Lying can use up your brainpower. It might make you worse at doing a job or skill. Lying can be bad for relationships, too. Let’s learn more about it.
Different Types Of Lies
People who lie the most tell more than 15 lies every day. These people lie for many reasons. They might have low self-confidence. They might want to cheat or steal. However, Some lies are meant for good. Maybe your parents gave you a sweater for your birthday. You might tell them you loved it. But really you didn’t. The lie makes your parents feel good.
Brain Works Harder When You Lie
Lying takes much more work. Imagine you are late to class. The teacher asks why. You decide to lie. Now you have to come up with a story. Or you have to remember a story you made up on your way to class. Your teacher might ask questions. You will quickly have to decide how to respond (回应).
By lying, you gave your brain a lot of extra work. It is because that work is mostly done in one part of the brain. It sits behind your forehead. Working memory happens in this part of the brain. It is a type of memory. It keeps things in mind for a short while. This part of the brain has other jobs, too. It helps you plan and solve problems. And it helps you control what you do.
Lying Is Hard For Young People
The prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) is located at the front of your brain. This part of the brain helps us understand risk. It’s also in charge of a lot of our higher-level thinking, such as planning and self-control.
All of these skills use up a lot of brainpower. There is less left over for other things. Your brain might be slower. It might make more mistakes. On top of that, lying is hard for younger people. That’s because their brains are still growing and forming.
▲
People do not have to lie to make others feel good. They can do so while telling the truth. It is more important to reward people. Telling the truth can be rewarding sometimes. It feels good.

Does the university you attend or the major (专业) you choose decide your success in the future According to a recent survey, 48.6% of the people believe that the university plays an important role in shaping their future. But 33.8% of the people think one’s major is more important.
Fu Xi is a student at Peking University, one of the top universities in China. He thinks his university does bring many unseen advantages. “If I had no academic (学术的) training or experiences of different clubs in college, I wouldn’t have successfully got my first internship (实习) in a leading bank,” Fu told the reporter from China Youth Daily. As for him, students could improve their abilities through internships or academic activities to make themselves ready for a job or further studies, no matter which major they choose.
However, Chen Yufei, 20 years old, who studies Japanese at Tianjin University, doesn’t think so. ▲ After getting lower scores than expected in Gaokao, Chen lost the chance to study her favorite major — Chinese. “Having no interest in Japanese, I felt unhappy when taking Japanese classes in the first year,” Chen said. Later, she had problems in finding her dream job. “Different majors will lead to different jobs which finally lead to different incomes (收入),” Chen added. She thinks that even students who major in Japanese at well-known universities will most probably make less money than those who major in computer science.
Both the university and one’s major are important, but they don’t necessarily decide your life, according to Chu Zhaohui, a professional researcher of the National Institute of Education Sciences. “For students, personal development is closely connected with their performance in the university,” Chu said.
52.From Paragraph 2, we know that ________.
A.Fu Xi is really thankful to his university
B.Fu Xi doesn’t enjoy working in a leading bank
C.Fu Xi can succeed, no matter what university he chooses
D.Fu Xi dislikes his major, but he tries to improve his abilities
53.Which of the following can be put in the ▲
A.She believes she should study computer science instead of Japanese.
B.She believes both university and major are the key to one’s success.
C.She believes that a right major has much more weight than a good university.
D.She believes whatever your major is, you must study hard.
54.In the last paragraph, Chu Zhaohui’s words are mentioned to ________.
A.teach students how to choose a good major and university
B.show what students think about the survey is reasonable
C.tell students that one’s future depends on his major and university
D.advise students to pay more attention to what they do in the university

①Scientists know that our weight, mental health and blood pressure are connected to our sleep habits. So are your grades — a new study finds. It showed that sleep caused nearly one-fourth of the difference among students’ grades in a class. And sleep habits seemed to have a bigger influence on boys.
②Jeffrey Grossman, a scientist at the Massachusetts University wanted to study sleep in the real conditions. To find out if sleep connects performance in exams, his team turned to Fitbits — wrist bands (手环) which can follow how long people sleep and how often they wake up.
③The high technology product helps his study. The researchers invited 100 around 18-year-old students. Each got a Fitbit to wear all term long. At the end of the term, the researchers checked the students’ sleep data (数据) and then compared it with the students’ test scores. They got to know the importance of sleep for students.
④The researchers found that teens who woke up very often during the night were likely to perform poorly. The same went for those who didn’t get enough sleep. But how much someone slept the night before an exam had nothing to do with the person’s grade. So, is staying up late studying before the big test OK No! That’s because there was another thing: consistency of sleep a week and even a month before an exam. That means a student who sleeps 7 hours every night will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one night and 6.5 another night.
⑤Sleep hours, quality and consistency together caused 24.4% of the difference among the students’ test grades. What’s more, they are especially important for boys. The researchers are not sure why. But they found a boy who didn’t get good sleep might do worse in an exam than a girl who had the similar sleep quality.
⑥According to the process and results of the research, helping students get more sleep partly depends on schools starting their days later. But more importantly, students themselves must have a clear idea of the importance of good sleep. That may require getting more sleep and cutting down late evening use of phones and other screens. Even if you have plenty of after-school activities, schoolwork and a social life, you still need to get your sleep.
56.The underlined word “consistency” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.behaving in a short time B.behaving in the same way
C.behaving in the right order D.behaving in different forms
57.According to the passage, we can infer (推断) that ________.
A.students with different quality of sleep have no difference in grades
B.students who sleep for more hours before the exam must have higher grades
C.students should play an active part in developing good sleeping habits
D.students staying up before a big exam can’t make a good result in grades
