Human voices produce much more fear in wild animals than the sound of lions, a study in South Africa has found.
Scientists played recordings of people talking normally through speakers hidden at water holes in the Kruger National Park. About 95% of animals were completely scared and quickly ran away. Compared with human voices, recordings of angry roaring lions elicited much less alarm.
During the experiment they noted that some elephants even tried to walk towards the sound when hearing the lion calls. The study's findings suggest that the animals including elephants and giraffes have learnt that being close to humans is completely dangerous. It is the result of hunting, the use of guns and the use of dogs to catch them.
The fear that animals show goes further than the Kruger National Park. A worldwide research shows wildlife fears humans more than any other animal-killers, according to the study.
The researchers note that this produces a difficult task for areas which depend on wildlife tourism, because the human visitors they want to attract are scaring off the animals that they come to see. The findings also open up the possibility to protect endangered animals in the wild. Human sounds, when used properly, could help protect against hunting. "We are working on experiments testing whether we can stop endangered animals from coming to hot hunting areas, the researchers said.
