W: For a long time, people have been bearing their garbage. Unfortunately, there is less and less empty land, but can
be used as garbage places in our planet to yet more and more garbage is being produced each year. How should we manage
our garbage Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs
These are two of the most important questions in the modern world, and many people are trying to find the answers.
Some people think that we might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest that garbage should be used
as an energy source. For example, some cities in the United States have been burning garbage to create fuel for years.
But studies have shown that it is not a good idea. Burning garbage for energy causes many serious problems. Garbage
that burns easily, such as plastics and paper, must be separated from metals, glass and other materials that do not burn easily.
This separation process is very costly, therefore not being done in most places. Another huge problem with burning garbage
is air pollution.

A new survey has found that Sri Lanka’s elephant population remains healthy, though the island nation has been at
war for decades.
Sri Lanka has 5,879 wild elephants. Their number was once thought to be about 5,350. The new figure shows that the
country’s elephants are in good health and that their population is growing. The survey also found more than 1,100 baby
elephants among the wild elephants. There were some 12,000 elephants living in Sri Lanka in 1900, but that number has
decreased because of illegal hunting and loss of habitat.
More than 3,500 people took part in the three-day survey, checking water sources where wild elephants go to drink.
However, some of the wildlife groups said they had had some difficulties before they began the survey earlier this month.
The groups said that the Sri Lankan government wanted to use the count as a survey to hunt the animals.

66.Dear Alice,
I am worried to know that you should be so addicted to TikTok these days. Playing with TikTok too much is bad for
your health. Besides, if you spend so much time on it, I’m afraid you will fall behind your classmates sooner or later.
In my opinion, you should find something interesting to do if you want to relax. For example, take a walk on the
playground with your friends. Alternatively, you can chat with your classmates, which will cheer you up. It doesn’t mean
that TikTok should be completely refused in our life, but playing too much will surely affect our study.
I know you have a strong will and you are clever. I believe you can get rid of this bad habit quite soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

Thai wildlife officials have laid out a plan to bring peace to a central Thai city after at least a decade of human-monkey conflict (冲突).
The monkeys that hang around Lopburi are a major tourist draw. But after years of conflicts with residents and visitors, and several failed attempts to bring peace with population controls, local people and businesses have had enough.
The monkeys often try to take food from humans, sometimes leaving people with injuries. In March a woman got her knee hurt after a monkey pulled her off her feel, and another man was knocked off a motorcycle by a hungry monkey.
The authorities hope to catch some 2,500 monkeys and place them in massive wildlife preserves, said Athapol Charoenshunsa, the director-general of the Department of National parks, Wildlife and plant Conservation. They’ll work with wildlife experts to find a way for a limited number of monkeys to stay freely in the city, he added.
“I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” he told reporters during a news conference in Bangkok. “I expect the first period of the operation to start within weeks, and I believe the wildlife preserve will be able to contain (容纳) thousands of them and will solve the problem very quickly.”
Athapol said they are also working in other areas of Thailand that are facing problems with monkeys. He said 52 of the country’s 77 provinces often report monkey problems.
The monkeys are said to be a symbol of the province, about 140 kilometers north of Bangkok, where the ancient Three Pagodas temple celebrates a yearly “Monkey Buffet” festival. However, some have complained about the city’s monkey troubles on tourists and residents feeding the animals, which they say drew monkeys into the city, helped with their numbers, and got them used to getting food from humans.
24.What does the underlined phrase “have had enough” mean in Paragraph 2
A.They are fond of those moneys. B.They hope to feed more monkeys.
C.They are troubled by those monkeys. D.They want to protect those monkeys.
25.How will the authorities deal with those monkeys
A.Cut off the monkey’s food supply. B.Catch them for use as research subjects.

The Fire Festival is celebrated in northern Ghana. It’s a holiday we had never heard of before we came to live in a village here as Peace Corps community volunteers. It’s unbelievably great.
On the Fire Festival — Bugim Chug u in the local language — drums beat a quick and regular rhythm that locals dance to in a circle of bodies, men and women, the old and young, holding torches of burning grass above their heads, which stands for the light and getting off negative energies.
At this moment, this festival is being held at the beginning of the lunar year. The locals are all so involved in the celebration that they don’t pay as much attention to us as they normally will. When they find us getting involved as they are, they dance more vigorously and scream with joy.
Danielle, a friend of mine in the Peace Corps, says, “That we join in the celebration is significant because foreigners here are typically seen as the representatives of other organizations, not as people who are willing to join in the Fire Festival rituals (仪式). But in fact, we are dancing and celebrating as one.”
Our two-year Peace Corps service will finish up in mid-November. We can think of no better way to say goodbye than by celebrating the Fire Festival with the villagers we’ve come to know. The festival lets us see a different side of them — and lets them see a different side of us. The neighbors who sell rice are now the women who urge us to run faster and dance harder at the Fire Festival. And rather than view us as low-key (低调的) volunteers, they see us as the ones who have crazy dance steps with wild screams.
28.Why did the author go to northern Ghana
A.To find a job. B.To go traveling.
C.To study further. D.To do voluntary work.
29.How do the locals feel when seeing the author and Danielle join in the celebration
A.Annoyed. B.Excited. C.Confused. D.Worried.
30.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The steps to dance well.
B.How the locals celebrate the Fire Festival.
C.How the author and Danielle help the locals sell rice.
D.The reason why the author and Danielle joined in the festival.
31.What can we learn from the text
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
D.The grass is always greener on the other side.

Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人) . They are made of something like the ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary- like the wall of a box-it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”
32.What makes the robot roll faster and faster
A.The ribbon. B.The central axis.
C.The shape and material. D.The higher surface temperature.
33.How does the author introduce the new soft robots
A.By explaining the robot’s working ways. B.By quoting experts’ opinions.
C.By making some comparisons. D.By offering reasons and results.
34.What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring-bots
A.Unclear. B.Favourable. C.Negative. D.Doubtful.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.The New Soft Robots B.Ribbons and Their Rolling
C.Three Creative Movements D.Twisted Rings and the Axis

Sometimes, we meet with situations that cause us to feel angry to the point we may want to erupt like a volcano or curse (咒骂) someone out. 36 Here are some replies online to the question about how to deal with anger.Go for a swim, lift weights, and practice other forms of exercise!
Science suggests that hearing, seeing, or swimming causes our brain to produce neurochemicals that increase blood flow to the brain and heart. “ 37 I like to lift weights. It completely takes the edge off. Heavy bag work is good for cardio and reducing anger. Yoga is great for both exercise and meditation,” wrote u/JackFunk.Eat a healthier diet.
Proteins such as fish, tofu, and chicken, help us produce higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, which are chemicals in the brain that play a role in your mood, motivation, and concentration. “I found that some foods messed with my stomach. 38 Over time I have removed various foods from my diet, and it has really helped,” u/JackFunk also wrote.Write your feelings down.
Whether it’s quick sentences or journal entries, writing down how you feel is a great way to release negative emotions. “ 39 Pour your heart out… and if you’re worried that someone else may read it later, you can burn it to release the energy,” wrote u/ChoiceFabulous.
40
“If you have trouble not getting angry when discussing something or trying to work through a problem with someone, always imagine the conversation is being videotaped. If you keep that in the back of your mind, you will always think about what you say, and it could help keep your mind from the anger,” wrote u/therealtidbits.
A.For me, nothing is better than exercise.
B.Whenever I can’t help getting angry, I read.
C.Pretend that when you get angry people are watching.
D.Whenever I can’t exercise or burn out the feelings, I write.
E.Anyway, there are always better ways to handle when angry.

As a hectare of mangrove forests (红树林) can absorb as much carbon as four hectares of rainforests, they 56 (regard) as the most efficient “sponges” (海绵) for carbon on the planet since last century. But cutting down mangrove forests prevents some areas from absorbing carbon, and it also 57 (release) carbon remaining in the soils.
In 2013, the Mikoko Pamoja carbon project began to conserve and protect 117 hectares of mangrove forest around the village Gazi, Kenya. It was the first project to turn blue carbon, 58 (store) in mangroves, into an economically workable programme. The project also has 59 (effective) reduced environmental crimes such as illegal logging and poaching (偷猎). “Joblessness is the reason why the youth usually engage 60 poaching and illegal logging in Kenya,” says Samuel Mutisya, a previous poacher. “If carbon projects can create jobs for people in the village, then the society will start seeing forests and wildlife as 61 (they) banks.”
The local fisherman Abdallah Mohamed, 62 is not involved in the project, has also noticed 63 (benefit). “The fish returned after the community stopped taking firewood from the mangroves. Our indigenous trees are aslo coming to life because there are 64 (few) disturbances,” he says. “This project is really of great 65 (significant).”

Mother’s Day was around the corner. Everyone in the class was discussing what gift they should give to their beloved moms. Their teacher, Ms. Jenkins, was instructing them to make pretty postcards with a soulful message.
On Monday morning, Ms. Jenkins entered the classroom. Before she could say something to greet the kids as usual, 8-year-old Simon raised his hand as quickly as possible.
“Yes, Simon ” asked the teacher with a questioning look and the big smile often hanging on her face.
“Excuse me, Ms. Jenkins. What did you get for Mother’s Day ” he inquired.
All his classmates looked at their teacher and Ms. Jenkins smiled again, struggling to hide her sadness, which flashed across her face. “Sadly, nothing. Simon, I don’t have kids.”
Simon felt sorry for his teacher. He could not figure why. It seemed unfair that she didn’t receive anything for Mother’s Day when she was surrounded by kids all the time. She should have received something. Suddenly a good idea hit him.
That afternoon, school over, Simon flew home like a rabbit. After having finished counting the few dollars in his piggy bank, he asked his mother to take him to the flower shop nearby.
When they got in the car, Simon explained to his mother what he would do. Having understood the whole story, his mother looked at him with a loving expression.
The following day, Simon arrived at his classroom with a bunch of flowers and presented it to Ms. Jenkins with a bright smile. “I know you’re not a mother, but you treat us with kindness, affection and patience. You surely deserve a Mother’s Day gift, too,” he said to his teacher, whose jaw dropped in shock. The other kids applauded as Simon hugged Ms. Jenkins.
