Habitat improvement and a series of protective measures have played a crucial(至关重要的) role in the rise of the population of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys(滇金丝猴), one of the planet's most endangered animals.
The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey, also known as the black-and-white snub-nosed monkey, lives in high-altitude areas at more than 3,000 meters above sea level in Southwest China's Yunnan Province and neighboring Xizang. About 65 percent of its population inhabits the Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve.
“Currently, the reserve is home to about 3,000 Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys,” said Lai Jiandong, head of the Wildlife Protection Station at the reserve. When the reserve was first established in 1983, however, the population numbered a mere 800.
Lai stresses the continuous enhancement of management levels within the reserve, including the adoption(采用) of cutting-edge technologies for monitoring(监测) and protecting not only the snub-nosed monkeys but also other endangered wildlife species.
“In recent years, using technologies like infrared(红外线的) cameras, we have taken pictures of rare and endangered creatures such as leopards, jackals and sambar deer,” Lai noted, emphasizing the important role of such advancements in wild animal protection.
The primary duties of the Wildlife Protection Station involve the daily care of the snub-nosed monkeys in Weixi Lisu autonomous county, as well as the sheltering and rescue of injured animals. “Over the past few years, we have provided assistance for more than 200 wild animals, including Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, pandas and macaques,” said Lai.
The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is under China's national first-class protection and has been listed as an endangered species on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They will be better protected.

A tiny Alaskan village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.
More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaskan village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf(大陆架), more bears are remaining on land to look for food.
Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight (困境) of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.
“The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011,” said Jennifer Reed of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Today we're talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year,” said Reed. Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife-viewing tours, said, “I have been offering polar bear tours since 2004.” Most of his clients (客户) are from China and Europe, as well as from other states of US. Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.
28.What causes more polar bears to stay on land in Kaktovik
A.Food shortages.
B.Climate change.
C.Habitats' movement to shore.
D.Their preference for land.
29.How did common people feel about more sights of bears on land

Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However, a zoo in Tennessee made the headlines recently after it welcomed one of the world's most uncommon giraffes.
On July 31, a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated(网状的) giraffe, one of the four different kinds of giraffes. Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. About six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother's care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such as eating rocks.
Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan. A giraffe's pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.
“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. Being single-colored, she may not be able to hide quite as well,” said Mr. David Bright, who runs the zoo. “She will easily be a key target for poachers(偷猎者) because she's so unusual.”
Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain.
This brown giraffe's birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. By supporting efforts like this, we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.
32.What do we know about the spots of giraffes
A.They help protect giraffes.
B.They are the same pattern.
C.They look like giraffes' footprints.
D.They appear on giraffes occasionally.
33.What makes the young giraffe born at Brights Zoo special
A.Its extremely large size.
B.Its light brown fur.
C.Its unusual eating habit.
D.Its absence of spots.
34.What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in Paragraph 5

C.Doubled. D.Balanced.
35.Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe
A.Meaningful. B.Worrying.
C.Awkward. D.Foreseeable.

Should We Create More National Parks
to Save Endangered Animals
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct 36 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
37 If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. 38
On the other hand, some people fight the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals living in their natural environment are happier. 39 They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. 40 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemy, that is, human beings.
A.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B.Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D.These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E.Firstly, national parks protect these animals' natural environment.
F.They say that though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.
G.There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.

Dogs can do so much for us, whether they're service dogs that can help with mental health problems or search and rescue dogs saving lives during a natural disaster. However, sometimes dogs are the ones who need a helping hand from us.
This year, I visited the Rochdale Canal(运河) in Manchester with my two friends, Jack and Ben, where we could film lots of beautiful scenes. At the end of the visit, we managed to seek out a place to have a rest. Suddenly, we saw a man lying and struggling with a leash(拴狗链) over a wall. When we got closer, we realized the man was in trouble. At that time, I just took my camera to film some beautiful scenes.
The man held the leash tightly to try to keep his dog from being dragged away. The dog fell into the canal, struggling to catch the leash. Obviously, the man was panicking(惊慌). With the camera put on the wall, we quickly jumped in to help. We couldn't let that dog down without help. I climbed down the canal first. However, the wall of the canal was too high, so I was not enough to get the dog. We noticed the man in pain and the dog desperately moved his back legs in search of the ground.
Finally, my friend, Jack, was seized by a sudden inspiration.
“I am the tallest of us. I am dangled(悬挂)upside down by the legs and you can drag my legs so I could reach the dog,” Jack said excitedly.
“That is a good idea,” the man said happily.

根据第二段中的“...increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice...more bears are remaining on land to look for food.”
根据第三段中的“As more attention was given to the plight of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.”
根据最后一段中的“Most tourists visit in the fall”以及“Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels.” 故选A。

根据第一段第一句“Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies.” 故选A。
根据第二段第二句“Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe.”
故选A。

One possible version:
We carried out our plan immediately. Jack was dangled upside down by the legs and we dragged his legs so that he could lower himself into the canal. He got hold of the dog's collar with his right hand, and placed his left hand under the dog's front legs for support. Jack was then pulled up by us, and the dog was safe and sound. The crowd who had gathered around clapped and cheered for us. Afterwards, both the dog and the owner were so happy that they ran around the canal in celebration. At the same time, I realized my camera had filmed the whole event. All of us felt excited.
The video of the moving rescue was posted online after we came back home. We found it had raised much attention and many people watched it and left comments. It has earned over 75,000 likes, with dozens of people praising the efforts of us who put ourselves in danger to save the dog, which made us surprised and delighted. It was a precious experience and left us with wonderful memories. We only did what anyone else would do.
