(2023·江苏省南京市高一下期中统考)Technoference(科技入侵) is defined as everyday interruptions(打扰) in face-to-face interactions because of technological devices. According to studies, parents use technological devices for nine hours per day on average. Smartphones are often used during family activities such as meals, playtime and bedtime—all important times involved in shaping a child’s emotional well-being. When parents are focusing on their devices, they have fewer conversations with their children, and pay less attention to them.
一
二
In one study, 172 two-parent families with a child aged 5 or younger answered online questionnaires about family relationships. Participants showed how often different devices interrupted their activities with their children.
Parents rated their children’s behavior, such as how often they got upset or how easily their feelings were hurt. The parents also reported on their own levels of stress and depression(沮丧), the support they received from their partners, and their children’s screen media use.
一
二
In almost all cases, devices were part of parent-child interactions during the day. Technology may serve as a refuge for parents who have to deal with a child’s bad behavior. However, it has its drawbacks.
The use of electronic devices means parents can’t offer meaningful emotional support or positive feedback to their child, which causes a child’s bad behavior such as crying. This adds to parents’ stress levels. Parents are likely to spend more time on their technological devices, and the cycle continues.
一
二
“These results show that technoference occurring among parents and the child’s behavior influence each other over time,” said McDaniel. “Parents who have children with behavioral problems become more stressed, which may lead to them using technology more, which in turn may contribute to more problems for their children.”
So, it seems that the best solution to a difficult relationship between parents and their children would be simply spending more time with each other, and less time on their smartphones or computers.

(2023·江苏省盐城市高一下期中统考)Recently, I talked with a friend of mine about a mutual friend of ours. “I wish I could be like Jenny. She always seems so happy. I’m not joking. I honestly think she has the perfect life,” said my friend.

If you were to look at the Instagram account of Jenny, you would indeed see what the perfect life is like. However, despite the enviable content of her Instagram, I learned through a conversation with this girl that it was all carefully handled. Everything was put together to maintain the public image that she was a happy-go-lucky sort of person. When she was sad or upset, there was no indication of these emotions on her Instagram.

In fact, we all choose our online media presence. Look through your Instagram—I bet that you don’t post pictures where you don’t look attractive. On Instagram, we always show our good side. Think about it. Would you rather post “I tried so hard but I ended up failing my test.” or “I treated myself to a hot coffee after studying hard all week.”

We all want to present the best parts of our lives to show what’s going well and what we’re proud of. We take photos of the nice things we own or some events considered special, such as formal parties. We post photos of the good times rather than the bad times. No matter what happens, we try to make our online image perfect.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making your online presence perfect—everyone does it in one way or another. However, when it comes to feeling envious of someone else’s Instagram posts, remember that just like you, they’re showing their good side.

(2023·江苏省海安高级中学高一下期中考试)The power of modern electronic media—the net, mobile phones and video games—to capture the attention of the human mind, particularly the young mind, and then distract it, has become a subject of concern. We are, say the worriers, losing the ability to apply ourselves properly to a single task, like reading a book in its entirety or mastering a piece of music on an instrument, with the result that our thinking is becoming shallower.

Nicholas Carr, the American writer, has explored this theme for his book The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, in which he argues that new media are not just changing our habits but our brains. It turns out that the mature human brain is not an immutable seat of personality and intellect but a changeable thing, subject to “neuroplasticity(神经可塑性)”. When our activities alter, so does the architecture of our brain. “I’m not thinking in the way I used to think,” writes Carr. “I feel it most strongly when I’m reading.” He suspects that years of the Internet use have dented his ability to read deeply to absorb himself in books. He describes getting fidgety when faced with a long text. “When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning.”

Carr cites research by Gary Small, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, who concluded that constant exposure to modern media strengthens new neural pathways while weakening older ones. “Just using the Internet for five hours is enough to awaken previously dormant parts of the brain’s prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮层),” concluded Small. For Carr, this is proof that the net can rewire the mind. He sees dangers. Deep thought, the ability to immerse oneself in an area of study, to follow a narrative, to understand an argument and to develop a critique, is giving way to skimming. Young users of the Internet are good at drawing together information for a school project, for example, but that does not mean they have digested it.
