The title of "Aaron's younger brother" was given to me at the age of six. It was a label stuck to me and all people had to do was to refer to the imaginary label and they would know how to address me. I wanted to defeat Aaron, whose fame had reduced me to a nameless tennis player. Then the day eventually approached.
As I shook Aaron's hand at the start of the match, I stared at him with determination. "I’m going to beat you today." I gathered the confidence to claim over the outcome of the match. Aaron laughed carelessly as he turned his back towards me. For a brief moment, I regretted that display of over-confidence.
I nervously shifted my weight from one foot to the other. The tennis court seemed to stretch out further than usual. My sweaty hands tightened around my racket (球拍) — the fifth one passed down to me from Aaron. We entered into a heated fight. I was persevering as expected, and I was not sure how long it would take before I withdrew. We were down to the last round, neck and neck in points. I made a mistake, then Aaron leaped up, stretching his arm out. The sun cast his image over me, reminding me that I would always be walking in his shadow if I couldn't prove myself.
I readied myself for the finishing blow, images of Aaron's past matches flooding through my mind. I recalled the habit of his hit in the World Tennis Tournament, extending my arm to the left in anticipation of where the ball was going to land. The ball made contact with my racket and was lobbed(吊高球) over Aaron's head. He could do nothing but witness his undefeated status being erased by his younger brother.
While I was still enjoying the unfamiliar feeling of victory, a man whom I recognised from a professional club approached me."What is your name, son " he asked. A smile spread across my face.
24. What used to trouble the writer
A. The longing for recognition. B. The eagerness to bear labels.
C. The desire to be a tennis player. D. The hardship of physical training.
25. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the match
A. Defeated. B. Anxious. C. Optimistic. D. Honored.
26. What can we learn about Aaron from paragraph 5
A. He adopted his usual trick in the match.
B. He purchased a tennis racket for the writer.
C. He had an obvious advantage in the last round.
D. He withdrew from the World Tennis Tournament.
27. Which is the best title for the text
A. The Price for One Mistake B. From Nobody to Somebody
C. Why Brotherhood Matters D. Aaron's Last-minute Victory

Many westerners find it so interesting that they always see Chinese people carry a vacuum(真空) cup no matter which season it is. If you go to a restaurant in western countries, they usually serve you a cup of cold Water, sometimes even with ice. And every time when Chinese people ask the waiter if they can change to hot water, actually they may receive a strange look from the waiter or people nearby. Hot water Seriously Why do Chinese people drink hot water The answer may exist in the following aspects.
Actually, water quality became a matter of debate in the 1930s in China, when the water supplies were polluted. In order to prevent people from infectious diseases, the government suggested people drinking boiled water, because they considered it a way to kill off bacteria. They always boiled water daily and stored it in a kettle to keep the water warm for the day. Even now, you can find hot water devices everywhere, in schools, factories, and government departments across the country.
Besides, it is well known that Chinese people prefer hot meals every day. Therefore, some parents always teach their children to drink hot water with meals, because they think mixing cold liquids with hot meals is really bad for the stomach, and cold liquids may solidify fats in your stomach, which can cause digestive problems, while hot liquids aid in digestion.
According to the traditional Chinese medicine, health is due to an internal balance of Yin and Yang. In the Yin-Yang theory, water is Yin-type while hot stuff is Yang-type, drinking hot water can enrich Yin and tonify(滋补) Yang in your body, keeping Yin and Yang in balance. If you have cold symptoms(症状)or other Yin-type imbalances such as frequent chills, thirst, depression or sleepiness, hot water plays the role of the Yang and brings your body back into balance. Doctors of traditional Chinese medicine always tell patients to drink more hot water.

Thanks to the 1999 Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, 26 endangered species in Australia have seen their populations recover.
It seems like that we're always hearing about new animals that have become endangered, but there's some good news in Australia: 26 animal species no longer meet the criteria(标准) to be listed as threatened. Australia’s biodiversity has been in decline, with more than 1,700 species and ecological communities known to be on the line. In 1999, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act was passed to introduce protections for endangered animals. The burrowing bettong is one of 26 Australian species that have returned from the edge of extinction.
Seemingly these are working, as a recent study published in the journal Biological Conservation reviewed the animals that were previously or currently listed as threatened between 2000 and December 2022, and discovered that 26 species had recovered to no longer meet the criteria. Species that have seen improvement include the charmingly named burrowing bettong, the golden bandicoot and the bulloo grey grasswren.
Factors behind this improvement include habitat management, control of introduced predators (捕食者) and translocation of endangered animals to predator-free islands. However, the species have not been officially delisted at this time. The EPBC Act only allows species to be delisted if doing so will not have a negative effect on their survival, and researchers believe that conservation gains could be lost should management efforts be stopped.
Dr Michelle Ward, a conservation scientist at WWF Australia, told The Guardian, “The key problem with delisting species is that then they no longer have monitoring and no longer need certain funding plans.”
However, it is promising that researchers have found signs of improvement. Hopefully this will continue among these and other species!
32.What do the underlined words “on the line” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Out of place. B.At risk. C.Under control. D.On the increase.
33.What did a recent study find
A.Some animals are facing extinction.
B.Burrowing bettong is a charming species.
C.The criteria to be delisted were hard to meet.
D.26 endangered species’ populations are recovering.
34.The species haven’t been delisted officially because ________.
A.their living situation is severe B.the delisting consequences are uncertain
C.the conservation gains are short D.the habitat management level is poor
35.What is the author’s attitude towards the researchers’ discovery
A.Unconcerned. B.Doubtful. C.Positive. D.Worried.

How To Spend The Holidays Productively
To get the most out of your holidays, you can make a calendar of the things you need to do and schedule in time for a mixture of fun activities and productive tasks.

Luckily, you can help counteract both of these things by spending about 30 minutes a day exercising. For instance, you might go for a jog on a track, try some light aerobic exercise, or do weight training.
Volunteer to help out in your community. 39 Most communities have a year-round need for volunteers, although you may find that there are more opportunities around the holiday season, when many organizations run extra clothing and food drives.
Create a plan for the year ahead. As the year draws to a close, take a little time to think about your year ahead. 40
A. Exercise each day to stay healthy and relieve stress.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The concept of “gap days" 56 (appear) on a variety of social media platforms recently. Unlike a gap year, a gap day means an 57 (extreme) brief period of relaxation and escape from everyday routine. After resting, people will continue to devote 58 (they)to the busy pace of normal life.
Apart from "gap days", other similar expressions have made 59 hit on the Internet, such as"city walk", "da zi (activity partner)" and so on. This growing trend of creating new phrases or euphemisms(委婉语)for something otherwise ordinary and common has caused 60 (heat) discussion.
Some people think that these kinds of new phrases better cater to (迎合)people's mindsets, 61 (show) their optimism. For example, the common expression “taking a walk” is neutral(中性的). But “city walk” 62 (be) the positive version of it, meaning "to explore the city with a curious mind".
Others disagree, however, and think that it's simply just a kind of "sugaring up", satisfying one's need for showing off. For example, "city walk" is the same as "taking a walk" 63 general. But by calling it a "city walk", people feel like they are doing something fancier than it actually is.
But no matter how we think of these phrases, they have taken root in our daily lives and have already gained wide 64 (recognize) among the younger generation. So 65 we need to do is not make them out to be bigger than they actually are.

She was six years old when I met her on the beach near where I live. I drive to this beach whenever the world begins to close in on me. She was building a sandcastle and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea.“Hello," she said. I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child. I was depressed:my life seemed completely out of balance.
“What's your name " She wouldn't give up. "Ruth," I answered. "Mine's Wendy...I'm six." She giggled,"Nice to meet you, Miss Ruth. Do you want to play Maybe we can build something together. You'll be happy!" She looked at me eagerly, waiting for my answer.
I just couldn't refuse this lovely creature. I asked her: "Why don't you go to school " "I don't go to school. Mommy says we're on vacation." She chattered little girl talk as we built the sandcastle. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day. Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed. She pointed toward a row of summer cottages and told me she lives there.
Three weeks later, I rushed to my beach in a state of near panic. I was in no mood to even greet Wendy when Wendy caught up with me, "I'd rather be alone today." She seems unusually pale and out of breath."Why " she asked. I turned to her and shouted,"Because my mother died!" "Oh, " she said quietly,"then this is a bad day." "Yes, go away!""Did it hurt when she died ""Of course!" I shouted. She didn't say anything more, tears rolling down her face.
A month or so after that, when I went to the beach, she wasn't there. Feeling guilty, ashamed and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up to the cottage and knocked at the door.

第二节(满分 25分)
A drawn-looking(憔悴的)young woman with red and swollen eyes opened the door. “ Hello ,” I said, “I’m Ruth Peterson. I missed your little girl and wondered where she was.” “Oh yes, Miss Ruth, please come in. Wendy talked of you so much,” She said in a very low voice, “Wendy died last week because of leukemia...” Struck dumb, I couldn’t believe my ears and couldn’t even breathe, my mind racing for something, anything, to say to this miserable young woman. But I couldn’t force a single word, tears welling up in my eyes.
“She left something for you,” her mum’s voice trembled and handed me an envelop. I opened the envelope with blank mind. Inside was a drawing in bright colors: a yellow beach, a blue sea and us. Underneath was carefully printed: BE HAPPY. I took Wendy’s mother in my arms. “I’m so sorry, I’m sorry ...” I muttered over and over, and we wept together. The precious little picture is framed now and hangs in my study. It’s the gift of love. The two simple words speak to me of harmony, courage and undemanding love.
