Honored as “one of the best ever”, the 19th Asian Games, held on August 25, 2023, in Hangzhou, has been highly praised.
The Asian Games is the largest sporting event in Asia. In 1948, Guru Dutt Sondhi, the leader of Indian sports, felt that the Far Eastern Games were not good enough to reflect the level of Asian sports and the unity spirit of Asian people, and suggested establishing the Asian Games so that all Asian countries could take part in.
The Hangzhou Asian Games is the third Asian multi-sport event held in China, with 12, 417 athletes from all 45 Asian countries and regions participating. Some rising sports that are popular among young people appeared at this Games, such as break dance and e-sports. Weiqi, a mind sport, have returned to the Hangzhou Games after a 13-year absence since it appeared at the Guangzhou Games in 2010. Certain regional sport in Asia, especially dragon boat racing, though not recognized as Olympic sports, also is medal-awarded event at the Asian Games.
The design details of the victory ceremony elements, like the bunch of flower, named “Fruits of Victory”, combines Chinese elements such as rice ears and lotus pods, indicating harvests, and wishes the athletes a journey of accomplishment and honor. The podium (领奖台) displays a purple rainbow on its outside, reflecting energy and innovation. Its white surface shows the spirit of unity, harmony and success among Asian nations and regions.
“Technically, we have had one of the best Asian Games ever. And the coverage of the Games from TV and the written media is also among the highest ever in the history of the Asian Games. The basketball last night (Saturday) attracted almost 17 million TV viewers.” said Vinod Kumar Tiwari, acting director general of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). “We have about 12, 000 athletes participating in the Games. The number of officials and the technical officials is 4, 975 and 4, 700, respectively. This by far has been the biggest and the largest Asian Games ever.” Tiwari added.

A.Weiqi has been a competition event for 13 years.
B.Break dance made its first appearance in the Games.
C.It involved the largest number of Asian athletes in history.

Over the years, April Fools’ Day has become larger than life. While it may be seen as just a bit of fun, there is more to jokes and humour than may be obvious, begging the question: are the jokes on the 1st of April a good or a bad idea
Every year, individuals and newspapers present jokes on the 1st of April that may be funny, yet sometimes causing an unexpected upheaval. One radio announcement made in 1949, that a mile-wide swarm of wasps (一群黄蜂) was heading for Auckland, was taken a bit too seriously. The news even came with advice on how to prepare for the incoming insects, resulting in all residents walking outdoors tucking (塞) their trousers into their socks, wearing masks (面罩) as well as setting honey traps outside their doors.
What makes things funny This is a million-dollar question and one that’s not easily answered. First, it’s influenced by the context, the culture, and personal opinions, meaning that it’s not consistent (一致的) across populations. Besides, if a joke is violating (违反) a norm or rule, it’s more likely to be regarded as funny. Such violations need to be harmless, as they can otherwise be considered unpleasant. In terms of personal experience, serious events may be considered funnier over time, while stubbing (踩) a toe, considered a small violation, would lose its comedic effect over time. Interestingly, people, children, in particular, have been found to be more likely to laugh when they are near others compared to when alone.
Jokes may not seem serious but can actually serve social functions like managing emotions and also be used to deal with matters in work. For example, studies have found that there is a meaningful function of humour in healthcare settings, as it strengthens the connection between medical staffs and patients as well as relieves stressful situations linked to end-of-life care among nursing professionals.
However, it’s suggested that jokes be used cautiously. For example, David Letterman gained reputation (名声) for an interview he had done with Lindsay Lohan in 2013, when the audience had laughed loudly at his repeated questions about her going to receive treatment. However, 8 years later, his comments were seen as offensive (冒犯的). So it’s important to ensure that any violations made are not significant enough to damage your future fame.
28.What does the underlined word “upheaval” probably mean in paragraph 2
A.Upset. B.Fun. C.Annoyance. D.Popularity.
29.What can we learn about jokes from the passage
A.People’s opinion of jokes differs. B.Jokes remain humorous all the time.
C.Jokes can strengthen our connection. D.Children are more likely to laugh than adults.
30.How does the author mainly share her understanding of jokes with us
A.By listing figures. B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving examples. D.By answering questions.
31.What’s the purpose of the text
A.To tell us the function of jokes. B.To provide information about jokes.
C.To help make up funny jokes. D.To propose telling jokes carefully.

It is well-known that earthquake is one of the most serious natural disasters. Because of its sudden nature, the traditional earthquake prediction method is often difficult to predict it accurately, and has always been a difficult problem in the field of earth science. Recently, artificial intelligence is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations (强度计算) for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they used a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics (地震物理学), and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the Al provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background sounds in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-drive n earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and possibly improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has locations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location in 300earthquakes for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, are what moves science forward,” says Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
32.What can we infer from the passage
A.AI can predict earthquakes accurately.
B.AI is provided with accurate strength calculations.
C.AI can prevent the potential earthquakes from coming.
D.AI forecasts earthquakes by analyzing background sounds.
33.What makes Texas a better place to do the follow-up tests
A.Building many earthquake stations. B.Over ten years of continuous records.
C.Reliable earthquake tracing networks. D.Researcher’s confidence in the technology.
34.What is the author’s attitude to the AI algorithm
A.Indifferent. B.Supportive. C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.
35.What’s the main idea of the text
A.AI helps reduce possible earthquakes by 70%.
B.AI predicts earthquakes with a certain accuracy.
C.AI algorithm improves earthquake preparation worldwide.
D.AI algorithm produces accurate predictions about earthquakes.

The International Day of Happiness, falling on March 20 every year, serves to remind people of the significance of happiness. 36 Experts in various fields hold different answers to them.
Sally Lyubomirsky, a researcher of positive psychology, provides a clear description of happiness. 37 combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful and worthwhile.
People’s levels of subjective (主观的) happiness are influenced by both internal factors and external factors, according to the authors of the book Culture and Psychology. 38 These include their natural personality traits, the quality of their relationships with others, the society they are a part of, and their ability to meet their basic needs.
39 In an article published on Iran Public Health, three researchers show how twin studies have suggested that genetic factors count for 35-50 percent of happiness. The study also mentioned two genes that may have an effect on happiness, which may help explain the genetic base of happiness in the future.
From the perspective of economics, Ted Pettinger, said that factors affecting happiness can include income, quality of work and quality of consumption. Among them, proper income is key. He believes that at low levels of income, increasing income is generally agreed to increase happiness as it allows a person to buy necessary goods and services such as health care and education. 40
The truth is that happiness itself is different for everyone, so everyone defines it differently and pursues it in a variety of ways.
A.Several important factors contribute to a person’s happiness.
B.In general, happiness is significant to people.
C.With the income, people can have the food, shelter and necessary education.
D.According to her, happiness can be described as the experience of joy or positive well-being,
E.However, after certain income levels, rising income contributes little to overall happiness.
F.More than that, experts in medical fields found that genes might influence happiness.
G.But what exactly is happiness and how can one achieve it

Be Like Dad
Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.
I was in my study on a cold Sunday in May 2020 when I glanced out the window and saw my dad’s car parked in our driveway. He was walking from my front door to his car, about to leave. Why would he drive all the way to my house, only to turn around and leave Had the doorbell stopped working I raced downstairs, opened the door and yelled “Dad! What are you doing ” I shouted.
My dad lives forty minutes away, and I hadn’t seen him since COVID-19 because we were following the health-department guidelines to self-isolate and not leave the house, so it’s strange that he would show up.
He smiled and pointed beside the door, where I could see a bright yellow begonia (秋海棠) plant.
“I know it is Mother’s Day, but... I’m not a mother,” I was puzzled.
My dad smiled. “But I think you should get flowers, too, my dear son.” With that, he winked and drove off.
That evening, I called to thank him and told him how touched I was that he had driven such a long round trip just to leave begonias on my doorstep.
That’s when he let me in on his little secret. It turns out I wasn’t the only receiver of an act of kindness from him. To keep away from the loneliness during epidemic he decided to do acts of kindness to remove the social isolation (隔离,孤立), and it made him so happy to see the smiles on people’s faces.
“But why ” I continued.
It just had started a couple of weeks before, when a friend of his was having a tough day and called him to talk about it. He knew she loved ice cream, so after ringing off, he went straight to the grocery store, bought a huge ice cream, drove to her house and left it on her doorstep. Then he called from the driveway to tell her to look outside.
“She just beamed when she saw it. I don’t think leaving her a million dollars would have made her happier.”

Dear Lucas,
We are grateful for your enthusiasm in celebrating our class winning the first prize in the English Debate Competition. Your support means a lot to us!
Based on the survey I conducted, more than 50% of us are enthusiastic about sharing food and drink, while 31% favour an English movie night, followed by 12% who prefer a weekend outing. My preference is in line with the last group, so I suggest a hiking trip along the nearby greenway, which has lively plants and stunning views. Such an outing is perfect for us to take a break from study routines, strengthen friendship and make our success more memorable.
Thanks again for your thoughtful gesture. Looking forward to our exciting celebration! (119词)

Dear Lucas,
Thank you for trusting me to survey our classmates’ preferred activities for celebrating our success at the English Dram a Festival. Here are the results and my personal opinion.
From the survey, outings on weekends and English movie nights are favored by 12% and 31% of us respectively, with 57% keen on sharing food and drinks. To meet the varied interests, I would recommend we organize an outdoor gathering at the city park, where we can bring various foods and drinks to share. I believe this plan would ideally satisfy those seeking an adventure and those who wish to relax and enjoy good company.
Thank you once again for your support and for considering my suggestion! (113词)

After listening to story after story like this, I was inspired. This year made me realize how short and fragile life is. And my dad was making a difference in people’s lives, and it was making him so happy. I want to start performing acts of kindness, too. I want to be more like my dad. Be the reason some one feels loved. After I got off the phone with him, I immediately went online and ordered some supplies to make up gift bags to use for my own acts of kindness. Actually, in the following days, sometimes if they happened to be connected with me through social media, I would see a post about how this surprise had made their days. Yes, my dad was right: It felt amazing. (116词)

M: Yes, I am. I’ve got a great feeling to score the winning goal.
W: You seem to be bouncing back after a difficult start this season.
M: Yeah. It isn’t easy to change coaches so early in the season. It’s an accident to me, but luckily everything is working out really well. So we’ll celebrate next.
W: And are you feeling confident about the game next week (7)
M: Yes, definitely. (7) We know what we have to do.

W: This is amazing! I can’t believe you’re all here! (8)
M: Did you honestly know nothing about it
W: No! I was just planning a quiet dinner party at home.
M: No way! You can’t do something so boring. It’s your 30th birthday! (9)
W: Still... I can’t believe it! How long were you planning it for (9)
M: Hmm... I started organizing things back in March, so about three months. (9)
W: Wow! And you’ve invited absolutely everybody!
M: And they all seem to be getting along really well, don’t they
W: Yes, they do. Look at my grandpa, dancing with my friend Sarah! (10)
M: She’s one of your co-workers, right
W: No, we lived together at university, (10) but we were not in the same class.
M: Ah yes, that’s right! I remember you rented an apartment with others. (10)
W: It’s just wonderful. Thank you so much for organizing it.
M: You’re very welcome.
W: Oh dear, I’m going to cry again!

M: Hello
W: Morris! I’m glad I can finally return your call. What did you want to talk about
M: I wanted to ask about seeing Mom and Dad this spring. (11) Do you want to go with me
W: I’d love that. Plus, we haven’t seen our cousins or childhood friends in months. How are you planning on getting there
M: I was considering taking a road trip.
W: Sounds like an adventure. Where do you want to go
M: I thought we could leave London, (12) head to Southampton, and then drive along the southern coast to Cornwall.
W: Interesting. Do you have any specific places in mind that we should visit
M: We’ve visited all the main tourist attractions, beaches, and restaurants. So, let’s just spend some quality time together seeing something new.
W: Brilliant. Should we rent a car or use your vehicle (13)
M: We’ll need to rent a car. (13) Mine isn’t running well at the moment.
W: I’ll take care of the vehicle rental. I’ll call the local rental company now and send you the information about the car. (13)
Text 9 (第14题为总结题)
M: You don’t have time to draw much recently, right
W: Why do you ask
M: You just haven’t posted any new pictures on your social media account s lately.
W: Well, I can’t draw much at the moment because I need a new stylus (触笔).
M: What’s a stylus
W: A special digital pen. I generally draw on my iPad, (15) but my little brother broke mine.
M: Oh, no! Really That’s not like Finn! Was it an accident
W: Yeah. He was pretty upset about it. My parents have bought me a new one, and he’s doing housework to pay them back.
M: Well, that’s good.
W: Yeah. But it won’t arrive for a while. I wanted a particular one from China, and delivery to America takes over a week. (16)
M: I see. Can you just draw with a pen and paper while you wait
W: I can, but it’s harder to upload the images to social media. I tried to teach myself how to use a drawing program on the computer, but I couldn’t get used to it soon.
M: Never mind. You’ll get your new stylus soon.
W: Yeah, I can’t wait! I took loads of pictures on my holiday to France, and I want to draw them!
Text 10
Hi, kids! My name’s Jason, and I’m here to introduce a few animal friends of mine to you. But first, let me just tell you a bit about myself. I’ve always loved animals. For many years, I was a keeper at Chester Zoo. (17) It was my job to take care of the zoo’s tallest animals. Who can guess what they were Yes, that’s right. The giraffes! Eventually, I left to work in a wildlife conservation center. (18) I now travel around to give speeches to teach both kids and adults about the wonderful creatures that exist on our planet. And sometimes I guide visitors around the center like you and train volunteers. (18) I know that you’ve obviously been studying wild animals recently. I particularly like that painting of an African elephant on the textbook you show me! Sadly, we don’t have any big animals in the center today, but we’ve got some really cool little friends for you to meet. Before we meet the first animal, let’s talk about the rules. Firstly, I know you’re excited, but many animals are scared of loud noises, so we all need to speak quietly, okay Secondly, you can touch most of the creatures, but only with my help. Never try to pick them up by yourself, okay Lastly, we always wash our hands after petting the animals, and especially before eating. That’s really important. (19) Now, I’ll go get our first friend, the national treasure of Australia! (20)
