(2023·河北省重点高中高一下期中联考)The royal family gathered at Windsor Castle(温莎城堡) for first Easter Sunday service of Charles’s reign on April 9th, 2023. Attendees(参加者) and members of the royal family wore a variety of stylish hats throughout the ceremony. It is a requirement for all women to wear hats on royal occasions. This rule dates back to the 1950s when the upper class and royal women would rarely show their hair in public.
Hats were originally worn for practical reasons such as protection from the sun, rain or cold weather, but quickly people wore them for other purposes. The top hat(高顶礼帽), for example, was reserved for upper-class menand was worn at formal events such as weddings and horse races. Women also used top hats to show social status(地位), wealth and fashion. The larger the hat was, the wealthier the wearer was believed to be.
In addition to status, hats played an important role in British social etiquette. Men were expected to remove their hats indoors, especially in formal settings, to show respect. Women, on the other hand, were to wear their hats until seated for dinner, but then they were expected to remove them.
But hats were not always a symbol of status and etiquette. The bowler hat, created in 1849, was worn by the working class, especially those involved in transportation. The bowler hat became an iconic item of British fashion, worn by both men and women.
Today, hats continue to be a very important part of British culture, with many old and new hat shops throughout the country. The fedora is also making a comeback among younger generations. When Marissa Dates first tried to make her grandmother’s brisket(牛胸肉), things did not go exactly as planned. It was her senior year of college in Michigan, and Dates was living with six of her good friends. They all were spending Rosh Hashanah away from home for the first time, so they wanted to celebrate the Jewish New Year together.
The plan was for everyone to make one thing for the big meal and then the group would come together to make brisket—the main dish of many Jewish holidays.
“Obviously, all of our grandmothers have a brisket recipe(食谱), but they really aren’t all that different,” Dates said. All seven housemates reached out to the grandmothers for their recipes. “We were going to pick the one that we thought was the best, but they resembled each other, so we decided: OK, we would just combine(结合) them,” she said.
The brisket turned out great, but then the grandmothers wanted to see pictures of the final product.
“Of course, we sent them all pictures and they all said, ‘That’s not my brisket. I don’t know what you did. It looks wrong,’” Dates said, laughing. “We thought we just managed to anger seven Jewish grandmothers in one text message.”
Dates now lives in Hermosa Beach, California. Food continues to connect her with relatives who don’t live nearby. She said making brisket helped her stay connected to family in Chicago. “Whenever I’m feeling really homesick, it’s easy to run out and buy a piece of brisket. You stick it in the oven(烤箱) for six hours and you have something that reminds you so much of home,” Dates said. “Making brisket also reminds me of my connection with the larger Jewish community.”

(2023·浙江省杭州市六县九校联盟高一下期中联考)The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. People in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary to understand a person’s needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai people do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish people may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, people in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly for the elderly or a person in authority.
Nurses and other caregivers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治疗) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own or other cultures.
