Several art projects are on show to warn people of the climate change happening around us.
Video on the walls
Photographer Camille Seaman has traveled to both the North Pole and the South Pole, where she has captured the disappearing ice in photographs and video. Camille Seaman made a video with some of her most powerful photos of melting ice for people in four coastal cities to display on their buildings. The video ends with a prediction that sea level will rise by 2050 without relative action.
Mural (壁画) changing color
Temperatures in Austin, Texas, are on the rise, and climate change will put the city at higher risk of extended drought, wildfires, intense rain and flooding. Artist Lope Gutierrez-Ruiz designed a unique mural that changes color as it gets hotter. This artwork calls for people to change the world and change climate change, underlining the importance of individual actions to the collective future.
Public billboard (广告牌)
Artist Christine Sun Kim released a public billboard on the 710 Freeway called The Sound of Temperature Rising. It points to the reality of climate disaster that has become all too clear on the West Coast and the need for significant change now. The illustration features a graph (图) of music notes that get progressively longer and redder.
Anti-Extinction Library
Globally, species are disappearing at an unheard-of rate. In response, architect Mitchell Joachim created The Anti-Extinction Library in New York. The sculptural piece is not only beautiful but also functional. Their unique egg-shaped library has a special freezer storing test tubes with the frozen cells and DNA of rare animals and plants.
It's important for people to realize we must quickly work to protect the rights of different species in our area.

Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners. In a new study, dog owners took 2, 760 additional steps-compared to people who didn't have a dog at home. But here's the real good news: That extra exercise was-done-at a moderate (适度的) pace, which means it could help adults meet their recommended weekly totals for physical activity.
The research, published in BMC Public Health, focused on adults 65 and older, who tend to be less active than younger people. The study included 43 dog owners and 43 non-dog owners, all of whom were monitored continuously for three week-long periods. When they compared the two groups, the researchers found that dog ownership was associated with a large, potentially health-improving effect.
Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners, 119 minutes versus 96 minutes on average. They also took an additional 2, 760 steps, and had eight fewer continuous periods of sitting down. Most of that extra walking was done at moderate pace, defined as 100 or more steps a minute. Dog owners walked at this pace for 32 minutes a day, versus just 11 minutes a day for non-dog owners.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week. This increased walking time alone could just about satisfy that requirement, say the researchers-so it makes total sense that 87 percent of dog owners in the study met these guidelines, versus just 47 percent of non-dog owners.
Co-author Nancy Gee says that pet ownership may help older adults get more activity or maintain their current activity level for a longer period of time. “This could improve their chances of a better quality of life, improved or maintained cognition (认知) , and perhaps, even overall longevity (寿命) ,” she said.
Here at Health, we'll add that caring for pets has been shown to have plenty of other physical and mental health benefits, as well. As animal lovers ourselves, we're happy to add one more to the list.
24. What can we learn about the research
A. It was targeted on old people.
B. It was sponsored by the WHO.
C. It had an undesirable effect on dog owners.
D. It took the mental health of dog owners into consideration.
25. What does the author intend to do In Paragraph 3
A. To present the results of the research. B. To show the guidelines of the research.
C. To describe the process of the research. D. To explain the reasons for conducting the research.
26. What does Nancy Gee think of owning a dog
A. It is too expensive. B. It is time-consuming.
C. It enables older adults to live a healthy life. D. It helps young adults to keep a healthy routine.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Non-pet owners enjoy more pleasure B. Animal lovers are more generous
C. Young people walk less today D. Dog owners walk way more
C
Is there any such thing as a salt tooth We are familiar with a sweet tooth, along with the negative effects of sugar. We are broadly aware of the disadvantages of too much salt, including high blood pressure, which puts pressure on the blood vessels (血管) , the heart and the kidneys. It can also lead to water retention (水肿) . But we don't tend to police how much salt we eat-at least, not as rigorously as with sugar—or question whether we are just paving attention to our bodies, which require some salt for muscles to work properly, or we are being controlled by a strong urge.
A salt tooth is quite unlike a sweet tooth. It doesn't create an appetite for itself at the hormone level. But salt does make our taste buds (味蕾) get used to it. so that the more you eat, the more you need to get the same salty hit. This is why chefs can get heavy-handed with it.
As Sam Bloom, a nutritional therapist, explains, “What is generally more concerning is the fat that is used together with salt, like salty crisps, fries and fast food. Ready meals are often the worst for hidden salts. Anything that adds flavor that isn't a spice or herb will probably have salt added to it and can make you want to eat more because it tastes good. The salt and fat combination in these foods is what causes problems with cholesterol (胆固醇) . The salt that people add to a meal is much less concerning.”
Nutritionists' suggestion is convincing: When the desire for salt hits, avoid going straight for salty snack foods such as crisps and instead ensure you are well hydrated (containing water) . Seek out whole foods, such as olives and leafy greens. These foods will help you alleviate the desire for salt, which may often be due to a desire for nutrient-rich food.
28. What does the underlined word “rigorously” in paragraph I mean
A. Generally. B. Strictly. C. Largely. D. Pleasantly.
29. Why is salt different from sugar according to paragraph 2?
A. Salt attracts chefs. B. Salt can change hormone level.
C. Salt gets people adapted. D. Salt generates a special appetite.
30. What is Sam Bloom's attitude towards ready meals
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Approving. D. Ambiguous.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Ways of seeking out whole food. B. Reasons for getting the desire for salt.
C. Attitudes towards seeking for nutrient food. D. Approaches to relieving the eagerness for salt.
D
Losing an eye might be an unthinkable thing, especially for a young woman, but not for Xintong. She chose to become an ocularist (义眼师) who makes prosthetic eyes (义眼) for herself and people in the same situation to help them get back their confidence. Xintong is the name that she gave to herself-which she prefers people to call her instead of her real name—because “xintong” in Chinese sounds like “new pupils”.
Nearly 10 years after losing her right eye in a car accident, 28-year-old Xintong from Beijing transformed the hollow of her eye socket-a “flaw” she used to hide-into a fashion statement. She shared a short video online in which she wears a glowing prosthetic eye. As she waves her hand, the prosthetic eye begins to shine with red light.
With another wave, the light changes to green and then purple and white.
The video soon went viral on social media, with many comments praising her for being “creative”, “beautiful” and “optimistic”. But that wasn't the case 10 years ago.
“The prosthetic eye I wore a that time was torturing me,” Xintong said. “It hurt and gave me a red and swollen eye socket, and it looked so dull and fake. I was young and I wanted to look attractive.”
She took matters into her own hands and began researching prosthetic eyes. Beginning in 2019, she dedicated about two years to mastering the production techniques and skills under the guidance of an ocularist. This journey led her to establish her own prosthetic eye studio, providing personalized services for those requiring them.
She produces prosthetic eyes as if she is creating pieces of artwork. “The position, direction, and even stroke thickness of the blood streaks on the prosthetic eyeballs matter,” the ocularist said. Sometimes she also paints special patterns according to customers' needs: twinkling stars, cartoon characters like Cardcaptor Sakura and effects like colored contact lenses.
Now when Xintong hears her customers say words such as “Finally, I can accept myself” or “Now I feel free to take selfies”, she feels deeply moved.
32. Why did Xintong give the name “Xintong” to herself
A. To start a brand new life. B. To forget her real name.
C. To look like new pupils. D. To attract more people.
33. Why did the video gain much popularity on social media
A. The prosthetic eyes had various colors.
B. She cured her hollow by waving her hand.
C. Many comments praised her for her beauty.
D. She changed a “flaw” into a fashionable state.
34. What can we learn about Xintong from paragraph 5
A. She failed to set up her own prosthetic eye studio.
B. She began researching prosthetic eyes on her own.
C. She was able to offer some specific services on prosthetic eyes.
D. She paid no attention to grasping the production techniques and skills.
35. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Xintong is a woman with determination and creativity.
B. Becoming an ocularist helped Xintong gain much profit.
C. Xintong lost all her hopes in her life after the car accident.
D. Many customers are deeply moved by Xintong's artworks.

In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John's only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breathtaking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died.
Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John, really didn't want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can't aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John's dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. He never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn't have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes (钞票) , saying, "This is for your lunch at school next four days. "He worked up the courage hoping to ask his mother if she could give him some more money so that he could participate in the competition, but finally, considering the family's financial difficulties, he swallowed (掩饰, 抑) the words.

【读后续写】One possible version:
Looking at the notes on the desk the next day, John was lost in thought. “Should I use the money for the competition”, he asked himself, balancing his passion for painting against his lunches to be lost. Love for art beating the other, he bought paints and brushes with some of the notes, and dashed to sign up for it, after which he put his heart and soul into finishing painting. After handing it in, he went home, his dancing heart ready to jump from his body. Weeks later, to his great surprise, a call came announcing that he had won the first place and he was invited to give a speech at the award ceremony.
At the award ceremony John was about to speak when he saw his mother. Wild excitement took hold of him, but he calmed down and began his speech, in which he expressed appreciation for the golden opportunity to show his love for painting and share the joy. After a short pause, he said emotionally, “Above all, I should be grateful to the greatest woman in my mind—my beloved e on stage, dear mum!” Then his mother went forward, with thunderous applause and cheers almost shooting through the roof. Excited tears streaming down her cheeks, she hugged her son tightly, saying she had known all and would support his passion with all nergy and strength.
