第一节 应用文写作(满分 15分)
Dear Jack,
How is everything going I’m excited that we are to work together on a research project during
the upcoming holidays.
After giving it some thought, I would like to propose a project that explores the influence of
idols on the growth of high school students. That's because idols, ranging from celebrities to
common people, often serve as role models and have a profound impact on teenager's values and
behaviors. Our plan will involve surveying peers, analyzing data, and perhaps interviewing
educators to gain deeper insights.
Would this be something you're interested in Please let me know your thoughts at your earliest
convenience.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
I stopped sniffling and looked at her. Her mild blue eyes smiled into mine. Behind them lay an
iron will. “We’ll have to work very hard, you and I, but I think we can do it. Now that I know what
the problem is, we can try to overcome it.” Hearing her words, I felt a little confused. Sensing my
confusion, she told me she would hire a tutor who knew about dyslexia to help me. She stared at me
with great anticipation. “Are you willing to try, Peter ” At that moment, I felt a ray of hope shone
through the hazy future. “Yes, Mom. I want to have a try.”
The next 6 years were an endurance run for both of us. I studied with a tutor twice a week
until I could brokenly read my lessons. Each night, my mom and I sat at my little desk and practiced
that day’s schoolwork for at least 2 hours, sometimes until midnight. We drilled for tests until my
head pounded and the print blurred before my eyes. I once wanted to quit, but my mom’ s
determination never shook. We experienced many laughters and tears until I passed my senior finals.
I felt lucky that my mother was always there, accompanying me through the most difficult times.

Text 10 用实际行动保护黑脉金斑蝶的男孩
M: Good morning, everyone. In my class presentation today, I’d like to talk about my role model
Noah Raven. During a family vacation to a rainforest in Mexico, 12-year-old Noah saw thousands of
monarch butterflies. He really loved the sight. However, when he was talking to a biologist who was
doing research there, he learned that the butterflies were at great risk of disappearing. He became
very concerned and decided to take action. After Noah returned home with his family, he had a talk
with his parents. He told them he wanted to help monarch butterflies. His parents weren’t surprised.
They knew their son cares about wildlife. They told Noah they’d be there for him. With his parents’
help, the boy created Monarch Defenders. It’s an organization that aims to protect monarch
butterflies. It tries to raise awareness about issues impacting the species, such as loss of habitat,
pollution and climate change. On his website, Noah encourages others to take small, actionable
steps—for example, planting a monarch butterfly habitat in their yard. I hope that we all can follow
Noah’s lead and make an effort to save this species.

National Geographic Film Concert: Secrets of the Whales
This month, the Jack Singer Concert Hall will invite audiences into the underwater world of legendary photographer Brian Skerry and producer James Cameron in National Geographic Film Concert: Secrets of the Whales on May 26-28. With none other than Jann Arden, celebrated musician, actor and author, as a guest commentator guiding audiences into the complex and fascinating families, culture, and play that reveal the secret lives of whales, the whole experience is brought to life by a full orchestra (管弦乐队) and world-class conductor Anthony Parnther.
Called “visually appealing” by The New York Times, this concert presentation brings the most powerful moments of the Emmy-winning Disney+ series together, transporting audiences into the lives of five different whale families as they adapt to ecological changes to their habitats.
“Secrets of the Whales was the most ambitious project of my career as a photographer. If we could see the ocean and our planet through the lens (镜头) of the culture of another species, that could change our view of the natural world and our relation to it,” says Skerry. “Those connections, the communities and the cultures the whales share all mirror human culture, but sometimes we forget about that.”
Brian Skerry has spent nearly four decades exploring and documenting the world’s oceans. He spent more than three years in 24 locations shooting footage for the four-part series Secrets of the Whales. Now, with the most powerful moments selected, the documentary has been edited for this live, two-hour concert performance. Projected on a high-definition screen, the rich filmography and sweeping score is brought to life by a 40-piece
orchestra. Join Arts Commons Presents for this worldwide event, in the Jack Singer Concert Hall at Arts Commons. Get your tickets today at artscommons.ca/whales.

C. Protecting animals’ habitats. D. Researching human culture.
How long did Skerry spend filming the documentary
A. Two hours. B. Four days. C. Over three years. D. About four decades.

Bill Bryson’s phenomenally popular books are a great success of amateur enthusiasm over scholarly expertise. In the highly reviewed Shakespeare (2007), he raced us through the playwright’s life and works in 222 pages; A Short History of Nearly Everything (2003) was his 624-page analysis of “everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilisation” — and it remains the best-selling science book of the 21st century so far. Can he make it again with A Really Short Journey Through the Body, which promises us a “head to toe” tour in 138 pages
In his books for adult readers, Bryson’s success has lain in an ability to turn vast, complex subjects into an easy and pleasant narrative, filled with tiny facts and odd stories. His latest book, which follows his adult title The Body (2020), is aimed at children as young as eight, for whom this proven writing style works well.
“No doubt about it, the human body is a truly remarkable thing,” Bryson writes, and it’s the remarkable facts that interest him the most. Did you know that you blink 14,000 times a day Or that it takes seven billion billion billion atoms to make you And that if you formed all your DNA into a single line, it would reach 10 billion miles across the solar system
Fresh doctors might find some of the entries frustratingly brief. The tongue, for example, receives only a paragraph, while, a chapter, entitled ‘Poo and Farts’, is relatively detailed: “In your life, you’ll probably poo the weight of 5 cars but you’ll have eaten the weight of 60. So that’s not a terrible result.”
Biology books can be heavy weather, but Bryson’s skill, as ever, is to turn the story of the human body into a thoroughly digestible read.
What do Bryson’s latest book and The Body (2020) have in common
A. They are intended for adults. B. They are both about physics.
C. They are easy to read. D. They are both best-selling books.
What is the purpose of Paragraph 3
A. To illustrate the attraction of the book. B. To analyze the structure of the book.
C. To show the scientific value of the book. D. To display the main contents of the book.
What does the underlined phrase “heavy weather” mean in the last paragraph
A. Packed with facts. B. Hard to understand. C. Weather-related. D. Popular and readable.
What is the text
A. A biography of a writer. B. An essay on biology.
C. A news report on science. D. An introduction to a book.
C
Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment (碎片) of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower.
“It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative
director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.”
The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original iron was cut off and preserved over time. Now, some of those preserved metal fragments have found new homes.
Each new Olympic medal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron — though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown” paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形), which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.
How did they think of such an idea Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal ’”
When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream became reality,” adds Roncin.
The medals, designed by the luxury Paris jewelry house Chaumet, make people think of the Eiffel Tower in several other ways. The pieces of iron are secured by what looks like special nails that hold the structure together, and the medals’ ribbons are decorated with patterns of the tower’s latticework structure.
The iron fragments are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks. Over 5,000 medals are being made.
What does Thierry mean by saying “bring back a piece of Paris”
The athletes will buy souvenirs about Paris.
The athletes will take many photos of Paris.
The Eiffel Tower will be left in the athletes’ memory.
Part of the athletes’ medal is from the symbol of Paris.
What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
The symbolic meaning of the hexagons.
The shape and material of the Olympic medal.
The design of the Eiffel Tower iron fragment on the medal.
The processing technique of the Eiffel Tower iron pieces.
How did the designers get the idea of adding the waste iron
A. From a strange dream. B. By asking for the public.
C. By studying the Eiffel Tower. D. Through their discussion.
What can we infer about the new Olympic medals
A. They are innovative. B. They are light.
C. They have six sides. D. They are golden-colored.
D
With the sudden breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) of the last year has come, for those of us in the writing trade, a sudden realization: the robots have come for us, at last.
Writing is how we do our best thinking – as Joan Didion observed, “I don’t know what I think until I write it down” – and thinking is what makes us human. Granted, we’ve already off-loaded some of our thinking to machines: the calculator, for example. But something is lost even here. What happens when we no longer rely on our own thoughts to address more complex problems
Probably it won’t come to that, or not yet. The most sophisticated works of AI still fall well short of the best human writing. They are clever, but obvious. They are capable, just, of humour, but not (the new Turing test ) of making you laugh. Ambiguity is beyond them, as are those incomprehensible leaps of intuition we call genius.
And of course the whole world of authentic flesh-and-blood human experience – emotions, memories, pleasures, pains – is closed to them. At best they can produce a image of them, and while that’s true of many human writers, too, it is not hard to spot it. The technology is still in its infancy. In a few years, we may no longer be able to tell the difference. What then
Even if AI comes to excel us at all types of writing, we may yet be saved by a kind of comparative advantage: it will still make sense for the AI to specialize at what it is “most best” at. The best writing may be produced neither entirely by computer nor by humans, but by the two combined, harnessing the relative strengths of either. For however it is produced, some writing will always be better than other writing. It may be possible to teach a computer to write, but only a human can feel the pleasure of reading. Or the pain.
What does the author think of works of AI
Straightforward and simple. B. Complex and humorous.
C. Funny and attractive. D. Plentiful and emotionless.
What makes works produced by humans different from those by computers
A. The unique style. B. The clear expression. C. The mixed emotion. D. The authentic language.
What can we infer from the last paragraph
AI is not superior to human writers.
AI will definitely appreciate the joy of creation.
AI and human writers are not mutually exclusive.
AI will eventually own its specific way of expression.
What can be a suitable title for the text
A. What difficulty Writing will Face B. Will the Pen Be Mightier than AI
C. How AI Will Change the Future of Writing D. Will AI and the Pen Integrate together
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

Confidence plays a very important role in people's life. It gives people light when they are in dark and encouragement when they are dismayed. 36 People who show confidence seem to grab more rewarding careers, maintain better relationships, and may make miracles in the face of extreme difficulties.
So what is the secret of confidence In fact, there is no secret. 37 It is built, not inborn. You can try these simple tips for practicing and increasing our confidence levels:
First, dare to fail. 38 If you are not failing, you are not trying. Only when we face up to our difficulties, can we build up our confidence and give ourselves a chance of success.
Second, dress your success. You don't have to be beautiful to be confident. Make the most of your won unique physical assets and downplay your flaws so that you know you're giving out your best image.
Third, listen to yourself; do not despise yourself. You are the only person who knows what is right for yourself. 39
Last, build a confidence vocabulary. Stop putting yourself down, and quit incessantly confessing your tiny flaws. Learn to highlight your positive attributes and the world will learn to see and appreciate them too.
40 We should build confidence through constant and patient effort. Only when we have enough confidence in ourselves, can we take the first step on the road to success.
Confidence is a plant that grows slowly.
It is the first step on the road to success.
People are always eager to achieve success.
You should openly express your inner ideas.
Don't put others' opinion above our own inner voice.
Self-confidence is a skill everyone can learn to develop.
Anybody who's genuinely striving is going to fail repeatedly.

My mouth felt dry as I followed my mother into the doctor’s private office and sank into a padded chair next to hers. This doctor examined me and said, “I’m sorry to tell you this, Mrs. Dow, but Peter has dyslexia(诵读困难). A fairly severe case.”
I swallowed and tried to breathe. The doctor went on. “He’ll never read above the 4th-grade level. Since he won’t be able to complete high school requirements, I suggest you enroll him in a trade school where he can learn to work with his hands.”
I didn’t want to go to trade school. My eyes filled with tears, but I forced them back. A 12-year-old was too big to cry.
Mom stood up, so I jumped to my feet, too. “Thank you, Doctor,” she said. “Come along, Peter.”
We drove home without saying much. I felt numb. Dyslexia I’d never heard the word until last week. Sure, I was always the slowest kid in my class. During break I had a special hiding place behind a bush. There I would cry because I couldn’t do my lessons no matter how hard I tried.
Of course, I never told my mom about that part of school. I was too ashamed. I didn’t want to worry her, either. She had enough on her mind with teaching school full-time and taking care of dad, my two brothers, my sister and me.
Mom and I arrived home before the rest of the family. Mom looked into my eyes with tears running down her cheeks. Before I knew what was happening, I was in her arms crying like a big baby. A few minutes later, she led me into the living room to the couch.
“Sit down, honey. I want to talk to you.”
I rubbed my eyes with my sleeve and waited, plucking at the crease in my trousers. “You heard what the doctor said about your not finishing school. I don’t believe him.”
