done on Earth. Some of these people were based on real government and religious officials who were corrupt(腐败的). This shows the dark side of society in the Middle Ages(中世纪). The poem makes fun of these people through the use of dark humor, as their punishments often fit their crimes(罪行) in clever ways.
Dante used common language that made his works easier for less educated people to read. The poem is also beautiful to read, even if you don’t understand it at first. This is a quality that is rare even in the best writing
Dante’s work was highly influential( 有影响力的) in the development of literature(文学) and other art forms. The Divine Comedy is believed to be one of the most-translated works of literature. Millions of people, from everyday readers to talented writers, have found meaning and inspiration in his work. Artists such as director David Fincher and painter Salvador Dali, for example, have created works that draw heavily from The Divine Comedy.

When you are burying your head in piles of math homework, have you ever thought about why you need to learn math anyway Actually, math is seen as central to scientific progress. Difficult math equations (方程式) must be solved in order for technological progress to happen.
This is why math and its applications are listed as a major national project during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period. The project is expected to receive 1.5 billion yuan in funding, said Yuan Yaxiang, a mathematician and academic (院士) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院).
“We shouldn’t find ourselves in the position of always trying to catch up with other countries and expect that they are willing to share their core technologies with us,” Yuan said.
The funding will be used to build institutions (机构) for scientific research and provide the current ones with new experimental equipment, China Daily reported. It will also be used to train more mathematicians.
For example. Tsinghua University recently carried out a leading talent training program in math. It selected hundreds of outstanding middle school students from across the country to cultivate (培养) talent in mathematics and related fields.
According to German newspaper Die Welt, Chinese students are good at math. Of all the children born in China from 2005 to 2009, 24 million were found to have good math skills. The number was 1.8 million and 940,000 in Japan and South Korea. Many multinational companies like Apple have built research centers in China.

With her eyes feeling increasingly tired and her vision blurry, 16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a semester. “A few of my friends have had the same experience lately,” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that will take effect on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point.
Teachers should also avoid using projectors or other multimedia equipment that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible.
Blue light is bad for our eyes, as it can kill the photoreceptor cells(感光细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic devices we use every day, including our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.
Chinese government has also taken other steps to protect students’ eyesight in China. In May 2020, the National Health Commission urged schools to make sure that students have at least two hours of outdoor activity a day.

On March 20, the Sanxingdui Ruins in Guanghan, Sichuan drew the world’s attention. Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) announced that they have found more than 500 cultural relics in six pits at the site, which dates back over 3,200 years. The relics include bronzeware, gold and bronze masks, ivory, jade and textiles.
The Sanxingdui Ruins, which were first discovered in 1929, are believed to be the remains of the ancient Shu Kingdom. The kingdom was a center of civilization (文明) along the upper reaches of Yangtze River.
In 1986 archaeologists discovered two pits that they believed were used for sacrificial ceremonies (祭祀仪式). At that time, over 1,000 artifacts were found, including bronzeware, face masks and “divine trees”—bronze sculptures of trees.
The discovery of Sanxingdui raised an important question about the origins of Chinese civilization. The ancient Shu civilization that built Sanxingdui is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Chinese civilization. The site, along with the Liangzhu and Shijiahe sites along the Yangtze River, shows that the birthplace of Chinese civilization might not have been only along the Yellow River Basin in north China.
The newly-discovered relics are similar to those found in 1986, as they also include divine trees and bronze masks. They further support the idea that the pits were used for sacrificial purposes.
New kinds of cultural relics have also been dug up. For example, experts found two square zun, a kind of ancient bronze jar that was used for holding water or wine. They also found cong-a jade artifact commonly found at the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins in Zhejiang province.
“These artifacts show that the Sanxingdui site had a close connection with Central China, but it also marks an original ancient civilization (in Sichuan) with strong creativity,” said Chen Xiandan, a member of the excavation (发掘) project.
32.What do we know about the relics that were recently found at the Sanxingdui Ruins
A.They are made of gold.
B.They were all found in the same pit.
C.They were created about 3,200 years ago.
D.They were used for sacrificial ceremonies in 1986.
33.What does the underlined word “artifacts” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.The remains of a building. B.Ancient ceremonies.
C.Historical objects. D.Bronze sculptures.
34.The discovery of Sanxingdui shows that Chinese civilization ________.
A.started earlier than was believed before
B.might have several different origins
C.was centered along the Yangtze River
D.developed from the ancient Shu civilization
35.What do the newly-discovered relics suggest
A.Sanxingdui is more important than the sites in Central China.
B.The Sanxingdui Ruins are part of the Liangzhu Ruins.
C.Sanxingdui was built by the ancient Shu Kingdom.
D.The ancient Shu civilization was creative.

The island of Blefuscu is only about a kilometre to the north of Lilliput. I knew that just beyond the narrow sea separating the two countries there were at least fifty warships ready to attack us, with many other smaller ships. But I kept away from that side of the coast, so that the people of Blefuscu would not see me. I had a secret plan.
From the King’s workmen I ordered fifty heavy metal hooks, each fastened(固定) to a piece of strong rope. I took off my coat and shoes, and walked into the sea with the hooks and ropes in my hands. The water was deep in the middle, so I had to swim for a few metres. But it only took me half an hour to get to Blefuscu.
When the Blefuscans saw me, they were so frightened that they jumped out of their ships and swam to the beach. I then used one hook for each ship, and tied all the ropes together at one end. While I was doing this, the enemy shot thousands of arrows( 箭 ) at me, which caused me a lot of pain. I was afraid of getting an arrow in my eyes, but I suddenly remembered I still had an old pair of reading glasses in my pocket, so I put them on and continued my work. When I was ready, I started walking into the shallow water away from Blefuscu. As I walked through the waves, I pulled the enemy’s warships behind me. When the people of Blefuscu realized that all their warships were disappearing, their cries were terrible to hear.
As I came nearer to Lilliput, I saw the King and all his lords and ladies standing on the beach. They could only see Blefuscu’s warships coming closer, as I was swimming and my head was occasionally under the water. Therefore, they supposed that I had drowned, and that the Blefuscan ships were attacking. But when they saw me walking out of the sea, they welcomed me warmly with cries of delight. The King himself came down to the water to meet me. I became a “nardac”.

A few weeks ago, we attended a lesson given by our classmate Wu Ruijie who talked about some of her experiences in America. It was very interesting and lively, we all listened carefully and were moved by the lesson.
During the lesson, she shared some stories about her daily life in the United States with us and some culture shocks (文化冲突) that she experienced. I still remember the story she told which took place in the New York subway. One day, she was talking to her Chinese friend on her mobile phone while a black woman was standing beside her. She often used a Chinese word whose pronunciation was similar to the rude N-word, so the black woman started to very angrily glare at (怒视) her. This was only one of her stories.
Ms. Tang also shared a story she had experienced when she was in Australia. On a hot sunny day, while she was walking on the street holding an umbrella to protect her from the strong sunlight, suddenly a man behind her said to her, “Is it raining ” The reason is that in Australia people don’t use umbrellas on sunny days, so the man thought it was strange and asked Ms. Tang.
Through the embarrassing stories, we can see many differences from country to country to decide how we should face these situations when we go abroad. Here are some suggestions: First, we should respect everyone wherever we are. Second, learn some local culture before you get there. Third, if you make some mistakes, you should explain the reasons. Finally, keep a kind heart at all times.
All in all, culture shock is not a big deal as long as we treat others kindly. Please pay attention to learning Western culture.

Three teenagers offered to do some voluntary work during the school holidays. They wrote the following reports.
I did some voluntary work in a children’s hospital. The children there all suffer from serious illness. We organized a painting competition for them. I met a girl called Cindy. She wanted to paint a picture of the park near her home. I went there and took some photos of it. Cindy used them for her painting.
Betty
There are many children without parents. I met some of these children with my mother. We taught them to tell stories. This helps them express their feelings. One child said, “My friends don’t understand my pain.” We spent time with a girl called Vivien. Her parents died in a car accident, and she is unhappy and very lonely. She needs friendship. My brother and I will continue to visit Vivien.
Mark
I wanted to help disabled children. They have difficulty walking or moving. I taught them to sing because music can bring them joy and peace. I met a boy called Tim. He hurt his legs in an accident, but he has lots of courage. We need to help children like Tim and raise their spirits. I will continue to do voluntary work in the future.

31.We can most probably find this passage ________.
A.in the textbook B.in a novel C.in the travel guide D.on the website
The word “charity” often brings to mind headlines like “Taylor Swift donates ‘very sizable’ amount to Hurricane Harvey survivors” and “J.K. Rowling donates $30 million to help children in need”.
But the rest of us, who are not rich or famous, may sometimes feel like we can’t really contribute to charity in a meaningful way.
But what you probably don’t know is that Swift has visited many sick children in hospitals and played the guitar and sang for them. Rowling, the UK writer who wrote the Harry Potter series, once read an unfinished Harry Potter book over the phone to a 9-year-old girl in New York because the girl had cancer and wasn’t sure if she would still be alive when the book was published.
These small kindness are just as powerful as money and fame(名气)themselves. Just as Mother Teresa(1910-1997), winner of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, is believed to have once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love. And together, we can do something wonderful.”
This is probably why the annual International Day of Charity, which falls on Sept 5—the same date as Mother Teresa’s birthday—was created by the United Nations back in 2013. On this day, we can clear up misunderstandings we may have about charity and think of the importance of small kindnesses.
People might already be contributing to charity without even realizing it. In the US, for example, many companies give a small percentage of the money they make to charities. And in China, Alipay has a feature called Ant Forest that takes everyday low-carbon activity—such as walking instead of driving—and turns it into virtual(虚拟的)“energy” that is used to grow virtual trees. For every virtual tree that is grown, Alipay and its partners plant a real tree in the deserts of Northwest China.
These efforts may sound too small to make a real difference, but they do. “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” as Mother Teresa once said.
32.The underlined word “contribute to” in the second paragraph means ________.
A.doing something for B.giving money to C.setting up D.organizing activities for

D.it was the birthday of United Nations back in 2013.
34.The underlined word “drop” in the last paragraph refers to(指的是)________.
A.water drops B.a real difference C.small kindness D.a virtual tree
35.The passage is written to ________.
A.tell us the importance of joining different charities
B.ask us to donate money to charity in order to help
C.ask us to plant a real three in the deserts of Northwest China
D.clear up misunderstandings we may have about charity

When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand These days, buying second-hand items is becoming more popular.
Second-hand items are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2020, the mass(质量) of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. So it’s a better choice to reuse old things.
People can even find some “extinct” (绝版的) items, or items that are no longer made. For example, some people like to buy vintage items, including clothes and accessories (饰品). These items often go back 30 years or even more. But as long as they’re in good condition, people can still use them.
Second-hand items connect people. In this way, they sometimes pass on history and stories. Here are two examples.
Zhao Kaiqi, 22, college student, Harbin, Heilongjiang
I love buying books on Deja Vu, an online second-hand trading site. It’s a good choice for students like me. I can save a lot of money. It also brings me interesting experiences that I don’t have when I buy new books. One time, I found a note in a second-hand book. Its previous (之前的) owner left the note, hoping that I would enjoy the book. It was heartwarming to read. I want to do something like that in the future.
Kate, 25, writer, London, UK

School uniforms are a part of the British education system whether the students like them or not. My first uniform included a grey skirt, a white shirt, a green and white striped tie, and a green jumper. I was four years old then. Although I didn’t like wearing it at that time, looking back, I now strongly believe it was a good thing.
A uniform stands for not only equality(平等), but also a sense of community. For example, the FC Barcelona team wear the same uniforms and they stand for their club. Similarly, students wear the same uniforms and look smart representing their schools. I would rather be judged(评判)by my actions and personality than the clothes I wear, and I am certain that a football player would rather be judged by his or her ability and skill level over what they wear to practice.
Uniforms are also very practical to both teachers and students. In a teacher’s view, not only is it easier for them to pick us out in crowded areas on school trips, but it is also easier for them to know us in the classroom, because we wear the same clothes every day. To students, we can stay in bed a little longer in the morning as we don’t have to worry about what to wear.
