Once upon a time, there was a poor man and a rich man. The poor man’s son was named Ham, and the rich man’s son was named Jim. They had been in the same school together since childhood and became good friends.
One day, the two youths began a discussion as to whether wealth or effort was more powerful. Jim said that wealth was most important, while Ham declared for effort. At last, Ham declared, “Let us put it to the test: Let us both go to some far country and try whether wealth or effort is more successful.” Jim agreed to this plan and they fixed a day for starting.
Then they both went home and collected some money and started off early one morning. After a time, they came to a certain country where Ham suggested that they should look for employment. But Jim did not like the notion of becoming a servant and he said that he would live on the money which he had brought with him, which would last for a year or two. “You may do as you like,” answered Ham, “but for my part, I must look for work.” So he went to a village and found employment as a teacher in a school while his friend rented a house and started making various friends, eating and having fun all day.
One year later, Ham earned enough money, built a beautiful house and also got married. However, Jim had already spent all his money, and his friends who indulged in wine and meat also left him. Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most young people wish their parents had given them a different name.
Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Joanne No The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer.
In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from.
Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”.
Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”.
Is every boy called Curtis polite And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope.

Many Silicon Valley parents are becoming more concerned about preventing their children from using screens. Some parents think that even a little screen time can be extremely addictive, so it is better if their children avoid using or seeing these devices completely. However, it is difficult for working adults in the 21st century to give up using a phone at home. So, it’s simpler to employ someone to do this.
“Silicon Valley nanny(保姆)”, who takes children back to a time without screens every day is widely needed. From Cupertino to San Francisco, it’s widely agreed that screen time is harmful to youngsters. Therefore, parents are requesting nannies to keep phones, tablets and computers in a hidden place. Others even offer no-phone agreements.
Research shows that spending too much time on technology can harm young minds. For example, teenagers who use social media frequently are more likely to feel depressed and anxious. Insomnia(失眠) rates have also increased amongst this age group, and an increasing number of children display the signs that they can’t focus attention. These seemingly minor (轻微的) problems could become significant challenges for future generations.
“Many parents come back home and focus on their smartphones, ignoring whatever their children are trying to say,” said Shannon Zimmerman, who works as a nanny in San Jose for families that forbid screen time. “As a nanny, I also call on more parents to spend more time with their kids.”
32. Why are the Silicon Valley nannies greatly needed according to the text
A. To help parents and children balance work and life.
B. To teach children how to use technology responsibly.
C. To keep children away from screens.
D. To encourage children to exercise.
33. What is the result of spending too much time on screens for teenagers
A. Feeling confused. B. Feeling anxious.
C. Feeling bored. D. Feeling nervous.
34. What does Shannon suggest parents do
A. Spend more time with their children.
B. Play games with their children.
C. Stop using smartphones at home.
D. Encourage their children more.
35. What is the text about
A. Science has no effects on young minds.
B. Children are addicted to screen time.
C. All parents limit children to phones.
D. Parents concern about screen time for children.

After hitting the button of an alarm clock a couple of times, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She had a big presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine more than ever. She grabbed(抓住) her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.
As she joined the line of cars in the drive-through(免下车的餐馆), Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of anticipation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of having a cup of coffee was her little daily enjoyment.
The line of cars went forward slowly, and soon, Sarah found herself at the drive-through window. She reached for her purse to pay, but before she could hand over her credit card, the cashier smiled and said, “Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.” “Really ” she asked, both surprised and grateful. The cashier nodded. “Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!”
With a warm smile, Sarah accepted the free coffee and drove away. The unexpected act of kindness was in her mind as she drank the delicious coffee. It put a spring in her step and a smile on her face, making her presentation a little less worrying.
As she exited the drive-through, Sarah glanced in her rearview(后视的) mirror at the next car approaching the coffee shop window. An idea began to form in her mind. Maybe she could do the same, pay it forward and brighten someone else’s morning. She decided to stick around, park her car and go back into the coffee shop. She approached the cashier and said, “I’d like to pay for the coffee of the person in the car behind me.” The cashier smiled and nodded, processing the payment. M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

W: You are welcome Mike.
(Text 10)
W: I’ve always had a strong interest in acting and singing but when I started performing in plays and musicals locally, I realized that my true love was acting. It was a tough journey, but I worked hard and never gave up. I was turned down for different roles in nearby states, but I never let it get me down. I made up my mind to succeed, and it finally paid off. Luckily, I now work all around the world with some great people.
I made a mistake early in my job by trying to compete with other actors to get the best parts. I regret that now. I’ve learned that it’s better to support and help others instead of trying to outdo them.
Now, I try to find challenging roles that are different from what I’ve done before. I take risks and I am open to new opportunities. For example, I turned down a part in a film because I thought the writing was bad, and it ended up winning many awards. It was a tough lesson, but it helped me develop my present style.
I’m grateful to do what I love every day, with some great people. I hope to continue to grow and improve as I take on new and exciting challenges in the future.

参考范文:
As she walked to her car, Sarah was lost in thought. How would the next driver react Would they continue the chain of goodwill She watched from her car as the driver behind her pulled up to the window. The cashier informed him that his coffee had already been paid for, and then something beautiful happened. The driver, a middle-aged man, smiled and said, “That’s wonderful! Please use the money I was going to spend to pay for the coffee of the car behind me.” One pays for the coffee of the person behind her, which sparks a chain of good deeds for the entire day.
The acts of kindness kept on coming. A young woman paid for the coffee of a tired mom with a baby in the back seat. A construction worker in a pickup truck covered the cost for a group of teenagers on their way to school. An elderly couple even got in on the action, paying for the coffee of a teacher on her way to work. And in the coffee shop, people began to talk about it. The line of cars in the drive-through grew longer as more people wanted to be a part of the phenomenon.
