Long ago, the Emperor Yao saw a large dragon flying through the clouds. There was a beautiful girl on its back. Wondering who she was, he sent his archer(弓箭手), Hou Yi after them. Hou Yi, who had magic wings(翅膀), flew after them until he reached a mountain.
A dangerous animal stood in front of the mountain. Hou Yi quickly killed it with his bow. He then went into the mountain and saw a beautiful woman with many lovely fairies. He realized that she was the Queen Mother of the West.
When asked the reason for his visit, he explained that Emperor Yao sent him to look for the girl on a dragon’s back. The woman told him that the girl was her daughter. And she served him lots of delicious food. To show his thanks, Hou Yi helped them build sixteen palaces and a gate.
Before he left, he got some magic medicine. When he returned home, he put the medicine away and planned to take it later. However, his wife, Chang’e, found the medicine and ate it. Then she rose up to the Moon.
The gods felt sorry for Hou Yi, so they sent him to the Palace of the Sun. There they gave him a golden bird. It was the bird that woke up the people on the Earth with its crowing(啼叫)every day.
