New York City: the Big Apple
New York City is known by many nicknames (昵称)—such as “the City that Never Sleeps” or “Gotham”—but the most popular one is probably “the Big Apple”. Although uses of the phrase are documented in the early 1900s, the term first became popular in the 1920s when John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer, started a column about horse racing called “Around the Big Apple”. However, it wasn’t until a tourism campaign in the 1970s that the nickname came to be related to New York City.
Mumbai: the City of Dreams
With an estimated population of 18.4 million people, Mumbai is one of the most popular cities in India. Mumbai is not only the financial center of India but also the home of Bollywood, one of the most popular Indian movie industries, making this city a particularly attractive place to move to. The opportunities here are endless, which is why Mumbai is often referred to as “the City of Dreams.”
Sydney: Harbour City
Located on the southeastern coast of Australia, Sydney is a city that takes advantage of its location. Once a major port city, Sydney is sometimes called “Harbour City” in honor of this real estate. People enjoy hitting the beach to go surfing or snorkeling (浮潜) and one of the most recognizable buildings, the Sydney Opera House, is right on the harbor!
Paris: the City of Love
Whether it’s because French is considered the “language of love” or because of the romantic walks along the Seine River, Paris has distinguished (区别) itself as the “City of Love”. Paris has long attracted those with labors of love, such as writers and artists. Love can be found everywhere, from its cozy cafes to the Arts bridge.

I always pictured myself graduating from college, getting a cool job and even having a cute little place of my own. So far, I have a master’s degree and the coolest job ever as a physician assistant. But instead of waking up in a pretty apartment, I hear the early morning sound of my parents making coffee downstairs. At 27, I still live with my parents, and I love it.
As a physician assistant, I make a good salary and would be able to live on my own comfortably if I needed to do so. By the time I finished graduate school, I had had a $150, 000 debt from both undergraduate and graduate education. My father figured out that my loans were increasing by $15a day in interest (利息) alone. At this rate, it would take me 30 years to pay off my student loans. At last, I decided to live with my parents.
Several of my physician assistant friends are in the same boat as I am—we are all highly educated, white collar employees who live at home. Our colleagues in the medical field think it is a great idea because many of them are facing the same difficulty. They often say if they could do it all again, they would do the same thing.
There’s a stigma (耻辱) that comes along with this arrangement. Some people might think that we are too lazy to find a job. I don’t think my neighbors understand it, as they continually ask me when I am going to graduate and if I am old enough to look after their children. My mom just tells them that I’m successful, well educated and that I save lives.
24.What did the author once dream to do before
A.Take care of her parents. B.Have her own beautiful house.
C.Make her parents pay for her living. D.Live with her parents after graduation.
25.Why did the author decide to live with her parents
A.She missed them very much. B.She couldn’t cook by herself.
C.She needed to repay a huge debt. D.She was not willing to support herself.
26.What is the author’s colleagues’ attitude towards her living with her parents
A.Critical. B.Approving. C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested.
27.Why do the author’s neighbors often ask her to look after their kids
A.She is a helpful lady. B.She is popular with kids.
C.They don’t think she has a job. D.They know she is well educated.

Many dishes make up the world of Garifuna food, but hudutu is probably its signature (明显的特色). The dish is closest to Yolanda Castillo’s heart.
The head chef of Chicago’s Garifuna Flava, Castillo developed a love for food earlier. It was in her native country of Belize that she learned the secrets of making hudutu. “My mom showed me the traditional way of cooking our Garifuna food.” she says.
After moving to Chicago with her husband, Castillo stayed true to her roots, gathering family members for grand meals. Not a single visit happened without someone praising Castillo’s ability to copy her mother’s traditional Garifuna recipes.
“My husband would always say, ‘One day, I’m going to open a restaurant for her.’” Castillo says. In 2008, the couple’s restaurant, Garifuna Flava, opened its doors in Chicago. In addition to Garifuna food, Garifuna Flava serves up Belizean food like rice and beans. “It’s amazing to see how many people from around the world have been here to taste our Garifuna food.” she says.
“Garifuna food, in particular, tells us a Caribbean story and a Central American story,” says López Oro, whose work focuses on later generations of Garifuna immigrants. “It gives us an opportunity to really think about the generational history of Garifuna migration.”
Though hudutu requires much work, Castillo uses a food processor to speed things up. The more hudutu she’s able to make, the more she’s able to sell—increasing the possibility of introducing the food to a wider, ever-hungry audience.
“I think people are really devoted to making hudutu a household name,” says López Oro, referring to the dish and the urgency many Garinagu feel about protecting their history, in part, through their food’s most famous dish.
28.What did Yolanda Castillo do after settling in Chicago
A.She gathered families every weekend. B.She maintained the traditions of the food.
C.She developed a true love for cooking. D.She got married with Rhodel Castillo.
29.What can we know about Garifuna Flava
A.It has received diners from many countries. B.It was passed down from Castillo’s mother.
C.It mainly serves people rice and beans. D.It has already become a tourist attraction.
30.What can we infer about Garifuna food from the words of López Oro
A.It is easy for people to cook by themselves. B.It has been well-protected throughout history.
C.It inspired him to study the Garifuna history. D.It reflects the mixture of different cultures.
31.Why does Castillo use a food processor to make hudutu
A.To promote Garifuna food more efficiently. B.To follow health tendency in the food industry.
C.To increase the real income of her restaurant. D.To improve the attraction of hudutu worldwide.

Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu 1 only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories (配饰) a friend gave me. It occurred to me that I had been trapped in the “birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. Weeks ago, I was shopping in the company of my friends. One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook that her sister gave her, so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading, and thus love reading, not just reading. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But the friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead ”
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the “birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to carry on using the “birdcage effect”. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started writing again.
But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the “birdcage effect” in the opposite way Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can set them apart. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of throwing away and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate properly, and encourages ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly abou
A.The application of the “birdcage effect” in life.
B.The necessity of using the “birdcage effect” in life.
C.The turning point of the author’s idea on the “birdcage effect”.
D.The author’s conflict with her friend over the “birdcage effect”.
33.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience
A.To recall her delightful days at school. B.To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C.To confirm the positive of the “birdcage effect”. D.To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
34.How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively
A.By realizing this effect has two sides. B.By promoting our personal consumption.
C.By recognizing this effect is not so terrible. D.By guiding our acts to go with our goals.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B.Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C.The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D.The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage

Setting limits on TV and video games for kids isn’t always easy in today’s screen-filled world. Here are some tips parents can use to decide how to limit their kids’ screen time.
Model healthy electronic use
36 . Before you watch your favorite Netflix series, remember that you are setting an example to your kids with your own time spent in front of a screen. Keeping the TV on for background noise all the time may not be modeling the screen-related behavior you hope to see in your kids.
37
Today most of kids know more about electronics than adults do. Parents need to stay up-to-date on the latest apps, games, social media platforms and trends (动向). For example, you can’t teach your child about the risks of social media unless you understand the dangers yourself.
Create “Technology-Free Zones (区域)”
Establish zones in your house where electronics simply are not allowed—when they’re cell phones, handheld video games, or laptops. 38 . They are the space you could keep reserved for having meals and family conversations.
Set aside time to unplug (拔掉插头)
Set aside time for your whole family to unplug from their technological devices. Dinnertime and family meeting time are two examples. 39
Encourage other activities
With plenty of apps, games, devices and content, it’s easy for kids to become dependent on electronics. 40 . Playing outside, reading a book, or even digging out an old board game are just a few ideas.
A.Educate yourself on electronics
B.Invite questions from your child
C.One example is your home’s dining room or kitchen
D.You can join an online group where you can get support
E.Parents need to be role models of screen use for their kids
F.Encourage your kids to go for activities that don’t need a screen
G.When you all agree to do so, your family will spend quality time together

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
Mai Lin wasn’t doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn’t satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
“Let’s review the material we learned in the last unit,” the history teacher said. “Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812 ” Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn’t call her name. They hadn’t studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn’t know the answer.
“Alison ” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course, Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school—always surrounded by millions of friends. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn’t made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher’s question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she’d be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. That day, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling (天花板) and said, “Everybody! You’re going to climb this rope (绳子) today.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing the teacher’s words, Mai Lin smiled. ___________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope. _______________________________________________

Dear Sam,
Knowing that you’re interested in my recent study trip organized by my school, I am pleased to share relevant details of it with you.
Aiming to broaden students’ horizons, our school organized the study trip to Ganzhou recently. On our arrival, we were shown around Gree, a branch office, where we had a general understanding of what a successful company was like. What impressed me most was an opportunity for us to enjoy ourselves in the adventure theme park Ganzhou Fount, as well as perform a scientific experiment in the lecture hall. All the experiences above in Ganzhou promoted my strong desire to study harder.
What an unforgettable experience it was! If possible, I am looking forward to another study trip.
Yours,
Li Hua

[范文赏析]
Hearing the teacher’s words, Mai Lin smiled. She knew what was coming. They’d done lots of physical fitness training at her old school and she was quite good at rope climbing. “Who’s first ” the teacher asked. “Alison ” To Mai Lin’s surprise, Alison turned as pale as the moon and shook her head. “She’s scared,” Mai Lin thought. “Perfect Alison was scared.” Suddenly Mai Lin heard her own voice saying, “I’ll do it.” Alison looked up at Mai Lin in great surprise, and all the other classmates seemed surprised, too. The teacher nodded and told Mai Lin to climb.
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope. She appeared calm but was extremely excited. She climbed the rope very fast and reached the ceiling within what seemed a few seconds, effortlessly. As she reached the top, she glanced down at her fellow students below. Now it was Alison who appeared like a small ant. She saw Alison looking up with admiration, with eyes open wide. Mai Lin hung at the top of the rope for a moment and then headed down to join the class. Once she got on the ground, everybody cheered. Mai Lin knew she would be different from that day on.

W: That’s a good idea. But if you want to travel first class to make your journey more comfortable, it’ll be very expensive.
M: I certainly won’t. I’m more concerned about saving money.
W: Then have you considered travelling by train It’ll save you a lot of money.
M: No. A train stops at every station. I don’t have enough time. Time is the most important thing.

W: Good afternoon, everyone. Today we’ve invited Mr. Wang to give us a speech about the Harbin Ice Festival.
M: Good afternoon, everyone. The Harbin Ice Festival is one of the world’s four largest ice and snow festivals, along with Japan’s Sapporo Snow Festival. Canada’s Quebec City Winter Carnival, and Norway’s Ski Festival.
The festival officially starts on January the 5t e very year, but the locals begin to celebrate the festival in the third week of December of the previous year because most of the ice lanterns, ice and snow sculptures are completed by this time. Depending on the weather conditions and activities, the festival usually lasts until the end of February.
As early as the 1980s, the ice lanterns in Harbin were known about by many tourists from all over China. The unique snow and cultural activities have been the subject of the government’s attention. When government officers met tourists from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau they found that their guests were very excited about Harbin’s ice lanterns, ice culture, winter activities and snow, and then they had an idea about holding an ice and snow festival to promote Harbin’s tourism. The officers came u with this idea in October 1983. after more than a year’s effort, their suggestion was accepted by both the Harbin Municipal Government and Heilongjiang Provincial Government. On January 5, 1985, the first Ice Lantern Show was declared open at Zhaoling Park.
