(2023·江苏省响水中学高一下期中考试)Seismometer(地震仪) stations sense not only ground shaking due to earthquakes but also signals emitted from the surface of our planet, such as storms and—as the researchers discovered—floods. For this research, scientists turned a seismometer station near the town of Ahrweiler in Germany into a flood detection and tracking tool. Using seismological information from the time of the event, they could tell people about the disaster in a timely manner.
一
二
As the town of Ahrweiler took the full force of a flood, scientists found the seismometer exactly showed the track of the flood for one hour. By combining mathematical models, the researchers were able to estimate(估算) the speed at which the flood moved. In fact, this was the only systematic source of measurable information about how the flood developed because the three present water level stations in the town were out of service early on.
一
二
As the research shows, this method can provide information that is valuable in tracking the flood for warning and rescue activities. “If the data from that station is available and analysed as our research now shows, real-time information on the magnitude and speed of the flood will be available as well,” says Dr Michael Dietze at the University of G ttingen. “As 10% of Europe’s surface area is likely to suffer from rapid flooding by rivers, we may want to start thinking about new ways of flood early warning. The present network of water level stations is not enough to be fully prepared for future events,” Dietze adds.
一
二
Dietze and his colleagues are working on a plan to discover further areas at risk of flooding and provide them with low-cost “watchtower” seismometer pairs—an effort to cut the losses caused by future floods. Dietze says, “The deadly July flood that hit the Ahrweiler in Germany in July 2021 gave a warning to the locals, the government, emergency services and scientists—there is much we need to learn to improve the present flood warning systems.”

(2023·江苏省徐州市高一下期中统考)Earthquake forecasting is one of the most ancient skills known to mankind. From ancient Greece to the present day, countless scientists have tried to develop tools to predict earthquakes. Their attempts usually focused on searching for reliable evidence of coming earthquakes.

However, there are many reasons why predicting earthquakes is so hard. “We don’t understand any basic physics of earthquakes,” said Egill, a research professor at the California Institute of Technology. Scientists have also attempted to create mathematical models of movement, but precise predictions would require great mapping and analysis of the Earth’s crust. Other challenges include a lack of data on the early warning signs, given that these warning signs are not yet entirely understood. Actually, real earthquake prediction is very similar to the diagnosis of potential human illnesses based on observing and analyzing each patient’s signs and symptoms. As it turns out, earthquake prediction is extremely difficult.

Many sources show that earthquake forecasting was a recognized science in ancient Greece. Ancient Greeks lived very close to nature and were able to detect unusual phenomena and forecast earthquakes. The first known forecast was made by Pherecydes of Syros about 2,500 years ago: he made it as he scooped water from a well and noticed that usually very clean water had suddenly become muddy. Indeed, an earthquake occurred two days later, making Pherecydes famous. Nowadays, remote-sensing methods are considered to have the greatest potential in terms of solving the earthquake prediction problem.

Currently, Terra Seismic can identify a forthcoming earthquake with a high level of confidence. Generally, Terra Seismic does not predict an earthquake if the earthquake’s epicenter is located beyond a depth of 40 km. Fortunately, such earthquakes are almost always harmless, since the earthquake’s energy reduces before reaching the Earth’s surface. “Scientists have tried every possible method to try to predict earthquakes,” Bruneau said. “Nobody has been able to crack it and make a believable prediction.”

(2023·广东省深圳市高一下期末统考)Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to the idea that they have a “sixth sense” for disasters, according to experts.

Sri Lanka officials said the waves that killed tens of thousands of people seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a hare. I think animals can sense disasters. They have a ‘sixth sense’. They know when things are happening,” H.D. Ratnayake, Deputy Director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department, said.

The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, home to hundreds of wild elephants. “There has been a lot of evidence(证据) for dogs’ barking or birds’ migrating(迁徙) before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved,” said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. “There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting,” he said. Other authorities agreed with this conclusion.

“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain signs, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators. The idea of an animal’s “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence of Sri Lanka’s damaged coast is likely to add to.
