I don't think I can recall a time when I wasn't aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune to have the sea at my side. The first time I went to Half Moon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only one percent of Australia's Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than those of any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world's reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it's important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take action. I've become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean's species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will motivate people to be a part of the movement. Angus also shared many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of underwater marine species.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the underlined part in Paragraph 1
A. He seldom went surfing at the sea. B. He never went back to his hometown.
C. He forgot his experiences about the ocean. D. He had a wonderful impression of Half Moon Bay.
25. What can we learn about Australian marine life according to paragraph 2
A. It may be faced with danger. B. It relies on reefs for living greatly.
C. It is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually. D. It is protected better than that in other oceans.
26. What is the Protect Our Coral Sea activity intended to do
A. It is intended to contribute to a complete ecosystem.
B. It is intended to set up a large nature reserve for reefs.
C. It is intended to raise more teenagers' environmental awareness.
D. It is intended to prevent more marine species from being endangered.
27. Why did Angus and the author create a little video
A. To bring back pleasant memories of sea creatures.
B. To inspire more people to protect the marine species.
C. To share their childhood experiences about the ocean.
D. To encourage more people to explore the secret of the ocean.

Last Tuesday, a robotic ship called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) set sail from Plymouth, England. The 15-meter ship will recreate the 1620 crossing of the Atlantic by the original Mayflower, which brought the first European settlers to what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. But unlike the original Mayflower, there are no people on board. Everything about the ship is designed to run automatically. The ship is guided by an artificial intelligence (AI) system called “AI Captain”.
The MAS is a project run by a group called Pro Mare along with IBM, aiming to test different kinds of technologies for collecting information about the sea. The new Mayflower's electric motor is powered by solar energy. The builders of the ship say they hope it can be used in the future to travel and research parts of oceans that are too difficult or dangerous for people to reach. If these can be handled by machines, it could be a big advance in ocean research.
Since the MAS didn't have to carry humans, its designers were free to think about how to make the best ship for the job. Apart from cameras and radar to help the ship guide itself, the ship is carrying different kinds of tools and sensors. It has special listening devices which can detect whales and dolphins and even a special “tongue” that can report back on the chemicals in the seawater.
Last Friday morning, scientists tracking the ship noticed that it was going about half as fast as it should have been going. The AI Captain was working well, but there seemed to be something slowing the motor down. Since the ship had only covered 10% of the way across the Atlantic, the team decided to bring it back to Plymouth so that they could fix the problem and send it out again.
When the MAS finally does put out to sea again, it is expected to take about three weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The fastest speed for the MAS is about 10 miles per hour. That may seem slow, but it's about 5 times faster than the original Mayflower, which took 66 days to make the journey.
28. What might be the ultimate mission of the MAS project
A. Developing new AI captain systems. B. Testing the new robotic ship of IBM.
C. Exploring the ocean with high technologies. D. Travelling across the Atlantic on the Mayflower.
29. What aspect of MAS does the third paragraph tell us
A. Its operating system. B. Its working principle. B. Its functional equipment. D. Its design philosophy.
30. What caused the MAS to turn back during its voyage
A. The AI Captain sent wrong instructions. B. The electric motor got affected by something.
C. The scientists wanted to change the ship's route. D. The ship needed to be serviced on a regular basis.
31. What could be the best title for the text
A. A Robotic Ship's Global Voyage B. New Mayflower Crossing The Atlantic
C. New Mayflower's Failed Mission D. AI Captain System Guiding A Robotic Ship

With office developers competing for space and height—just to make a statement, the age of the iconic office building is upon us. Let's start by exploring what “iconic” actually means.
Google the word “iconic” and the definitions include something that is “famous”, “popular” or representative of “particular opinions or a particular time”. The term can also be applied to something that is representative of something else—for instance, the Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris.
In architecture, an iconic design is usually a design that is “ground breaking” and one that sets new standards in its field. It is a design that other designers and manufacturers follow, as it becomes a bench mark for other similar products. Furthermore, an iconic design is one that stands up to the test of time, remaining a good design, despite the passing of years, decades and even centuries.
Lord Norman Foster has certainly had a say in the rise of these distinctive structures over the past 15 years. His architectural firm Foster & Partners designed the Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe), whose completion in 2001 sparked the birth of London's new skyline, taking over the previous one—Britannic Tower. Lord Foster also led the redesign of Wembley Stadium and the Millennium Bridge—globally recognized structures in their own right.
Unusually shaped structures have been around since the Pyramids, but before computers, architectural designs were hand draw n and, consequently, landmark buildings were much more conventional in their nature. Since then, digital technology has moved forward at such a rate that it has pushed us into a new era of architectural innovation.
Whatever your views on these high-rise developments, they have turned the London skyline into an exciting, ever-changing landscape and, in the process, redefined the concept of an iconic building. But we will still be talking about them a century from now—as we do the Empire State Building — or will another new wave of office blocks simply take their place
32. What is the feature of an iconic architecture
A. It is always changing. B. It needs constant testing.
C. It has pioneering and distinctive designs. D. It follows the standards that were set earlier.
33. What promoted the development of architectural innovation
A. Digital technology. B. Architectural theory.
C. Curiosity about pyramids. D. Accidental moves by talented designers.
34. What does the underlined word “sparked” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Got rid of. B. Brought about. C. Gave way to. D. Conflicted with.
35. What's the author's attitude towards the iconic office buildings in London
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Concerned. D. Pessimistic.

In 1999, journalist Nicholas D. Kristof reported a surprising encounter on a tiny African island. Here, Kristof me t a number of elderly men who told him that they were descendants of Chinese sailors many centuries ago. Their ancestors had traded with local Africans, who had given them giraffes to take back to China. 36
Six centuries ago, a large number of Chinese ships crossed the sea, then travelled west to East Africa. 37 These great expeditions brought a vast web of trading links under Chinese government control.
38 Most of the trading involved spices, wood, and medicines. Zheng He brought them back to the capital. Although these goods were mainly presented to the emperor for his consumption and disposal, foreign ambassadors coming to China were permitted to trade with locals in the capital for handsome profits, which also allowed ordinary Chinese to benefit from international trade.
39 In the regions they visited, Zheng He and his fleet remained a long-lasting theme in popular Southeast Asia folk tales. Two surviving records of the expeditions provide detailed accounts of unique Chinese navigation technologies of the time, leaving Chinese rich maritime legacy (遗产) to later generations.
However, the Chinese expedition never sought to establish colonial (殖民的) rule over these oceans by military force. 40 China's maritime dominance disappeared suddenly in the 1430s because of domestic changes, and the overseas expeditions were eventually ended by the court. All this happened only decades before the occurrence of the great age of European discovery and exploration.
A. Zheng He's great voyage started at the port of Nanjing.
B. Seven times, the treasure fleets set sail for the unknown.
C. Apart from the economic impact, there was more cultural print.
D. The actual economic impact of the expedition was difficult to evaluate.
E. Zheng He exchanged China's products for foreign luxuries and daily products.
F. Instead, it was intended to facilitate international and trade relationships with others.
G. If it's true, this remote village is evidence of an episode of maritime exploration in China.

第三部分 语言运用
第二节 (共10小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Sometimes, nature has a way of throwing the unexpected at you, even when you thought you have seen everything. If you go to Gansu, China, you'll see such 56 example.
(locate) 57 at the northern foothills of Qilian Mountains, Rainbow Mountains (Zhangye National Geopark) is so called because it contains a sight unique 58 that part of the world. Or to put it another way, hardly can you find one elsewhere in the world, as the impressive mountains, 59 (stand) over 100 meters tall in places, have somehow been covered with spray-paints of different colors.
Zhangye is the nearest city to Rainbow Mountains, and you can either choose a guided tour, or 60 (simple) travel by car to the area, only around a 20-mile drive. You’ll have three areas to choose from—the Linze Danxi a Scenic Area, which makes up the bulk of the park; Binggou, where the formations tend to be like melting ice 61 (sculpture); and Sunan Danxia Scenic Area, which is less crowded than the other two but has fewer fully built roads, so you'd better go there under the 62 (guide) of the local people.
The best time of the year 63 ( visit) is between June and September, when the mild weather should make walking comfortable, and it 64 (recommend) to visit at either sunrise or sunset when the colors are at their most bright and changeable. This iconic attraction is the one 65 stands in awe-inspiring and unforgettable scenes.

“All done!” Stephen placed a bowl by the sink. “Let's swim.” “Swimming ! I just can't get used to it in December,” Martine said. All Stephen had heard since his American cousin, Martine, arrived in Australia were stories about snow and fireplaces.
Suddenly, a loud splash (落水声) came from the backyard, “Mr. Baker’s dog, Max, must be taking a quick swim again.” Stephen rolled his eyes upward. Martine followed Stephen as he went to the pool and stopped, truly shocked. In the water was a round and hairy ball that looked like a wet bear. “A koala bear!” Martine sounded happy as the animal splashed water over his ears. “In fact, you know, he isn't a bear,”Stephen told her,“He's a marsupial (袋类动物), like a kangaroo.”
They sat on the edge of the pool and watched. The koala swam, and then floated on his back until he headed for the opposite side of the pool across from Stephen and Martine. The koala tried to pull himself out, but the po ol wall was too slippy.
“He can't get out,” Martine said, “We've got to help him.” Stephen kicked off his shoes and stepped quietly into the pool. By the time Stephen reached the frightened animal, the koala was moving to the metal ladder. Stephen put his arms under the koala and gave him a push. And Martine lifted the animal onto the solid ground. The koala shook himself before climbing across the grass and up the nearest tree.
“We’ve never seen a koala in the pool before,” Stephen said, “but koalas love to swim.” My teacher said that backyard pools are often the places where koala have accidents in Australia.” “What if he falls in when no one is at home ” Martine asked. “All the koala needs is something rough to hang on to,” Stephen replied, “so that he can pull himself right out.” Hearing what happened, Stephen's mom said, “There is some leftover carpeting in the garage. You can use that.”

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
66. One possible version (94 words):
Dear editor,
Recently our class had a heated discussion on whether the sea is worth exploring. Opinions are mainly divided into two groups.
Some students think sea exploration is not worth it, for it will pollute the sea. People sometimes over-exploit the sea without mercy, worsening the marine ecosystem. However, others are convinced that exploring the sea is beneficial to human beings. To better understand our planet, we must explore the sea. Moreover, abundant in varieties of resources, the sea helps us to solve the problem of energy shortages.
Personally speaking, it's worthwhile to explore the sea for the benefit of future generations. Meanwhile, it should be balanced with environmental protection.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
67. One possible version (164 words):
Stephen and Martine found the carpet and carried it to the pool. Then they found a rope somewhere and tied one end of the rope to the carpet and the other to two poolside grab bars. They cut the carpet so that it extended into the pool and lay against the pool wall. “I hope it works,” said Stephen. The two cousins waited and waited, but the koala was nowhere to be seen. In the following days, the “pool wall koala aid” was almost forgotten, leaving Martine a bit disappointed.
Finally, there came the familiar splash several days later. Hearing that, Stephen and Martine reacted with the same thought.: It could be Mr. Baker's dog or... Outside they rushed. The water shone on the koala's furry head. He swam around for a while, and then headed toward the carpet. Grabbing it with his front feet, he slowly pulled himself up and out of the water. With four feet planted firmly on the ground, he shook himself and ran off. Martine laughed, “I'll never forget this amazing experience and the swimming koala,” she laughed.

M: I wish I had a view of the garden of the hotel, though. There's nothing to see except the cars in the parking garage.
W: You could always change.
M: I guess so, but I can't be bothered. Anyway, it's great to have a big, flat-screen TV. There's also a coffee maker, so I can make coffee whenever I want it. I was a little disappointed that there was nothing —not even a bottle of water—in the refrigerator when I checked in. But I called down and asked them to fill it up, and they did that right away.

M: Wow, I'm really getting fat. I've gained 10 pounds in the last two months.
W: How much do you weigh
M: I think about 170 pounds.
W: Do you exercise regularly
M: Not recently, because I'm meeting a tight deadline.
W: What kind of foods do you eat
M: I usually get take-out or fast food because I don't have enough time to cook.
W: I was reading a diet book the other day. It said that if you eat meat and nothing else, you'll lose weight quickly. One of my friends told me he tried it and lost 20 pounds.
M: That sounds good, but I'm not sure how long I could do that. Well, I think I'm going to try it anyway. Who's the author
W: I can't remember. It's not that popular. When I get home I'll check and give you a call.

W: Hey, Joe! It's good to see you.
M: I haven't seen you for a few days. How's it going
W: Not bad. I'm so busy with the classes I'm taking. How about you
M: I'm okay. My job's really busy this time of year, too. You know, it's the sales season now. My boss requires higher sales. What's new with you
W: Nothing much. I'm on my way to the shopping center. Hey, do you remember Lana She's over there. She's always at the shopping center!
M: Who Oh yeah. I remember Lana. She's the one with the scary-looking dog. I don't want to hang out with that dog!
W: Hal! You aren't afraid of that lovely tiny dog, are you Well, I'm sure Rover isn't there.
M: Actually, I'm headed to the shopping center later, anyway. There's a huge sale going on. I think they're open extra late. If I get there before you leave, maybe I'll see you. I'm not leaving until I have some new shoes!

M: The summer vacation in New Delhi begins in May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month's stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a. m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.
