Part-time jobs for the 15- and 16-year-olds
Waiters/Waitresses A job as a waiter or waitress is a good choice for the 16-year-olds. They not only can earn $9-$12 an hour, but can also get tips(小费). Most people that visit a restaurant don’t just have good food. They come here to relax and have a good time. Besides serving food quickly, a young waiter who talks to them politely with a smile on his face will make the diners enjoy their time in the restaurant.
Work in a library If one is fond of books, working in a library is another suitable choice. Besides the good pay, it offers a lot of free time when students can actually sit down and finish their homework. So on returning home, they would have time to hang around with friends or just to relax. So working in a library is an excellent part-time job for teens, especially for the school students.
Internet jobs There are many ways of making money through online jobs like clicking on advertisements, visiting sites and signing up with them. However, such online jobs don’t pay well. A better Internet job for teens is to complete online surveys. These are quite simple surveys that usually ask one about his/her opinions and ideas. Many companies use these ideas to make products designed for teenagers.
21.Where will a student who is busy with his research paper probably choose to work
A.In a restaurant. B.In a library.
C.On the Internet. D.In an IT company.
22.What’s the author’s purpose of writing this text
A.To tell us the importance of doing part-time jobs.
B.To advise teenagers how to choose a part-time job.
C.To teach young people how to make lots of money.
D.To introduce his/her experience in doing part-time jobs.
23.Why do some companies ask the teens to do surveys
A.The teens have more free time.
B.They can pay less to the teens.
C.They need advice to make products for teens.
D.The teens usually express their true opinions.

A girl had to usually face adversity(逆境). One day, she couldn’t help complaining to her father about her life and how hard things were for her. She didn’t know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of struggling. It seemed as if one problem was solved and a new one arose.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to the boil. In the first he placed carrots and in the second he placed eggs, and in the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them into the water and boiled them, without saying a word.
The daughter waited impatiently, wondering what he was doing. In about twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He made the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in another bowl. Then he poured the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her, he asked, “What do you see ” “Carrots, eggs and coffee,” she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After removing the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma(香味). She humbly asked, “What does it mean, Father ”
He explained that each of them had faced the same hardship—boiling water, but each reacted differently. The carrot had been strong and hard. But after being put into the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been easily broken. Its thin outer shell had protected its inner liquid. But after going through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique. After they were in the boiling water, they changed the water. “Which are you ” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean ”
How about you, my friend Are you the carrot that seems hard, but with pain and adversity moves back and becomes soft and loses the strength Are you the egg, which starts off with a flexible heart Did you have a liquid spirit, but after a breakup, a divorce, or a layoff, have you become hardened and stiff Your shell looks the same, but are you bitter and tough with a stiff heart Or are you like the coffee bean The bean changes the boiling water, which brings the pain. When the water gets the hottest, it just tastes better. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and make things better around you.
Ask yourself how you handle adversity. Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean

Social media allows teenagers to create online identities, communicate with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teenagers with valuable support. Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and teach them different kinds of subjects, including healthy behavior. However, social media use can also negatively affect teenagers, distracting them, influencing their sleep, and exposing them to bullying(恐吓), rumor(谣言) spreading, untrue views on other people’s lives and peer pressure.
There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.
Set reasonable limits. Talk to your teenager about how to avoid letting social media affect his or her activities, sleep, meals or homework. Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers’ bedrooms. Set an example by following these rules yourself.
Monitor your teenager’s accounts. Let your teenager know that you’ll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts. You might aim to do so once a week or more. And make sure you follow through.
Explain what’s not OK. Discourage your teenager from gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation—online or otherwise. Talk to your teenager about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.
Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly important to teenagers who are vulnerable to social anxiety disorder.
Talk about social media. Talk about your own social media habits. Ask your teenager how he or she is using social media and how it makes him or her feel. Remind your teenager that social media is full of unrealistic images.
If you think your teenager is experiencing signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child’s health care provider immediately.

31.Who is the text written for

Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in,fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
Teenagers who experienced the long absence of a parent were likely to have emotional(情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted(盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and found ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for teenagers and their parents to stay close.
In fact, earlier research suggests that children see their parents as a safe base from which they explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities. Perhaps teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady(稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
32.What did the study find about the 618 teens
A.They had more dinners with their parents.
B.They were more prepared to help themselves.
C.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
D.They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
33.What is the author’s attitude to her two friends’ behavior
A.She doubts them.
B.She supports them.
C.She is worried about them.
D.She cares little about them.
34.What does the earlier research say about young kids according to Paragraph 5
A.They want their parents’ presence.
B.They want their parents to be safe.
C.They want more freedom from parents.
D.They show more interest in new activities.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Teens Want Potted Plant Parents
B.Your Kids Still Need Conversation
C.Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers
D.Parents Know Little About Today’s Teenagers

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when facing a problem, she should never give up. Instead she should try another solution. In the following years, Lisa always remembered her father’s words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road. After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn’t give up. One day, at a friend’s party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(编织的) sweater. It wasn’t a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches(针法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself. She said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. “Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes,” she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater.
Lisa’s friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order 40 such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.
The next day, Lisa told the good news to Madam Dean.
Lisa then remembered her father’s words.

A
根据文章第二部分中的“it offers a lot of free time when students can actually sit down and finish their homework”可知,忙于论文的学生可能会选择在图书馆工作,故选B。
根据第五段第一句中的“He explained that each of them had faced the same hardship—boiling water”可知父亲解释说每种食物遇到的相同的困难是沸水,因此父亲用沸水代表困难。
根据第五段中的“The carrot had been strong and hard. But after being put into the boiling water, it softened and became weak.” 故选A。
C
根据第三段第三句“Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers bedrooms.”
根据画线词上文“Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly important to teenagers”可知,此处表示这对易患社交焦虑症的青少年来说尤为重要。
根据文章大意以及最后一段“If you think your teenager is experiencing signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child s health care provider immediately.”
根据文章第二段中的“Teenagers who experienced the long absence of a parent were likely to have emotional or behavioral problems”可知,他们更有可能在情感方面有问题。
根据文章第四段中的“Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for teenagers and their parents to stay close.”
根据文章第五段中的“In fact, earlier research suggests that children see their parents as a safe base from which they explore the world.”和“Perhaps teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around.” 故选A。
根据文章第三段中的“And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted plant.” 故选A。
根据下文中的“Go for a run with a friend”“get exercise” “Keep up with the local events”可知,本段讲的都是有助于避免网瘾的一些兴趣爱好,故D项“培养一个爱好或兴趣”符合语境。

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Miss Worried,
I’m sorry to know that you re having difficulty falling asleep. The truth is that everyone will face great pressure when entering high school, so you don’t have to worry so much. Here are three tips.
First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of sharing your feelings and getting support. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends as physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of pressure. Third, work out a schedule and follow it. This way, you can make good use of your time.
I hope you’ll find them useful.
Yours,
Li Hua
