I can't miss the little old lady with her kerchief (方头巾) on her head, a black umbrella blowing all over. I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I'm driving by, late for my early morning shift. I decide to stop and offer her a ride.
Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car. I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car, she is smiling and thanks me.
I was late for work that day, but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I'm out driving in bad weather.
If there's someone at a bus stop, especially if it's an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask if they need a ride.
Once, a young doctor jumped in. She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and, for the first time, I was able to help a doctor. That felt good.
But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation. I do tend to ask a lot of questions: where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind. Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat. We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over. “What a shame!” I often think when they hop out, as the stories were just getting started.
Now as retirement is drawing near, I believe I have found my calling. I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another ——or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.
As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop. Perhaps there will be somebody who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride. I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.
24. What are the first three paragraphs mainly about
A. How the author started offering rides. B. The value of the author's actions.
C. An old lady who impressed the author. D. An accident that happened 40 years ago.
25. What does the author like most about her ride offers
A. Helping people who contribute to society. B. People accepting her offer without hesitation.
C. Chatting with her passengers. D. Making friends with her passengers.
26. What does the author plan to do
A. Become a taxi driver after retirement. B. Continue driving people to their destinations.
C. Wait to be offered a ride at a bus stop. D. Share her stories with more people.
27. What message does the author want to convey
A. Elderly people need more care and support. B. It is important to find a purpose in life.
C. Offering rides to strangers involves risks. D. Always believe in the goodness in people.

This year I did something I'd never done—shopping at midnight on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. After all, you can get great deals online from the comfort of your bed over a hot cup of coffee. So why would I stand traffic, cold weather and crowds for a few bargains
For my teenagers, spending time with Mom is usually down on their list next to homework and picking up the dog waste. So, when they asked me to take them shopping at the mall at midnight on Black Friday, my first reaction was definitely no! But my son, who usually runs the other way if I mention shopping, wanted me to take him shopping. I felt needed, though I knew it was my wallet and a ride, not quality (高质量的) time with Mom that they wanted.
Then the hour-long car ride. We followed songs on the radio and talked about the deals we hoped to get. I had opportunities to give them lessons on what not to do when driving, but I had to keep the peace. And we all connected as we sat with crazed smiles at midnight.
The kids scanned for a spot once we finally reached the busy parking lot. There was something about standing in a line that snakes around the building in the freezing cold that brings people together. Once inside, we had to work as a team, hoping to come together with just the right size and color. As I dug through mountain s of clothing for a particular shirt for my husband and gave up, my daughter came toward me, shirt in hand and victory on her face. “I got the last one!”
So we ended up at 3 a. m. with some bargains. Nothing we couldn't have found online or in stores at a reasonable hour. But for me, I got quality time with my kids. Driving home tired, looking in the mirror at my children's sweet faces, I decided, “If they ask me to go again next year, I'm in.”
28. What did the kids need according to the author
A. Buying things online with comfort. B. Taking a cup of coffee comfortably.
C. Shopping at their mother's expense. D. Spending quality time with the family.
29. How did the author communicate with her kids during the drive to the mall

C. She taught them shopping tips. D. She lectured them on behavior.
30. Why did the daughter show victory on her face
A. She had worked as a team member. B. She had searched out her clothes.
C. She had been in line to see a snake. D. She had found a shirt for her father.
31. How did the author find her shopping experience
A. Tiring. B. Enjoyable. C. Heart-broken. D. Money-wasting.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources.
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B , compared to a B for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
32. What do the students start worrying about before an exam
A. Whether they can pass the exam.
B. What other students do during the test.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
33. What is the solution developed by researchers
A. Making the students focused on the test.
B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C. Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
34. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________.
A. became less nervous before the test
B. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
C. were better at controlling their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
35. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.
A. writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B. we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C. the best place to write about our worries is in the test room before an exam
D. it doesn't matter where and when we write about our worries before an exam

W: Hi, Jim. I like your walking shoes. I haven't seen any like them in England before. M: They're Italian, Sarah. I got them on my holiday in Austria last month.
W: Oh, I'm going to go there, too.
M: Not many shops sell them. I got mine at the market, but they may have some at the new supermarket. W: How much were they
M: I think they usually cost sixty-eight pounds, but mine were only forty-eight, so I paid twenty pounds less. I was really pleased.
W: Is there anything special I should take
M: Well, pack a hat, because the sun can be strong in the mountains. I took a sweater and a jacket, but I never needed them.
W: Anything else
M: Take lots of T-shirts, one for each day when you're going to go walking.
W: Thanks, Jim.

W: Paul, let's talk about your work experience in South America. What took you there Was it to improve your Spanish
M: Well, I just wanted to find out more about the way people lived there. My spoken Spanish was already pretty good. In fact, I ended up teaching English there.
W: I see. How did you do that
M: I found an agency that runs voluntary projects. Construction was an option. Then there was tourism, which I actually chose to do, and then there was work with local farmers, or we say agriculture.
W: I think it must be a good chance to experience a different life.
M: Yes, but it was hard to be accepted at first. However, when people became more comfortable with me, we really connected with each other in a meaningful way.
W: That's really good. What do you think of the food there M: Simple, but there was plenty to eat.
W: Quite good. Well, I'll look forward to hearing more.

W: Welcome to our program. Today we have invited Fread Wocson, an expert on environment, to talk to us. M: Hello, everybody.
W: There are so many environment problems in the world today. Mr. Wocson, do you think we can really solve them all
M: I hope that world leaders can get together and agree on a plan for action.
W: We need to solve the problem of air pollution. There's lots of clean, modern technology.
M: But companies say it's expensive. Developing countries pay more attention to industrial development than to environment protection.
W: Everyone is looking at the problem in the short term, rather than the long term.
M: It's the same with the damage of the rainforests. Countries and companies just want the wood. W: They're not thinking about the long-term damage to the forests.
M: No. In other parts of the world, especially in Africa, climate change and over-farming are causing farmland to turn into desert.
W: Damaging the environment actually leads to conflict between people.
M: Yes.

Most American college students need to be efficient readers. This is necessary because full-time students probably have to read several hundred pages every week. They don't have time to read a chapter three or four times. They need to obtain as much information as possible from the first or second reading.
An extraordinarily important study skill is knowing how to mark a book. Students mark the main ideas and important details with a pen or pencil, yellow or blue or orange. Some students mark new vocabulary in a different color. Most students write questions or short notes in the margins. Marking a book is a useful skill, but it's important to do it right. First, read a chapter with one pen in your hand and others next to you on the desk. Second, read a whole paragraph before you mark anything. Don't mark too much. Usually you will mark about 10% of a passage. Third, decide on your own system for marking. For example, maybe you will mark main ideas in yellow, important details in blue and new words in orange. Maybe you will put question marks in the margin when you don't understand something. And before an exam, instead, you just need to review your marks and you can save a lot of time.
