①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Definitely in ten years…and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle (车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy.” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most aircraft need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be tricky, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.
⑤What do you think Would you enjoy riding to school or visiting a friend in a self-flying taxi Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future
34.What is Sebastian Thrun’s opinion about the future of flying cars

“Are the roses alive or dead ” Mary asked him.
He went up to an old tree and pointed at the branch. “It was dry and grey, but there was a small green bit growing on it.”
“This bit’s alive,” he explained. “But there’s a lot of old wood that is dead. We must cut it off. There are going to be lots of roses here this summer.”

Personally, there is nothing I love more than asking “stupid” questions, especially the ones that have no right answers. I remember once asking some kids what time it was, at home, in Singapore, and finally on the Moon. After a long silence, finally a shy girl ventured (试探地说) to say that it was “every time” followed by an energetic Einstein who shouted it was “no time”. Both kids shared that week’s Noble Prize because no humans live in that faraway world and time is created by humans.
As a matter of fact, we are all good at asking questions by nature, but sadly as we age, we get used to the world around us and take things for granted. We became more results-oriented (注重结果的) and concentrate our efforts on success. If something is working, don’t fix it or worry about the cause; just relax and go with the mon belief may work well, but that does not mean it is always right. Throughout history, it has been those who have questioned common belief and those who have challenged our common-sense ideas of the world that have been the ones to have brought about major progress in human civilization.
In 500 BC, the ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round because sailors on the sea had noticed that the farther south they went, the more different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became interested in this question and ended up demonstrating the “crazy” concept of heliocentrism (日心说), in which the Sun lies at the center of the universe while the Earth circles around it at 30 kilometers per second. But if the Earth is spinning around so quickly, why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet The answer to this question would not be clear for another century.
People like routine, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. While those who challenge common belief tend to be subjected to abuse, the progress of humankind would have otherwise been impossible without these persistent people and their “stupid” questions.
42.What commonly happens to us when we grow older according to the author
A.We focus too much on process.
B.We still refuse to relax and go with the flow.
C.We start to challenge common-sense ideas of the world.
D.We gradually lose the ability to question common belief.

a. The ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round.
b. Galileo Galilei raised the concept of heliocentrism.
c. We know about the concept of gravity.
d. Sailors noticed something special.
A.adcb B.adbc C.dabc D.dacb
44.Who might have solved the question “why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet ”
A.An ancient Greek scientist living in 500 BC.
B.Galileo Galilei living between 1564 and 1642.
C.Isaac Newton living between 1643 and 1727.
D.Albert Einstein living between 1879 and 1955.
45.How does the author develop his writing on the whole
A.By comparison and contrast B.By using supporting examples.

China’s “four great new inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment.
Living in Hong Kong, I knew them from the papers, the TV and the Internet. But last month I had the chance to experience all of them.
As usual, the golden week stopped the traffic. It was hard to get a railway ticket anywhere in the train stations. But I bought a train ticket to Beijing on the Internet and paid for it through Zhifubao. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is regarded as a “name card” for China.
China’s HSR has also gone abroad. In 2014, China finished building its first foreign high-speed rail in Turkey. In June 2015, China and Russia agreed to build the 770 km of high-speed railway connecting Moscow and Kazan. In October 2015, China helped Indonesia to build a high-speed rail between Jakarta and Bandung.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. After getting off the bus, my friend told me that the bus stop is far from his home. I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We only need to use our mobile phones to scan the Quick-Response code (二维码) on shared bikes, and then we could ride the bikes anywhere we wanted to go. It was so cool!

My best memory in middle school
There are many wonderful memories during my school life. One of my best memories is the dancing competition.
I still remember that I didn’t have much time to get myself ready, and it seemed that I had little chance of winning the competition. However, I never gave up. Though I was tired after my busy daily studies, I still managed to practice for at least one hour in my spare time. In the competition, I did my best and won a special prize.
This experience has brought me pleasure and success. I not only have developed my skills, but also I have formed closer friendships with my classmates. The most important thing is that I have found the courage to face the difficulties.
