According to a new research, kids can improve their brainpower by cooking, gardening and cleaning around the house.
It’s a study of 207 children. Scientists have found that housework like making meals and caring for plants had something to do with planning, self-controlling and remembering things.
Collected from children aged 5 to 13 in mid-2020, the results showed 86 percent of kids put their dirty clothes in the right place and cleaned up after playing. But only 59 percent made their own beds, just 26 percent sorted clothes after washing and 10 percent helped cooking.
Older children are more likely to do housework than younger ones. Girls do more housework than boys. For example, only 49 percent of boys but 70 percent of girls made their own beds. Around 60 percent of kids, including 50 percent of boys and 61 percent of girls, helped do the dishes. Only 34 percent of kids aged five to seven did this, but 64 percent of those aged 11 to 13 helped.

In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on December 26th, which is the following day after Christmas Day. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it’s a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.
The exact origin of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages. When great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in exchange for the saying of a mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn’t open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.
One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, and that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.

Some children cannot wait to grow up, because once you become an adult, you are free to make your own decisions. More importantly, you can do all those things that you cannot do now because you are too young. So, the question is, “At what age do you really become an adult ” Well, people become adults at different ages in different places.
In Australia the 18th birthday is a very important event for young Australians because it means they can do almost anything they want. They can vote (选举), learn to drive a car, get married, join the army and even buy their own houses. Even if they can do all these things, most Australians have to wait until their 21st birthday to really celebrate becoming an adult. This is the traditional adult age in Australia, the USA and the UK.
Even though 21 is the traditional adult age in many English-speaking countries, the law nowadays is different in each country. In the UK you can join the army at 16 and even get married at 16 if your parents allow. Young people in the UK can learn to drive a car at 17, although they have to wait until they are 18 to vote.
In China, you can vote and learn to drive a car when you are 18, but if you want to get married, women have to wait until they are 20 and men until they are 22. Chinese people celebrate important birthdays every 10 years — so when young people turn 20, they can expect a big party!
No matter what age you are, becoming an adult is really about learning how to be independent and responsible (负责任的). Once you are finally able to take care of yourselves and make your own decisions, then you can say that you are truly all grown-ups.
21.Some children cannot wait to grow up because _________.
A.they hope to drive a car
B.they can decide to do things freely
C.they want to move out and live alone
D.they can celebrate birthdays
22.The underlined word “adult” means “_________”.
A.grown-up B.kid C.parent D.elder
23.Which is TRUE according to the passage
A.In Australia, people can vote at 16.
B.In China, men can get married at 18.
C.In the UK, people can drive at 17.
D.In the USA, people can get married at 16.
24.What does the last paragraph tell us
A.When people celebrate their 18th birthday, they become adults.
B.When people turn 20, they should take care of themselves.
C.When you can make your own decisions, you become adults.
D.A true grown-up is independent and responsible.
25.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Why some children can’t wait to grow up.
B.People become adults at different ages in different places.
