“Hey, lady! You can move your ugly car up now!” The silver-haired driver behind me in a fancy truck rudely yelled at me. Without much thought, I yelled back at the man, “What Are you in a rush or something ”
I was waiting in line at the drive-through to order our breakfast on a Sunday morning. There were only 12 inches or so between me and the car in front of me. There were also three additional cars in front of that one. We were getting nowhere fast. What was he hoping to gain by yelling at me
I wanted to let my own anger go after this ridiculous exchange. But the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I was angry that he yelled at a mother in front of two kids. My daughter and my son were both confused and saddened by what they had just witnessed. We were on our way to a soccer tournament, and we had a bonus day free from school and work. Probably, there was nothing in the world to be upset about. Then this man let his anger out.
I told my kids I was so mad that I had to roll my window up so that I wouldn’t keep yelling at this guy. Then, I stopped and looked back. I had moved up the 12 or so inches at his “suggestion”, while he hadn’t moved an inch. Suddenly, I felt sympathy for him. He must have been suffering in some way. As my kids and I slowly made our way to the pick-up window to pay for our order, I had an idea.
“I heard how rude that man was to you, and I wanted to apologize to you for having to put up with that. He isn’t worth paying for,” the cashier said to me. “My kids support me in doing that,” I answered the cashier, adding that hate cannot drive out hate.

What comes into your mind when you think of British food Probably fish and chips or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine, it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best seller lists.
It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain’s consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.
According to a new study from market analysts, 1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has encouraged them to try different food. Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients (配料) than they used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also getting more interested in cooking. The UK’s obsession (痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling. Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.
28. What do people usually think of British food
A. It is simple and plain. B. It is rich in nutrition.
C. It lacks authentic tastes. D. It deserves a high reputation.
29. Which best describes cookery programme on British TV
A. Authoritative. B. Creative. C. Profitable. D. Influential.
30. Which is the percentage of the people using more diverse ingredients now
A. 20%. B. 24%. C. 25%. D. 33%.
31. What might the author continue talking about
A. The art of cooking in other countries. B. Male chefs on TV programmes.
C. Table manners in the UK. D. Studies of big eaters.
D
A new study suggests that smoke from wildfires can change how clouds store water and could lead to less rainfall The research comes as western parts of the United States are currently experiencing drought conditions after several years of intense wildfire activity.
Clouds contain a collection of water droplets (微滴) that form from vapor in the atmosphere. When these droplets condense (凝结) onto each other within a cloud, they become heavier and eventually fall as rain. But the water condensation process requires a solid substance for the vapor to attach to. Different kinds of particles rising up from the Earth’s surface can reach clouds and make this process possible.
The new study found that smoke from wildfires contains small particles that affect the way droplets form in clouds. The main effect was the number of water droplets formed. The team reported that smoky clouds contained about five times the number of droplets as non-smoky clouds. But data also showed that the droplets in smoky clouds were much smaller, about half the size of those in the clouds without wildfire smoke.
It is that size difference, the researchers say, that could reduce the amount of rainfall. This is because small droplets are less likely to grow and eventually fall to the ground as rain. “Because of their small droplet sizes, these smoky clouds are expected to reflect more light and produce less rain than clouds in clean air,” the study states.
The findings could mean that active wildfire seasons in the western U. S. may in fact lead to less rain and more drought, the researchers said. “We were surprised at how effective these primarily organic particles were at forming cloud droplets and what large impacts they had on the microphysics (微观物理) of the clouds,” said Cynthia Twohy, leader of the new study.
Twohy also noted that different kinds of clouds behave differently. The current study examined changes in small cumulus clouds. Other kinds that sit much higher in the atmosphere can cause heavy storms, she said. Twohy added, “I am hoping these results will lead to detailed regional modeling studies that will help us understand the actual impact of smoke on clouds and climate.”
32. Why did the researchers conduct the study
A. They aren’t sure how water droplets form from vapor.
B. There is a great climate change in America.
C. The US has serious drought after wildfires.
D. They wonder how smoky clouds appear.
33. What is a characteristic of smoky clouds
A They tend to reflect more light.
B. They often have lower temperatures than others.
C. They contain more droplets which are larger in size.
D. They have fewer particles for the vapor to attach to.
34. What could smoky clouds lead to according to the text
A. Less rainfall.
B. Much cooler weather.
C. Fewer windy days.
D. More storms.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. There are many reasons for the US drought.
B. Wildfire smoke can make clouds produce less rain.
C. Organic particles play an important role in forming clouds.
D. Humans have to face the serious consequences of wildfires.
第二节(共5小题:每小起2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据文章内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
We eat in our cars, at our desks, on the go, and in front of the TV. We eat take-out, packaged and prepared meals. Why Because it fits our not-enough-time-in-the-day lifestyles. 36 Well, I’m certainly not the first one to think it or say it, but we all need to slow down.
Consumer trends around the globe show that over the past three decades people are purchasing more prepared foods at groceries and eating out more than ever before. It’s predicted that we’ll spend more at restaurants in the coming years. 37 However, we’re getting less healthy.
While debates can be seen in different media over the food industry’s contribution to our growing waistlines and our health problems, the bottom line is this: 38 We can choose to eat a fast-food lunch on the go. We can throw a frozen meal in the microwave and call it dinner. We can eat without thinking, in front of the tube, at our computers, and while driving a car.
39 Studies have shown meaningful links between family meals and kids’ mental and physical well-being. Eating sensibly doesn’t take much time or money, but it does require you to make a conscious decision to do so. Wrapped up in endless work, appointments and social activities, we often fail to enjoy a relaxing meal with our families.
While it can be a challenge to always put healthy eating first, just do your best. Remember that the food you eat has a more significant effect on your health, weight and well being than almost any other activities you do. 40 Every meal made at home --- even just once or twice a week --- is a step closer to a healthier body and a slower eating style.
A. Our food matches our lives.
B. We’re consuming an increasing number of calories.
C. Treat it with the importance that it deserves, but start small.
D. Lunch is the biggest calorie intake when it comes to eating out.
E. Purchase food locally and skip as many packaged items as you can.
F. What we eat, where we eat and how we eat are all under our control.
G. We can devote an hour of the day to enjoying a meal with our families.

第二节(共10小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Where the Sidewalk Ends is a book full of fascinating poems written 56 Shel Silverstein. It contains more than 100 of all kinds of poems-some are happy, some are funny and some are 57 (excite). Each poem comes with a nice drawing by the author 58 (he). Some of the pictures are very silly.
My favourite poem 59 (call)Snowman. It is about 60 happy snowman, which always wants to see July. Other animals say that he will melt(融化)by then. But the snowman wants to see July so 61 (bad)that no matter what other people say, it does not bother the snowman one bit. This poem never says if he actually sees July. So you can only guess.
Another poem I really like is Santa and the reindeer. This poem is about Christmas. Santa has to give 62 (variety)presents to the children while one of his reindeer is always asking what's for him. I guess Santa gets really annoyed because he puts a flea(虱子)in the reindeer's ear. And the next thing you know, they fly away and are ready 63 (continue)their journey through the world handing out presents to all the children 64 have behaved well.
This book is fun to read because of all those unique poems. The 65 (character)of this book do many unusual things such as selling sisters, talking to fish and a lot more.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd-telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal - too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.

One possible version:
Dear Lily,
There will be a free fashion show in the City Museum next week, which focuses on the development of Chinese clothing during more than two thousand years.
The show starts on Monday next week and will last seven days. According to the poster, visitors can even try some of the traditional clothes, such as the famous "horse face skirt", and join in the catwalks with professional models. I think it is a very good opportunity to learn more about Chinese history and culture. If you are interested, we can go there on the weekend.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream” I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream come true ”
