Rivers are the lifeblood of human civilizations. As one of the longest-lasting civilizations in the world, China has about 45, 200 rivers running across the country, and each of them flows more than 50 square kilometers.
The most well-known ones are the Yangtze and Yellow rivers. As the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, the Yangtze River is about 6, 300 kilometers long. It flows through eleven provinces. Second to the Yangtze River is the Yellow River. At about 5, 464 kilometers long, it runs across nine provinces.
Besides its rich natural rivers, China also has a lot of beautiful man-made rivers. With a history of more than 2, 500 years, the full Grand Canal is nearly 3, 200 kilometers from the north to the south of China.
These rivers and canals feed the Chinese people and culture. The Yellow River, for example, is known as one of the “mother rivers of China”. It helps feed 12% of China’s population, irrigates about 15% of its farming land, and gives water to more than 60 cities. These rivers are marked in Chinese culture. Many writers wrote poetry and stories about them.
Just as the saying goes, “Clear water and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. ” To protect these rivers, China has taken action in recent years to stop river pollution. Through hard working, our rivers have seen many changes—birds flying above the wetlands and farmers happily harvesting (收获) on rich lands. We’re on our way to live well with our rivers.

The giraffe is the tallest modern land animal.
It can be over 5. 5 meters tall. Its neck bone may be 1. 9 meters long. Yet the giraffe has only seven bones in its neck, the same number as in the human. Even a small bird has many more bones in its neck than a tall giraffe. Each bone in a giraffe’s neck is very long, while the bones in a human’s neck are small. That makes the difference. A female giraffe gives birth to one baby at a time. The baby, called a calf, is about 1. 9 meters tall at birth. By the age of eight it is full-grown. The giraffe can live for 30 years. The giraffe is good at running and it can run 30 kilometers per hour. The giraffe likes to live together, usually seven to ten a group. The giraffe eats mostly leaves. Because it has a long neck, it can reach the leaves high up on the trees.
