三、阅读理解(共15小题,计30分)

The flying fox is not a fox at all. It is a very large bat. It feeds on fruit instead of insects. Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes(脚趾) when they rest. They travel in great groups when flying out. A group will live in one place for years. Sometimes several hundreds of them share a single tree. As they return to the tree before sunrise(日出), they quarrel(争吵) among themselves and fight for the best resting places until the sun has risen.
Often, flying foxes have babies once a year and they give birth to only one at a time. At first the mother has to carry the baby wherever she goes. Then she leaves it hanging up, and brings back food for it. Sometimes a baby bat falls to the ground and squeaks(吱吱叫) to ask for help. Then the older ones swoop(俯冲) down and try to pick it up. If they fail to do so, it will die. Often hundreds of dead baby bats lie on the ground at the foot of a tree.

[外文原味新素材|缉毒松鼠]You must have heard of drug-detection dogs (缉毒犬). But how about "drug-detection squirrels" Recently, Chongqing police have successfully trained six squirrels to detect drugs. They began their work in early February.
Squirrels have a strong sense of smell. They can smell food 30 centimeters under snow. Being so small, they can search for drugs in places where dogs may not be able to reach, such as in narrow or high places. The squirrels are trained to use their claws to scratch (抓) at boxes to tell the police if they detect drugs, according to Chongqing police.
"Our self-developed training system can be used to train different kinds of animals," said Yin Jin, a police dog trainer. The key is to develop the animals' conditioned reflex(条件反射).
First, the animals need to be familiar with the drug's smell. The trainers can put pieces of cloth with the drug's smell next to the animals' food. Next, the animals learn to search for the drug in different situations, such as from a large number of bags or among people walking in crowds. If the animals successfully detect the drug, they are rewarded(奖励) with snacks and other treats(美味食物). Otters(水獭) are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some "otter cafes" are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets.
However, these enjoyable photos and videos mask the damage(伤害) that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many dangers—they have long been hunted(猎杀) for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. When they swim, they need enough space. Their owners' bathtubs or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters simply don't make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack(攻击) people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So, we should stop the otter trade and never share photos and videos about them online.
( )28.Wild otters are facing the following dangers EXCEPT that .

B. people buy and sell them online

( )30.What do we know about otters in the wild
A. Most otters sold online are just one year old.
B. They like to live in family groups.
C. They don't need enough space while swimming.
D. Baby otters never stay with their mothers.
( )31.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us
A. Otters don't make good pets.
B. Otters are dangerous to people.
C. Otters may live a hard life as pets.
D. Otters often make a mess in the room.

Do Animals Really Sleep for Winter
For people who don't like winter, animals that hibernate(冬眠) seem to have the right idea. Isn't it great to bury(埋藏) your head under the covers(被子) until spring comes
But is hibernation the same as sleeping
Well, animals that hibernate spend the winter in a state like deep sleep. But it is different from what happens when you sleep. During hibernation, metabolism(新陈代谢) slows down greatly. When mouse lemurs(鼠狐猴) hibernate, for example, they change their heart rate. Their heart rate drops from 120 beats per minute to 6. slows down, too. Hibernating mouse lemurs can be alive without taking a breath(呼吸) for a few minutes. Their brain activity becomes undetectable(察觉不出的).
According to scientists, hibernation is a way for animals to save energy. It is often seen as winter behavior. However, animals that live in cold areas are not the only ones that hibernate. Some animals hibernate to beat the heat. For some, hibernation does not have to do with temperatures. Some animals hibernate when there is no food. Echidnas(针鼹), for example, can hibernate. They won't go back to normal activities until there's food again. Some animals hibernate to stay safe. Animals don't smell(散发着臭气) or move much when they hibernate. This makes it hard for other animals to find them and eat them.
There are many mammals(哺乳动物) that hibernate. Most of them are small. Little animals usually lose heat quickly. It is hard for them to stay warm in winter, so they need to save more energy than larger animals do.
We human beings don't need hibernation. So, don't be lazy and lie in bed all day long during the coming winter holiday!
( )32.According to the article, during hibernation, animals .
A. lose weight
B. stop breathing
C. slow down their brain activity

( )33.The blank in Paragraph 3 should be filled in with " ".
A. Their growth B. Their breathing
C. Their speed of growth D. Their movement
( )34.The author uses the example of echidnas to show that .
A. hibernation is different from sleeping

A. tell people more about hibernation

六、书面表达
One possible version:
How to protect wild animals
Many wild animals are in danger.
Why are these wild animals in danger Because the environment that they are living in is becoming worse. For example, with the development of cities, the air is polluted and the water is not clean any more. Wild animals' living places are also getting smaller. Many of them don't have enough food to eat. At the same time, many people kill wild animals for their fur, skin, teeth, and meat.
As we all know, animals are our friends. Human beings can't live without plants or animals. We should plant more trees to make homes for wild animals and stop killing them. If there are more plants and more wild animals, the world will become more beautiful, so protecting wild animals is protecting ourselves. Let's work together to protect them.
