Ruby Tucker dances around a heavy bag hanging from a chain inside Zilla Boxing Club in New Jersey. Each punch(重拳击打) is accompanied by the sounds of the 8-year-old’s breathing and sounds of gloves striking the bag and chains sounding. With lightning speed, she throws a set of punches, including the uppercut and the hook—her favorites because she says, they’re the strongest punches, the best ones for knocking a person down. They allow her to move fast, with confidence.
“Nice job, baby,” said her father, coach and trainer Kijuan Tucker, the owner of Zilla Boxing Club for the youth. When Tucker first introduced his daughter to boxing, it was all about teaching her self-defense(自卫). Ruby, however, was a born boxer and took to the sport immediately. It became her true passion when she was young. “You can’t always be with your kids, and I feel like she will be capable of handling herself if needed,” Tucker said.
The confidence she’d gained from the sport also inspired Tucker to open Zilla Boxing Club so that other children could learn to defend themselves. “Boxing really helps with confidence. We don’t expect everyone to become a world champion, but that confidence developed through training and discipline is amazing,” Tucker said. “To me, the main thing I look for right now is a confidence builder more than anything else. It’s what any champion needs.”
“What I want people to know about boxing is that it is not always about winning,” Ruby said. “It is about giving your effort and giving your all, and then that matters when you have a win under your belt.”
1.How does the author start the text
A.By explaining the best punches of boxing.
B.By describing a scene of boxing training.
C.By introducing a fierce boxing match.
D.By talking about the boxing rules.
2.Why did Tucker want Ruby to learn boxing at first
A.To help start his boxing club.
B.To attract more boxing fans.
C.To defend herself.
D.To let her have a hobby.
3.What does Tucker focus on in his boxing teaching
A.Making more money to be a millionaire.
B.Training the youth to become world champions.
C.Training the youth to become most skillful.
D.Helping kids become confident about themselves.
4.What does Ruby want others to learn from boxing
A.Success matters after you try your best.
B.Failure comes when you refuse to work hard.
C.Winning is accompanied with receiving belts.
D.Honors are awards for your expenses.
Although most games have winners and losers, the goal of sports is not to win every game. The real goals include getting exercise, having fun, and learning important social skills, like sportsmanship.
Good sportsmanship is all about respect. Good sports respect their teammates and also their opponents. They respect their coaches, and they also respect the referees or other officials involved in their games. 1 Bad sports shout at their teammates and they talk back to coaches or referees.
Kids usually learn sportsmanship from the adults in their lives. 2 If parents and coaches show disrespect for other fans, referees, or each other, kids will likely act the same way on the field.
3 Some of them are very basic, like shaking hands with other players before a game. Others may take a little more courage, such as acknowledging a great play made by the opposing team.
Learning good sportsmanship is important because it helps you develop an attitude of politeness(礼貌) and respect that will carry over into all the other areas of your life. 4 Being a good sport in the classroom will eventually lead to being a good sport in the workplace.
So be a good sport in whatever you do! 5 When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn’t the most important thing, you can move on to focusing on the important things, like having fun, getting exercise, and improving your skills!
A.Good sportsmanship can be shown in many ways.
B.However, bad sportsmanship is all about disrespect.
C.The example you set can be a powerful teaching tool for others.
D.Kids’ parents and coaches set an example to them.
E.We can be good sports by encouraging others but not laughing at them.
F.Starting as a good sport earlier will help you be a good sport as you get old.
G.If you’re a good sport on the field, you’ll also likely be a good sport in the classroom.

Ⅰ.1.medals 2.cyclists 3.overtook
Ⅱ.1.in sight 2.slow down 3.speed up 4.catch up with 5.In response to
Ⅲ.1.against/from 考查介词。 defend sb. against/from... 故填against或from。
7.that/which 考查定语从句。 故填that或which。
Ⅳ.1.while Mary is shy and quiet 2.what senior high school life is like 3.which/that you can take advantage of 4.With all the popcorn sold out

根据第一段中的“Ruby Tucker dances around a heavy bag...including the uppercut and the hook”可知,本段开篇描述了Ruby Tucker这个八岁的孩子练习拳击的场景。
根据第二段第二句“When Tucker first introduced his daughter to boxing, it was all about teaching her self-defense.”
根据第三段中的“To me, the main thing I look for right now is a confidence builder more than anything else.”
根据最后一段中的“It is about giving your effort and giving your all, and then that matters when you have a win under your belt.” 故选A。

长难句
原句 The confidence she’d gained from the sport also inspired Tucker to open Zilla Boxing Club so that other children could learn to defend themselves.
“she’d gained from the sport”为省略了关系代词that或which的定语从句,修饰先行词confidence;so that引导目的状语从句,意为“以便”。
根据空前句“Kids usually learn sportsmanship from the adults in their lives.(孩子们在生活中通常会向成年人学习体育精神。)” 。
3.A 主旨句。根据后文“Some of them are very basic...before a game.(其中一些非常简单,比如在比赛前和其他队员握手。)”
G项中的“in the classroom”在后文中复现。
5.C 细节句。根据后文“When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn’t the most important thing(当其他人看到你的行为方式表明获胜不是最重要的事情时)”可知,C项(你树立的榜样对其他人来说是一个强大的教学工具。)
【高频词汇】 1.social skill 社交技能 2.talk back to 顶嘴,回嘴 3.disrespect n.
When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn’t the most important thing, you can move on to focusing on the important things, like having fun, getting exercise, and improving your skills!
