It was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible(看不见的), thus, given the unfortunate nickname “the toilet bowl”. Now the Philippines’ Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few years ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people.

The clean-up started on January 27, 2019, when 5,000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons(吨) of garbage, marking the beginning of a nationwide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.

During the first week of December, 2018, Brooklyn-based Bounties Network collected 3 tons of garbage from Manila Bay over two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with a digital currency(数字货币) based on the Ethereum system.
For most non-bank-using Filipino fisher-men, this was a firstever experience with a digital currency. It’s one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity’s waste.

There are signs that this recycling-fordigital-payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver-based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a city in southern Luzon, the country’s largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system.

That these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country’s contribution to ocean waste. The Wall Street Journal in 2015 revealed that the Philippines made the third largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.

(2023·辽宁省抚顺市六校协作体高二下期中联考)Long pieces from the outer shell of the coconut(椰子), known as coir(椰子壳粗纤维), are often used with other materials to build barriers. The barriers are used to protect beaches from getting washed away by the force of waves. The coconut material is widely available and costs a lot less than barriers made of other materials, such as wood, steel or concrete. And it is designed to biodegrade(生物降解) or break down, over time.
Some projects create “living shorelines” made of natural elements rather than hard materials. One is being built along part of an eroded(被侵蚀的) riverbank in Neptune, New Jersey. The effort has already greatly improved areas that suffered major erosion damage. “We’re always trying to reduce wave energy while protecting the shoreline,” said Tim Dillingham, the group’s executive director. “And whenever we can, we like to employ nature-based solutions.”

Another project is happening in Boston. That is where Julia Hopkins, an assistant professor at Northeastern University, is using coir, wood chips and other materials to create floating barriers to slow the force of waves. Hopkins is pleased with the results. She says the coconut material is not costly and is actually being recycled rather than being thrown away.

Two projects in East Providence, Rhode Island, used the coconut material in 2020. The next year, 731 meters of the damaged shoreline in New York’s Jamaica Bay were treated through a project that also included the coconut material. Similar projects have been carried out in the states of Delaware and Texas.

The method doesn’t always work, however. In 2016, the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown, Massachusetts, built barriers around a salt marsh that had eroded in the past. While the effort did help reduce erosion for a while, the material did not last long because of strong waves.
Suzan Bellincampi is the sanctuary’s director. “The project is really interesting in terms of what we want to do and how we adapt it,” she said. “It’s not for every site. It works in some places; it doesn’t work in all places.”

(2023·河南省新乡市高二下期中统考)Enric Sala was a professor who worked on ocean research. However, bored with writing death records of ocean species, he quit his job in 2007. Instead of spending any more of his life recording the deaths, Sala decided to try to protect the living creatures in the few remaining areas of the ocean.

These areas are the last wild places of the sea still undamaged by overfishing, pollution and climate change. “It is necessary for us to go to places that still look like the ocean as it was 500 years ago,” Sala says. “These areas, like Palau, are the examples of sustainable(可持续的) development. Maybe we can’t bring all of the ocean back to this state, but these places show us what the potential is.” Beneath the surface of a stormy sea off Palau in the western Pacific live various lively corals. The tiny island nation has protected 80 percent of its waters as a no-fishing area—the largest percentage of the protected ocean area in the world. The remaining 20 percent can be fished only by Palauans.

To protect these places, Sala and the National Geographic Society started a project on ocean protection in 2008. Over the past years, the project has helped create 26 ocean reserves. These make up two-thirds of the world’s fully protected ocean areas. Now Sala and his team have set an even bigger goal—to protect more than a third of the world’s oceans for the purpose not only of keeping biodiversity but also of replenishing fish stocks and storing carbon.

For Sala, one of the most satisfying aspects of his job is working with local communities in the places he and his team are seeking to protect. The team worked closely with about 50 local people on the island. “We showed them an underwater world they had never seen,” Sala recalls. “Huge schools of fish will surely swim in some of the clearest waters ever measured in the Pacific.”
