1 董宇辉与直播带货
Dong Yuhui was a teacher at New Oriental, an English-language training organization. On June 9th 2022, he became a big hit online by selling agricultural (农业的) products through live-streaming (直播). Agricultural products, like fruits and beef, are from plants or animals.
Unlike other live-streamers, Dong talked about what he would usually talk about in a classroom, both in Chinese as well as in English, before coming to the point. But his viewers just loved it.
“It’s very good,” someone said. “I feel like being in a classroom.” That very evening, sales from his live-streaming reached 15 million yuan ($2.23 million), while his video was put on the daily hot list on popular short-video platform Douyin.
New Oriental is finally seeing hope after a year of struggle. It faced its biggest challenge after the Ministry of Education introduced a national policy banning (禁止) after-school training.
New Oriental finally found a way to overcome its difficulty: Selling agricultural products through live-streaming.
Its struggle should serve as an inspiration for other organizations that have been badly hit because of the new policy. In fact, several video-sharing apps are already planning to attract live-streamers for agricultural sales. By October 2021, at least one app had got 126,000 “new farmers” born after 1995, who could clearly tell their viewers how they were growing fruits and vegetables and attracting more people to buy their products.
There are yoga and boxing teachers, as well as carpenters(木匠), who share their knowledge or skills online and make money. It’s a new way to express themselves better.
1.People can buy things through Dong’s live-streaming room EXCEPT ________.
A.cellphones and watches B.grapes and beef C.rice and corns
2.Why did “new farmers” tell their viewers how they were growing fruits and vegetables
A.To let more people fall in love with fruits and vegetables.
B.To make more people be their friends.
C.To attract more people to buy their products.
3.How long did New Oriental spend struggling with its difficulty and finally see hope
A.About a week. B.About a month. C.About a year.
4.From the passage we know ________.
A.the Ministry of Education introduced a national policy to close New Oriental
B.audiences love Dong very much
C.only teachers like Dong can express themselves better
1.A 2.C 3.C 4.B

2 人工智能影响 (AI 数字人; chatGBT)
The Rise of Digital Humans As we all know, AI humans now can be like real people. They can do real people’s voices and moves and even copy their personalities (性格). Digital humans today appear in many ways. They can be idols (偶像), vloggers (视频博主), reporters, and more. For example, China Daily has its own digital reporter, Yuanxi. She can speak English and covers the wonderful world of Chinese culture. She can process (处理) data fast. This can help the newsroom work faster. In February 2022, Chinese tech company Baidu showed its first digital idol Xi Jiajia. She can change her makeup and how she dresses, and even do livestreams! During China Fashion Week in September 2022, Xi Jiajia became famous in an online virtual fashion show (虚拟时装秀) .
________________ The first copyright case (版权案件) about AI-created images in China had its first result from the Beijing Internet Court (北京互联网法院). A man surnamed Li is a Chinese social media Xiaohongshu account (账户) owner. He used an AI image generator in February to make a picture. And then, he posted the picture on Xiaohongshu. However, a lady surnamed Liu used the picture in March and cut off the Xiaohongshu watermark (水印) in her post in Baijiahao, a blog-style platform under Baidu. The court found that this was an act of infringement (侵权) and said the lady must make a public apology and pay 500 yuan to Li. The court decided that the AI-generated picture had “originality (独创性)” and that such pictures should be known as works and protected by copyright law (法律). The court said that Li made the setting of the AI model based on his needs. The image was produced based on his ideas and showed his own expression. So, Li is the creator of the image and owns its copyright.
Exploring AI at iFLYTEK In November, our school went to iFLYTEK for a study tour to get a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence (AI). The teacher first introduced some common knowledge and real-world uses of AI. For example, AlphaGo beat the Go world champion while ChatGPT passed the Chinese Medical Practitioner License Examination (中医师执业资格考试) with high scores. After visiting, we came to believe that AI may be able to do things that humans can not. Then we experienced iFLYTEK’s Starfire model. To test its functionality (功能), we suggested a Chinese writing topic about happiness that we had been thinking about for a long time. At first, Starfire gave us a common response so we weren’t happy with it. One student said, “This article has no standout (出色的) features. I think it should include some character descriptions .” After many suggestions and revisions (修改), the AI’s final essay won our applause (掌声) .

“Because of the hardship, as a child I had many dreams and hoped to make big money for my parents in return,” Zong said in a history book. 15 自动驾驶
Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
Why do we develop self-driving care
Self-driving cars give us many benefits (好处). They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams and better parking of car for disabled or blind people. Self-driving cars also help them get around more easily. Each year, over 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world. Many more are injured. Self-driving cars could reduce road accidents by 90% and save governments a lot of money. The main causes of car accidents are human mistakes. By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose attention like humans do.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react as fast as a human driver could. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars would have trouble seeing the lines on the road. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system could also get hacked by someone, causing it to crash or change its direction.
It’s clear that there’s much work to do to make self-driving cars common and safe on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen.

17. 机器人手术
French doctors and American scientists have reported doing an operation in which the doctor was outside the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation.
Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France.
A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area. Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine. The robot moved the tools that cut the woman’s gallbladder (胆囊) away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.
Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor’s order to a robot to move the tools quickly.
Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make much smaller movements than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor’s hand cannot.
Doctors say such a robotic operation will make safer and better operations possible in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where doctors work.

18. 人类对海洋的影响
Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of our planet. But new research shows that it is also changing the sound of the earth’s oceans and seas. Scientists say these changes influence many sea animals—from very small fish to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals to find food and avoid their hunters (猎人). Many ocean animals use sounds to find good places to give birth. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive (生存).
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration (爆炸), and other noisy human activity. For many sea animals, their efforts to communicate are being masked (被掩盖) by sounds that humans have introduced. Experts explain the word “masking”, which happens when one or more noises in the water block (阻截) sound important to an ocean animal’s life.
The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important shipping passages (航道). It is full of large ships traveling to Asia, Europe, and Africa. Some fish and other animals now avoid the noisiest areas. Also, the total number of sea animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.
Experts say that influence of noise on sea animals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss (丧失). The stress from human noise might also influence the immune (免疫) system—an animal’s natural defense system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels of stress because of noise.
When people think of threats (威胁) facing the ocean, we often think of climate (气候) change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another necessary thing we need to be monitoring. When it comes to something humans can do for the ocean, we need to think about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can reduce or turn off sound right away. It’s not like plastics or climate change, which are much harder to undo.

A World of Words
Today, we find ourselves in a digital(数字的) world of words, with much of our reading and writing taking place on a screen. And the more we rely on technology, the less we use traditional writing equipment. Sometimes, when we pick up a pen, we perhaps pause, trying to remember how to write a word. Then, it might strike us just how much we value the charm of handwriting. China has a rich history of handwriting art, especially Chinese calligraphy.
The Four Treasures of the Study
For many Chinese, it won't come as a surprise to learn that these four writing devices, the brush, xuan paper, ink stick and ink stone, are included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage items(国家级非物质文化遗产) of China.
Brushes are traditionally made from animal hair. The tips of the writing brush is of great importance, as soft or stiff bristles produce a variety of effects. With a history of over one thousand years, xuan paper plays a key role in Chinese calligraphy and painting. To use the ink, the stick is rubbed with water on an ink stone. This traditional method of producing liquid ink gives the calligrapher more control over the thickness of the ink and its texture.
Timeline of Calligraphy Masterpieces
The earliest known examples are called jiaguwen that date back to the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE). These picture-like characters (文字) gradually evovled, and during the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE), a more standardised calligraphy , xiaozhuan began to emerge. During the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE), lishu began to be widely used. This started a new age and led to more fluent and su pple scripts, such as kaishu, caoshu and xingshu.
There is an old saying that learning kaishu is like a baby learning to stand, with xingshu likened to walking, and caoshu to running. This means that one should first master the basics before progressing to the next level. Or like the English saying, “ Learn to walk before you run.”
One of the Greatest Masters of Chinese Calligraphy
Stories about the masters of calligraphy have been passed down from generation to generation. Known as the” Sage of Calligraphy” , Wang Xizhi (303-361 CE) could be said to best represent the heart and soul of Chinese calligraphy.
Wang Xizhi lived during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 CE) and started calligraphy at an early age. It is said that he practised calligraphy so much that the water in the pond near his house turned black with him washing his brushes in it day after day.
