(2023·江苏省姜堰中学高一下期中考试)A study says the Amazon rainforest is nearing a tipping point(临界点) in its decline where we may see the biologically rich and diverse ecosystem turn into a savannah(稀树草原).

“The Amazon is losing its ability to recover from disturbance like droughts, logging and fires. Deforestation and climate change are the most likely drivers of this decline,” the study co-author Niklas Boers said in a statement. The researchers say they’ve found evidence of this decline across 75 percent of the Amazon.
“It’s worth reminding ourselves that if it gets to that tipping point and we lose the Amazon rainforest, we will get significant feedback on global climate change,” said Timothy Lenton, a scientist and co-author of the study.

The research team looked at three decades’ worth of satellite data, paying close attention to trees and other plants after extreme events. The researchers concluded that the forest, which is essential for oxygen production and carbon sequestration(碳封存), had been losing its resilience for the last two decades.

The researchers say the forest is nearing a tipping point, but the arrival date is unclear as a number of factors can push it closer to or farther from that edge. It’s just too challenging to predict when the change may occur. But the scientists warn that once the tipping point has been crossed, the change could happen quickly.

The news comes after the Amazon reached record levels of deforestation in Brazil in January. Animal husbandry(畜牧业) is causing deforestation in the Amazon, as Brazil is now the world’s top beef exporter. Last November, the EU took steps to ban beef linked to deforestation. “What we propose is a pioneering initiative,” Virginijus Sinkevicˇius, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, said. “The EU action alone will not solve the problem. We also need major markets like the US to clean up their supply chain.”

(2023·山东省德州市高一下期末统考)In a photo, a male red siskin bird is resting on a branch in Vargas, Venezuela. The bird is called “Little Cardinal” by the locals and appears on the money of Venezuela, on products and even in school books. But the small songbirds are disappearing from the wild.

Millions of birds once flourished in the wild in Venezuela, but there are now only hundreds of them. The male siskin is valued for its red feathers and black head. Hunters, even the local farmers, often catch and sell the birds for money. Protection under Venezuelan law has not stopped hunters from catching the birds to sell on the illegal international market. Meanwhile, more and more forests are being cut down to plant cash crops.

The threat has drawn attention from an international team. The team includes scientists from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and coffee farmers in Venezuela’s mountains. They hope to save the birds. An effective plan has been made to have farmers plant organic coffee plants. Such coffee plants are covered with branches which make good nesting places for the birds.

Planting organic coffee crops with branches stops farmers from increasing production by thinning their coffee crops to let more sunlight onto their fields. Farmers who meet the project’s rules will win the right to sell their beans with “Bird Friendly” labels. They will be able to set prices for such “high quality” products that can be five times higher than legal prices set by the government.

At the same time, a red siskin breeding center is being built at a private zoo in Venezuela. Red siskin birds from the center will be placed in the coffee forests. These efforts could prevent the birds from disappearing.
The efforts have already shown positive results. About 40 farmers in the mountains of Carayaca, northwest of the capital Caracas, have stopped cutting down trees—a move that will help the siskin birds to get away from the dangerous situation.

( B )1. What do we know about the siskin bird from Paragraph 1
A. Its benefits for local education.
B. Its popularity.
C. Its beautiful gesture on the branch.
D. Its great value for the environment.
B

( B )2. What caused the drop in the number of the birds
A. Lack of laws from the government.
B. Illegal trade for making high profits.
C. Being hunted for the delicious meat.
D. Planting cash crops for enough food.
B

( D )3. Why does the team have farmers plant organic coffee plants
A. To let more sunlight onto the farmers’ fields.
B. To improve the quality of the cash crops.
C. To offer branches to the breeding center.
D. To provide enough nesting places for the birds.
D

( D )4. What is the text mainly about
A. The value of the endangered red siskin birds.
B. The reasons for the red siskin birds’ disappearance.
C. The profits the farmers get from coffee plants.
D. The efforts made by the team to save the red siskin birds.
D

One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle. Afraid of it being crashed by cars, I pulled over, ran across the road and pulled the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.

I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it up by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr.Sue, its executive and medical director.

Dr.Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is not only home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but also one of the vastest road networks of the country.

“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr.Sue said.
Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities(设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team get to work on injuries, and help their patient.
