In a gray box, I have a thick pile of love letters. I imagine about sharing them with a granddaughter when I’m 90. But my most treasured love letter is from one of my best friends. It’s a handwritten letter years ago when I was having trouble getting over a man. Her letter is the most romantic in my pile. It made no excuses. It simply let me know that I was loved.
Reflecting on her gift, and the dying art of handwritten letters in our age of emails and emoticons, I chose to conduct an experiment this Christmas: replacing presents with heartfelt, handwritten love letters for my family members.
In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and emotions with the people in our lives. Handwriting captures the writer’s emotions, often preserved longer than digital exchanges. However, technology is taking over. First came typewriters and keyboards. Now a new brain-computer lets people type with their minds. What are we losing when we sacrifice the physical labor behind the written word We tend to value what we struggle for. Have we undervalued the human exchange of ideas
That day, I came across a letter my mom wrote to her parents when she was young. She seemed so comfortable with her parents. It was a relationship I didn’t have with her. I was inspired by my mother’s letter to her parents when I sat down to write my letter to her. I wanted her to know my love, and to close the crack that technology and culture had created between us. With each sentence, I was discovering new and deeper ways of seeing my mother, and making myself known to her in more thoughtful ways as well.
Eight single-space pages later, my hand was aching but I was done. It was only the first of my love letters, but it was already clear: What had begun as a fun project was in fact one of the most important undertakings of my life.
4. Why does the author mention her love letters in Paragraph 1
A. To show her grand charm as a young girl. B. To share them with one of her granddaughters.
C. To highlight the value of handwritten letters. D. To look back upon her romantic relationship.
5. How will technology probably affect us in the digital age
A. Making our interaction less emotional. B. Encouraging our thoughtful communication.
C. Saving our physical labor in conveying emotions. D. Increasing our effort in handwritten exchanges.
6. Why did the author handwrite a letter to her mother
A. To give her mother a big surprise. B. To answer her mother’s handwritten letter.
C. To bridge a communication gap. D. To make her mother feel more comfortable.
7. What did the author learn from her experiment
A. The irreplaceable bond of family members. B. The tendency of information technology.
C. The expression of emotions in the digital age. D. The power of handwritten correspondence.

The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content. A small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youths that experience anxiety disorders.
Social media has a reinforcing nature. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick
“The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites,” Sperling says. “When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat.” To boost self-esteem and feel a sense of belonging in their social circles, people post content with the hope of receiving positive feedback. FOMO--fear of missing out--f also plays a role. Teenagers hope to keep track of friends’ activities. Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression.
The earlier teens start using social media, the greater impact they have on mental health. This is especially true for females. While teen males tend to express aggression physically, females do so by excluding others and sharing hurtful comments. Social media increases the opportunity for such harmful interactions.
In addition, social media puts a lens filter (滤镜) on appearances and reality. When there’s a filter applied to the digital world, it can be hard for teens to tell what’s real and what isn’t, which comes at a tough time for them physically and emotionally.
We can benefit from social platforms to some extent as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world. Still, the platforms have opened a “Pandora’s box” as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.
In addition to limiting likes, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. Regardless of how likely social media giants, are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
8. Why does Instagram limit likes
A. To share more contents. B. To increase its popularity.
C. To ensure teens’ well-being. D. To reduce teens’ online time.
9. What does “Pandora’s box” in Paragraph 6 imply
A. Social media can be double-edged. B. People benefit from social platforms.
C. People get boxes of gifts from social platforms. D. Social media opens a door for people to. see the world.
10. Which of the following does Sperling agree with
A. Its lens. help teens to tell the real world.
B. Its unpredictable outcome attracts frequent visits.
C. It is helpful to teens with anxiety and depression.
D. It has a greater impact on female teens than male, teens.
11. What will the author most probably talk about next
A. Advice on users’ controlling mass sharing. B. Reasons for teens’ posting addictions.
C. Negative effects of harmful interactions. D. Ways of social media giants’ management.
D
A small robot that can change its shape and produce heat shows potential in targeting cancer cells and preventing internal bleeding. It can also be used for delivering drugs directly to tumors (肿瘤) or inaccessible areas within the human body.
Researchers, led by Ren Hao Soon at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, developed a centimeter-sized robot inspired by pangolins (穿山甲). It is constructed with soft and magnetic (磁性的) materials, allowing the robot to change its shape.
To enable movement, shape shifting, and heat generation, the researchers applied magnetic fields to the robot’s metal parts. By adjusting the frequency of these fields, the robot was able to heat up and give out heat into its surroundings. The team observed that the robot’s body temperature could be over 70℃.
In addition, the researchers used the robot’s heat to deliver substances within a simulated (模拟的) stomach environment. They attached something simulating medicine capsules onto the robot, which dissolved upon heating, thereby releasing the goods. This technique holds promise for targeted drug delivery inside the body.
Soon, his team also tested the robot’s ability to halt bleeding. They created wounds using a dead pig’s stomach. By pumping blood through a small incision using a syringe, they simulated bleeding. Subsequently, the robot extended and covered the area, giving out heat to help stop bleeding.
According to Jake Abbott from the University of Utah, the robot could potentially be employed for targeted destruction of tumor cells, reducing the need for exposing large amounts of tissue to radiation or chemicals. By raising the robot’s temperature to a level unsafe for normal cells and keeping it in place for a few minutes, cancer cells can be killed. Abbott emphasizes the high temperature sensitivity of the human body.
12. What can we infer about the small robot
A. It has been put into use.
B. It is mainly used to deliver goods.
C. It draws inspiration from the natural world.
D. It can’t be used without adding hard elements.
13. How do the researchers make the robot change shape
A. By using heat. B. By using magnets.
C. By using radiation. D. By using chemicals.
14. What does the underlined word “halt” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Stop. B. Challenge. C. Evaluate. D. Explore.
15. Which can be the best title for the text
A. A Tiny Robot Will Be Used In Medicine
B. Scientists Will Make Robots Give Out Heat
C. A Small Robot Was Made To Deliver Goods
D. Doctors Have Used Tiny Robots To Cure Tumors

My political career in the Student Union(SU)began by throwing frisbees (飞盘) on the campus lawn. I would throw a frisbee to someone I didn’t know and they would throw it to someone they didn’t know. Before long, we had built a community of people who met every day at lunch to throw frisbees.
Besides frisbees, the group decided to climb the mountain near our campus. When we reached the peak, it felt like we were at summer camp. We laughed, danced and told jokes. It was totally fun. While playing like little children in the cool mountain air, we all decided to do it again the following week. Our motto (座右铭) was “Bring a Friend” . We started out with a small group of hikers. But as the word spread, the number of participants increased. We made it a rule to climb the mountain every weekend. All of us were passionate about the fantastic experience, which we were looking forward to.
One day on campus, I decided to throw my frisbee to some strangers, run over and invite them to climb the mountain. Much to my surprise, a girl sitting in a wheelchair got hold of it. Her name was Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn’t. Holding the wheelchair tightly, she hung down her head in awkward silence. Then she told me that she had suffered from lung disease when she was young and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day. So, it was impossible for her to move without help. Fortunately, things got better.
With continuous efforts and treatment, she managed to live on her own with the assistance of the wheelchair: I told her that my friends and I would carry her if she were up for it. On hearing what I said, she refused without hesitation, adding that it would be a bother to carry her. But I tried my best to persuade her to come along with us by talking about the interesting experiences.

1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Having thought for a while, Grace still refused my offer.

A. To give her mother a big surprise. B. To answer her mother’s handwritten letter.
C. To bridge a communication gap. D. To make her mother feel more comfortable.
7. What did the author learn from her experiment

We can benefit from social platforms to some extent, as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world.

To enable movement shape shifting, and heat generation, the researchers applied magnetic fields to the robot’s metal parts.
