Two deadly earthquakes hit Turkiye and Syria on Feb.6, 2023, bringing down thousands of buildings.A 7.8-magnitude earthquake happened, followed by another strong earthquake.
These earthquakes were the strongest ones to have hit Turkiye in more than 80 years.More than 50,000 people had died in the earthquakes.Millions of people had been affected(影响) by the earthquakes, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
International search and rescue(救援) teams rushed to Turkiye to give their help.There are more than 8,000 international rescuers.China sent an 82-member China International Search and Rescue (CISAR) team.Up to Feb.14, the rescue team had helped save more than 20 lives, according to the news report.Chinese civilian(民间的) rescue teams also went to help.Take the Blue Sky Rescue team for example, it had saved eight lives and found 137 casualties (遇难者) during the whole rescue.
Things were even more serious in Syria.Many of the people there had already lived in camps.They lost their homes after the war broke out in 2011.Because of the earthquakes, people there are living a more difficult life now.
The earthquakes have also caused damage(破坏) to thousands of buildings in both countries.Some of them are historic sites.Gaziantep Castle, for example, fell down after the earthquakes.The site was built by the Roman Empire.It has a history of more than 1,500 years.
