"They are our guests," Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar said on an extremely cold day as he and his colleagues broke the ice and dropped grain at bird feeding points on the Hokersar wetland in Kashmir.
Dar and his colleagues are hired by the local government to feed the hungry birds as weather conditions in the region became worse. "Since December, temperatures have dropped to—10℃ and there have been two heavy snowfalls, which have blanketed the vast rice fields and fruit farms in the area. Scores of wetlands and lakes, including parts of the famous Dal Lake, have been covered up by thick ice in Kashmir," Dar added.
The cries of hundreds of thousands of birds that visit Kashmir during their winter migration(迁徙)have long been a welcome noise for the locals. They arrive from as far away as eastern Europe, Japan and Turkey to feed and produce babies in the wetlands. Officials say at least 700, 000 birds have moved to Kashmir in the past two months and expect more to arrive as temperatures improve in February.
In recent decades, the number of visiting birds has declined, which experts say is due to climate change and urban development. "Construction around the Hokersar wetland, poisonous waste and the changing climate in the area are robbing the birds of their traditional watering holes and nesting areas," Dar explained.
According to a recent study by the University of Kashmir, the Hokersar wetland shrank(缩小)from nearly 19 square kilometers in 1969 to 12.8 square kilometers today. Fortunately, environmental groups and local residents are also joining hands to feed the hungry birds in the icy conditions.
"It's not just our official duty to feed them but also an order from Nature," Dar told me.
24. What does the second paragraph focus on
A. The icy conditions. B. The lack of snowfalls.
C. The variety of birds. D. The warming climate.
25. Why did fewer and fewer birds visit the Hokersar wetland in winter in the past decades
A. The wetland was damaged. B. The watering holes became very salty.
C. The locals tried to poison them. D. The authorities stopped feeding them.
26. What do the locals most probably think of those birds
A. It is a big waste to feed them. B. They may destroy the crops.
C. It is annoying to hear their noise. D. They are their lovely guests.
27. What does Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar want to tell us in the last paragraph
A. The Hokersar wetland has to be protected.
B. Wildlife groups and locals did a good job.
C. It is absolutely necessary to help those birds.
D. The recent study provides valuable information.
C
"Why do Asians usually steam(清蒸)a fish for the New Year when it can be cooked in various ways " asked Andy Ricker, who ran several famous Thai restaurants in America. "It can be fried or roasted. But if you live on a coast, or have access to first-rate fish, steaming is the best way to go."
Another reason is that, in the right context, fish stand for good luck. The Chinese words for "fish" and "plenty" have the same pronunciation, and a fish, eaten on the eve of the lunar new year, represents a wish for plenty of good things to come. Therefore, enough fish should be cooked to ensure leftovers, which mean hopes for abundance in the year ahead.
Such lucky dishes are not unique to Asians. On New Year's Day in America, black southerners have been eating Hoppin' John, a delicious dish of rice and black-eyed beans(豆), cooked with salted pork or smoked ham(interest in African-American culture has made the recipe popular elsewhere). The beans symbolize coins, and the greens that are usually served as well stand for dollar bills. Some people even put a clean coin in the pot. Whoever gets it on their plate will enjoy a lot of good luck.
Diverse as these dishes are, they all represent hopes for good fortune. Fish, beans and greens are neither costly nor extraordinary, suggesting that luck is not something bought expensively or sought with difficulty. Good fortune, they suggest, lies all around, and is always within reach.
Whether anyone actually believes in the relationship between eating these foods and receiving the promised benefits is unclear. Mainly, these food traditions continue for the same reason that other traditions do: People have fond memories of celebrating them with their parents, and want to pass them down to their own children.
28. What does the underlined word "abundance” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Delicious meals. B. Food left at the end of a meal.
C. A lot of good things. D. General situation related to an event.
29. What can we learn about Hoppin' John
A. It is a kind of vegetable. B. It is a piece of delicious meat
C. It is a unique lucky name D. It is an African-American dish.
30. Which of the following can best describe the lucky dishes
A. Ordinary. B. Expensive. C. Rare. D. Fresh.
31. Why do most people follow the tradition according to the author
A. Their parents told them to do so.
B. Their children want to carry them on.
C. They value the experience behind the food.
D. They truly believe in the food-for-luck stories.
D
Pindar Van Arman is a painter, but he's also a software designer. He has built some machines and worked on a DARPA challenge team in California to build a self-driving car. His latest project A robot painter, BitPaintr.
BitPaintr is Van Arman's fifth robot in 10 years. Earlier versions included devices that produced simpler paintings with algorithms(算法). But the idea for BitPaintr is simple: A user just uploads a picture, and it can paint totally on its own and develop its own style.
Although his friends joke that he has invented a really expensive, slow, bad painter, Van Arman says teaching a machine how to be creative has helped him get to the bottom of what creativity is—and appreciate it.
"When you're trying to teach a machine to do something that's easy for humans, it really makes you sit back and see what humans are doing," he says.
So what is creativity, then, if a robot with a paintbrush can be-or appear to be-just as creative as a human with a paintbrush
Mark Riedl, a professor at the Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing, says it depends on how you define creativity. "There is creativity and Creativity," Riedl says. "Being ‘creative’ usually has something to do with the little things that we do hundreds of times in our daily lives. They could be creative, but usually aren't. To be 'Creative' is to have an imagination that will have a huge impact on a social level—the Picassos and the Mozarts of the world; the people who have produced something that's taken on this additional level of meaning."
Riedl admits what robots create is far from human-level quality art, but he sees robots entering the creative process as a positive thing.
"We want the computers to keep up with us," he says. "And thanks to researchers like Van Arman, it seems like they will, although they will not replace us, but to help us to be more creative."
32. Which is a new quality of BitPaintr
A. Simplicity. B. Creativity. C. Speed. D. Profitability.
33. What is Van Arman's friends' attitude to BitPaintr
A. Favorable B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Hopeful.
34. What does Mark Riedl suggest about computers
A. They will defeat the greatest artists soon.
B. They can produce "Creative” things by themselves.
C. They will learn more from the Picassos and the Mozarts.
D. They can help us to do daily things in more “creative” ways.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Can BitPaintr-like Robots Replace Artists in the Future
B. Why Do People Have Sharply Different Views on AI Robots
C. What Is the Difference Between the Two Kinds of Creativity
D. Can BitPaintr Be Considered a "Creative” Painting Software

"We now have DNA evidence that close contact existed between the first emperor's China and the west before the formal opening of the Silk Road. This is far 59 (early)than we formerly thought," says Li Xiuzhen, a researcher at a museum in Xi'an. "The theory that the Chinese were interacting with Greeks or at least Greek culture at such 60 early date is not unbelievable.
"Although the Silk Road between China and Europe was 61 (official)established in the 3rd century AD, Romans were already wearing Chinese silk even during the rule of the First Emperor of Rome," says Lukas Nickel, chair of Asian Art History at the University of Vienna. "I can even imagine the Chinese artists see some 62 (example)of Greek art, which made its way into Asia after Alexander the Great, 63 army in the 4th century BC fought all the way to present-day India. "Tomorrow is Mother's Day. I've been saving up for the past month and I'm going to buy my mother a lipstick she loves,” Cherry, my friend, said on the way home from school. "See you tomorrow!”
We waved goodbye as she went into a gift shop. But her excitement reminded me that I hadn't prepared anything special for my mother yet. I continued walking along the road, carefully thinking about what gift I should choose. I had planned to buy her some flowers and chocolates. Now, compared with my friend's lipstick, they seemed to be too simple.
"Maybe I should go to the gift shop, too." I told myself.
I pushed open the door to a nearby shop and tried to find a perfect gift. I picked up a lipstick but immediately put it back after seeing its price. I could never afford that! Then I walked into another shop and saw a very lovely cup.
“It'd be a wonderful gift and Mum would love it!” I thought.
I picked it up and turned it over to see the price, hoping it was not too expensive. Once again, I couldn't afford it. Feeling sad, I continued to wander around the shops until darkness fell outside. Eventually, I gave up and went home. When I opened the door, I was greeted by the good smell from the kitchen.
"Mum, I am home!” I pretended to be cheerful.
Mom turned around and kissed me lightly on the cheeks, saying, "Dinner is almost ready. Today, I happened to be able to come home a little bit earlier. I have made some of the snacks you loved when you were a kid. I really missed the happy time we spent together!"

One possible version:
A Weekend Outing
Last Sunday, our club organized an extraordinary visit to a park that was about 4 kilometers away from our school.
Bathed in the warm sunshine, we managed to reach our destination on foot. Along the way, we stopped here and there to enjoy the pretty flowers on the roadsides and play. What excited us most was our performances in the park, which made everybody burst into laughter.
The activity has drawn more than 40 students from different classes and all of them said it has not only offered them relaxation, but also helped them to understand our club better.
第二节
One possible version:
Just then and there, I had a good idea. Since there was no time or money for me to buy a gift, I decided to write a letter to express my love to my mother. Having finished the letter, I ran through the album and selected a picture in which Mum and I were having a picnic in a park. After the clock on my bedroom wall struck 11 pm, I went out to the sitting room and put the letter on the table, hoping that she would see it in the morning.
Early in the morning, I was woken up by the gentle knocks on my door. I jumped out of bed and opened the door. There stood my mother, holding tightly to her chest the letter and the picture. Even in the darkness, I still could feel her excitement. "I love the letter and the picture! It is the best gift I have ever received!" my mother said. "The picture has reminded me the happy moments we spent together! Thank you, my sweetheart!"
