Coco Gauff won the U.S. Open women’s title in 2023. Gauff became only the third American teenager to win the national women’s title four years after she rose to fame in the sport by beating Venus Williams, one of her childhood idols, at the Wimbledon Championships when Gauff was just 15 years old.
When Gauff was barely school age she held a tennis racket (球拍) and told her parents that she wanted to be the best player in the world. By the time Gauff was seven, she was training with a tennis professional two hours a day, several days a week. Her father suggested that the family move from Atlanta to Delray Beach, Florida, home to some of the best tennis training camps in the world. At 13, Gauff was the youngest U.S. Open Junior Girls’ Singles finalist in history; at 14, she became one of the youngest winners of the French Open Girls’ Singles.
The win against Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon was a bit of a dreamy moment for both players. Gauff was 15; Williams was 39. Gauff beat Williams in straight sets in a surprising upset. When the competitors met at the net for the traditional handshake, Gauff tried to make the moment special. “Thank you for everything you have done for the sport,” Gauff said at the time.
Despite her age,Gauff showed skills that both set her apart and made her worthy of being mentioned with other tennis geniuses, including Tracy Austin, Jennifer Capriati, and Andrea Jaeger. Yet her professional career has not been without its challenges. Since beating Williams in the first round at Wimbledon, she has found herself knocked out in the first round at the 2022 Australian Open and at Wimbledon in 2023. Still, Gauff has shown consistent improvement in her game on the world stage.
1.Why did Gauff’s family move to Delray Beach
A.For comfortable life. B.For stronger competitors.
C.For better training. D.For further education.
2.How did Gauff make the moment of the handshake special
A.By saying thanks. B.By exchanging rackets.
C.By overcoming upset. D.By asking for instructions.
3.Which of the following words can best describe Gauff
A.Friendly and outgoing. B.Selfless and determined.
C.Caring and competitive. D.Hardworking and talented.
4.In which section of the magazine can you see the text

UNIT 3 SPORTS AND FITNESS
Part 2 Discovering Useful Structures &
Listening and Talking
Ⅰ.1.audience 2.millions 3.cheat
根据设空处后面的were rushed to可知“The ”作主语。
常见的“the+形容词”表示一类人的还有:the young(年轻人)、the old/elderly(老年人)、the poor(穷人)、the rich(富人)、the sick(病人)、the disabled(残疾人)、the wounded(伤员)等,它们作主语时,谓语动词通常用复数形式。
本句是一个由not only...but also...
5.to have finished 考查pretend的用法。 故填to have finished。
Ⅲ.1.didn’t you 2.is there 3.isn’t there 4.didn’t I
5.does it 6.could we 7.shall we 8.will/can you
9.didn’t she 10.isn’t it 11.didn’t you 12.isn’t he
Ⅳ.1.even if/even though you take a taxi 2.working out every day is 3.pretended to be reading

根据第二段第三句中的“Delray Beach, Florida, home to some of the best tennis training camps in the world”可知,Delray Beach有世界上最好的网球训练营,所以搬家是为了Gauff能够得到更好的训练。
根据第三段最后两句中的“Gauff tried to make the moment special. ‘Thank you for everything you have done for the sport,’ Gauff said at the time.” 故选A。
根据第二段第二句“By the time Gauff was seven, she was training with a tennis professional two hours a day, several days a week.” 根据最后一段中的“Despite her age, Gauff showed skills that both set her apart and made her worthy of being mentioned with other tennis geniuses”也可推知她非常有天赋。
根据第一段第一句“Coco Gauff won the U.S. Open women’s title in 2023.”
【高频词汇】 1.rise to fame成名 2.idol n.偶像
3.barely adv.
6.consistent adj.持续的

长难句
原句 Gauff became only the third American teenager to win the national women’s title four years after she rose to fame in the sport by beating Venus Williams, one of her childhood idols, at the Wimbledon Championships when Gauff was just 15 years old.
four years after...为时间状语;one of her childhood idols是Venus Williams的同位语,when引导时间状语从句。
(Lang’s inspiring journey、as a rather successful coach、remarkable achievements),第二、三段讲了郎平面对的困难和挑战(Troubled by serious injuries、has undergone more than 10 operations、struggled to balance...and...),E项“荣誉和挑战是并存的”承接上文提到的荣誉,同时引出下文郎平面对的挑战,符合语境,故选E项。
且该评论与上文中的“one of the greatest players and coaches in history”呼应。
但B项用在这里相比F项似乎少了一些与前文的连带性,与前文的“one of the greatest players and coaches in history”和“an American athlete”在内容上关联性较小。
