(2024·浙江杭州·二模)One day several years ago, Valorie Salimpoor took a drive that changed her life. Salimpoor, a neuroscience graduate, was trying to decide on her future job. She felt that a drive might help clear her head. When she turned on the car radio, a piece of violin music came on: Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.5. “Something just happened,” she recalls. “I just felt this feeling… It was so strong.” She stopped the car so she could focus on the music. She wondered why it had such a powerful influence on her.
Salimpoor found a job working as a neuroscientist. Her research included scanning (扫描) people’s brain activity as they listened to music. She discovered that when people listen to the music they like, their brains filled with dopamine (多巴胺)—a chemical connected with pleasure and encouragement. In one experiment, people listened to the first 30 seconds of unfamiliar songs. The listeners were then given the choices of buying the full songs, using their own money. By studying dopamine-related areas of the people’s brains, Salimpoor was able to successfully predict which songs the people would choose to buy. She could tell what they liked and what they didn’t based on brain activity.
But why might one person like a song while another person doesn’t Salimpoor says it all depends on past musical experiences. “Eastern, Western, jazz, heavy metal, pop—all of these have different rules they follow,” she says. These rules are recorded as patterns, or templates (模板), in the brain. If the new music has a familiar (熟悉的) template, your brain lets out dopamine and brings a feeling of pleasure. This might explain why most people have a preference for a certain type of music.
There are questions Salimpoor is still trying to answer: How does our brain make musical templates Why do people with similar backgrounds have different preferences Her research, though, has given her a new way to think about her experience years ago. “That day,” she says, “it all seemed like such a big mystery.” Now when she hears a piece of music she likes, she has a better understanding of what’s happening inside her brain.

(2024·浙江温州·二模)At the age of 19, I graduated from high school and moved to a place where it snowed often. I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life there until I knew I had bacterial meningitis (细菌性脑膜炎).
When my parents wheeled me out of the hospital, I felt like I had been pieced back together like a doll with my “new legs”. They hurt so badly that all I could think was what I could do with these things. Tears streamed down my face. I was completely emotionally (情绪上) broken.
But I knew I had to let go of the old Amy and learn to welcome the new Amy. Four months later I was back up on a snowboard, although things didn’t go quite as expected: My legs went flying down the mountain, and I was on top of the mountain still. I was so discouraged. But I knew that if I could find the right pair of legs, I would be able to do this again. And this is when I learned that difficulties we met would bring two kinds of results: stop us on the road or ▲ .
I did a year of research, but still couldn’t find out what kind of legs to use, so I decided to make a pair myself. It was these legs and the best 21st birthday gift I could ever receive—a new kidney (肾) from my dad—that allowed me to follow my dreams again. I started snowboarding, then I went back to work.
In 2005, I founded an organization for youth and young adults with physical disabilities so they could join in sports. From there, I had the opportunity to go to South Africa, where I helped to put shoes on thousands of children’s feet so they could attend school. With my effort, I got three World Cup gold medals which made me the highest ranked female snowboarder in the world.
Twenty-six years ago, when I lost my legs, I had no idea what to expect. But my legs haven’t disabled me. They’ve forced me to depend on my imagination and to believe in the possibilities, because in my mind, we can do anything and we can be anything!

(2024·浙江湖州·三模)①Life seems long when we’re looking ahead, and so short when we’re looking back. That’s especially true for a mother. I taught my children how to walk and talk. Then one day, I turned around, and they were grown and on their own. I found myself wishing I could get them back. Imagine my surprise to find that grown children can be as much fun as little ones. Here are two examples:
②One January, when my father-in-law died, I called my younger son Nate to say I’d drive up to Yosemite, and we’d drive out the next day to attend the funeral. It was snowing when I pulled into the park. The next morning, Nate and I left early, only to get stuck in the snow. We sat for five hours in a blizzard (暴风雪) waiting for the road to be cleared. Meanwhile, Nate pleased me with knock-knock jokes and other things he had learned in Yosemite. I will never forget it.
③A few years later, I flew to New York to visit my elder son Josh. That night, Josh began having pain in his right side. We took a taxi to a hospital, where he was admitted for an operation. When the operation was done, I stayed for a week to take care of him. We watched movies and ate delicious food. I will never forget it.
④Grown children will always need a mother, not to tell them what to do or how to do it, but to listen when they need to talk. At the same time, we’ll always need our grown-up children to make us laugh and keep us young and fill that place in our heart that only they can fill.

(2024·浙江杭州·二模)①As a grandma, who played on the Banff girls’ ice hockey (冰球) team 50 years ago, I finally worked up the courage to play the sport with my 8-year-old grandson and his dad.
②“Grandma scored,” my grandson shouted.
③“Of course she did.” my son-in-law said. “She was on a hockey team a really long time ago.”
④My heart melted.
⑤Memories of playing hockey as a teenager began to flood my mind. In the mid-1970s, two brave Banff High School teachers started our girls’ hockey team. We had many difficulties to overcome before our first game: learning the rules, skating on the ice as fast as we could and passing, and mastering more skills.
⑥Our first real game was against a team from Jasper. They skated fast. They passed and zipped up and down the ice like superstars. And then our captain got pushed into the boards hard.
⑦I stood there with my mouth open. My teammates wore similar expressions, and our coach speechless. Then, as I was making a pass to a teammate, I got a hit. I got up on my knees and gasped (喘气) for air. That hurt. A lot.
⑧“It’s a long way from your heart,” our coach shouted. “Get up.” Those were the exact words I needed to hear to stop the tears and get back in the game.
⑨We lost 13-0. We should have been sad about it but we weren’t. We were so thankful that we could all still walk to the dressing room. A month later we played with Jasper again. Today was Holi, the festival of colors! The day kicked off with Mom’s mouth-watering gujiyas, those sweet, deep-fried Indian dumplings. The smell itself was a joyful wake-up call.
At 8 a. m., I put on my old clothes because I knew they would get all colorful. I said “Happy Holi” to everyone, and they applied (涂抹) bright colors on my cheeks. I looked like a rainbow!
By 10 a. m., there had already been so many kids in the neighborhood park. We had water guns and balloons filled with water and colored powders (粉末). We ran around and sprayed or threw the colored water at each other. I got totally wet and colorful, and so did everyone else.
At noon, we were all super hungry after playing so much. We returned home. Mom had prepared a special Holi lunch. We had puris (small, round, flat pieces of bread), thandai (a milk-based sweet drink) and sweets. I ate so much. It was like a food festival!
As the clock struck 2 p. m., it was time for our next adventure — visiting friends’ homes. There, we exchanged sweets and colors. I even met some new friends in the neighborhood.
At 4 p. m., our local temple held a big Holi celebration. People played the drums and we danced to the music. Everyone was dancing and laughing together. It felt like a Bollywood (宝莱坞) movie come to life.
At 6 p. m., it started getting dark. We lit a bonfire called “Holika Dahan”. It was to remember a special story about Holi. We threw colored powder into the fire and watched it burn. It was like magic.

(2024·浙江嘉兴·二模)Born and grown up in Africa, I first learned about China through famous Kungfu movies. And when I was in college, I was lucky to get a chance to visit the famous Shaolin Temple in Henan Province.
At the time, I didn’t realize that besides the long-expected Kungfu, thousands of surprises were waiting for me in China. To begin with, I was not prepared for the weather. It was a difficult change from hot summer in Africa to cold winter in China. The language was a huge problem for me as well. Getting used to Chinese food also seemed impossible then, but now I’m a great fan of the food here.
