During work hours, among the sounds of machines, the kitchen of Bach’s Bakery (面包房) is especially tidy and quiet, not because of any rules against talking during work hours, but because all of the workers have a hearing disability. They are hard-working and professional in their work, and use sigh language to communicate with each other from time to time.
Bach’s Bakery lies in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It is run by a German couple, UweBrutzer and his wife DorotheeBrutzer, who started it up ten years ago with the purpose of providing more jobs for those disabled in the neighborhood. Now, as they are preparing to return to Germany, they have found a German couple teaching in China as the new managers, and handed over the bakery to a public welfare (福利) organization. On the first night in their new home, Mother said, “You’ve often wanted an adventure (历险), haven’t you Now it has come. I told Mrs. Viney to leave us supper. I guess she’s put it in the other room. Let’s go and see.”
They looked in the other room, but found no supper.
“We can’t have any supper today,” said Phyllis, the youngest daughter, unhappily.
“Yes, we can,” said Mother. “We can unpack one of the boxes. There’s some food from the old house in London.”
It was a strange supper—tomatoes, potato chips, dried fruit and cake. After supper, they put sheets (床单) and blankets on the beds and then went to sleep.
The next morning, the children got up early. They looked outside and saw the country house stood in a field near the top of a hill.
“This place is much prettier than our old house in London,” said Phyllis. The other children all agreed.
All day, they helped Mother tidy up the rooms. Then in the late afternoon, Mother said, “That’s enough for today. You can walk around for an hour before supper.”
“Where shall we go ” said Bobbie.
“To the railway, of course!” cried Peter, now the only man in the family.
The railway line was at the foot of the hill, by a wooden fence (篱笆). They climbed onto the top of the fence. Suddenly, they heard a noise. The next moment, the railway line began to shake and a train came screaming out of the tunnel (隧道).
“Oh!” said Bobbie, “It was like a great wild animal going by!”
“I wonder if it is going to London,” said Bobbie. “I’m sure Father is there. I miss him very much.”
“Let’s go down to the station and find out,” said Peter.
They walked along the edge of the railway line to the station and then up to the platform (站台). They saw the Station Master was half asleep behind a newspaper.
There were a great many railway lines at the station. On one side of the big station yard was a large pile of coal. There was a white line on the wall behind, near the top of the pile.
“What does the white line stand for ” Bobbie asked.
“It’s to show how much coal there is,” said the Station Master, who was standing behind them with a friendly smile. “Then we can know if anybody steals (偷) some. ”
The following three days were all wet, and it was very cold in their new house.
“Can we make a fire ” asked Bobbie.
“We can’t make a fire in June,” said Mother.
After tea, Peter told his sisters, “I have an idea, I’ll tell you about it later.”
And two nights later, Peter said to his sisters, “Come and help me.”
On the hill, just above the station, there were some big stones in the grass. Between the stones, the girls saw a small pile of coal.
“Help me carry it up to our house.” said Peter.
After three journeys up the hill, the coal was added to the pile by the back door.
Another week later, Mrs. Viney looked at the pile of coal and said, “There’s more coal here than I thought.”
The children laughed silently and said nothing.
