Time is a strange thing. It’s always moving—almost too fast it seems. Do you ever want to take a break from the fast pace of the modern world If so, a Renaissance(文艺复兴) festival that is now a mix of the historical and the imaginary(虚构的) might be just the ticket!
Exciting shows For a classic festival experience, don’t miss the Hanlon-Lees Action Theatre. You’ll see brave knights(骑士) on horses in a jousting contest. For those looking for a little more magic, the Fantasy Realm is the place. There you can spend time with Shakespearean characters like the Fairy Queen Titania, King Oberon and others.
Music At this year’s festival you’ll find many talented performers. Cantiga, a local Renaissance festival band, is performing ancient European music on their instruments in the Wooden House. If you want to actually take part, you might want to visit The Nightingale. She tells stories with her songs while encouraging the audience(观众) to join in and dance. And this is just a small sample of the music at this year’s festival.
Delicious food Speaking of taste, you could join King Henry’s Table. There you’ll find classic choices such as turkey legs or more modern food such as cheesy chips. And this is only a couple of the many food choices available at the huge event.

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You can also see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity(机会)to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations. Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
★ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence (自信) and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “little things can change a person’s life for the better.”

Life’s greatest lesson for Granny Hu can be found in a cup of the green tea she has grown and spent most of her life: the bitter comes before the sweet, and she has known both. She was good at growing things from at least age 14. She loved the soil and worked in her gardens until she was 113. “My grandma is quick-witted and hard-working. She was better at planting crops than others, so in the years when there were shortages of food she was able to support the family,” his grandson said. Granny Hu is the oldest person in her village and she experienced all the hardships during the life. “I have lost my husband, my children and my brothers, but I couldn’t lose myself in sadness. Luckily, I can always find love in my family and that is how I was encouraged to carry on.”
Another centenarian (百岁老人), Granny Yang, gave birth to eight children. “In the darkest days, we didn’t have enough food to support the big family, so I went into the mountains to look for food to feed my children instead of giving them away, as many people did,” she said, “no one in my family was allowed to shout or scream at each other. My children grew up in peace.” What’s more, she helped her children get a better education. “Education is the best soil to support children’s growth and will improve themselves for a lifetime.”
The poor life inspires a strong wish for change. That’s the most important lesson that Grandpa Dong said he has learned in life. Like most older people in China, he expected to spend his life farming. However, because of the wars, he was driven out of his farm. He spent nearly 10 years to make his way home. The condition in his home was more terrible than that before he left. To improve the poor life, he left his farm again to look a new way to make a living. He did business and he finally made a comfortable living. This 108-year-old man gives his advice to others: “Don’t be afraid of change.”
All these centenarians have one thing in common—The quickest way to happiness and long life is to do nothing negative. Have a joyful heart and be kind to others. If you want to live up to be 100 years old, try their ways!
8. Which is NOT TRUE about Granny Hu
A. She thinks life is like a cup of green tea
B. She couldn’t support her family after she lost her husband.
C. She works on farming for nearly 100 years.
D. She was able to go through all the hardships because of the love from her family.
9. What does Granny Yang think is more important
A. Enough food to support the big family. B. Having a big family.
C. A better education for her children. D. Growing up in peace.
10. From the third paragraph, we can infer that Grandpa Dong ________.
A. will spend his life farming B. had been a soldier during the war.
C. is probably a businessman. D. is afraid of change.
11. Which is the best title for the passage

My teachers discovered my paper-thin, worn-out clothes, my bad body smell, the countless hurts and burns, and why I hunted for food from dustbins. My second-grade teacher, Ms. Moss, asked the headmaster for help. The next morning, my mother, an alcoholic (酒鬼), and the headmaster had a private meeting. Then Ms. Moss lost her job and I never saw her again.
Things went worse. I lived in the downstairs garage, did all chores, but received almost no food. My mother even changed my name “David” into “it”, and punished my brothers if they gave me food, used my real name or even looked at me.
My only safe haven (港湾) was my teachers. They did their best to make me feel like a normal child. Sitting in the garage and shivering from the cold, I closed my eyes, pictured my teacher’s face and felt warm inside.
One Friday afternoon, I looked at my head teacher, Mr. Ziegler. I knew he felt my pain. I bowed my head in respect, somehow hoping for a wonder.
On March 5, 1973, my hopes were answered. Four teachers, the school nurse and the headmaster decided to ask the local govemment for help. Because of my condition, I was immediately placed into protective custody (监护). Before I left, they hugged me one by one. ▲ They reminded me of Ms. Moss. As a child called “it”, I felt I wasn’t worth their trouble.
One teacher gently whispered, “No matter the result, whatever happens to us, this is something we must do. As teachers…if we can influence one child’s life… This is the true meaning of our job.”
After a round of goodbyes, with tears running down my face, I promised I’d never forget them and do my best to make them proud someday.
On March 5, 1993, I returned to Thomas Edtison Elementary and presented my teachers with my first book, A Child Called “I”. I looked at them, tears running down their faces, and said, “As a child I learned that teachers have but one goal: to somehow make a difference in a child’s life. My four teachers, school nurse and headmaster risked their jobs to save the life of a child called ‘it’. I cannot, will not forget their courage and belief. Twenty years ago, I promised to my teachers. And tonight I renew (重申) my promise.”

9. What does Granny Yang think is more important
A. Enough food to support the big family. B. Having a big family.

C. is probably a businessman. D. is afraid of change.
11. Which is the best title for the passage
A. How to live to be 100 years old B. The experience during one’s life
C. Life’s greatest lessons of centenarians D. The lifestyle of some centenarians

A. be a good teacher at the school B. encourage children to read his book
C. make a difference in a child’s life D. make them proud of him
15. What can we learn about the writer from the passage
