From McDonald s to Sonic, fast food had a bad effect on my waistline and my budget. It was nothing to run to a drive-through to pick up a cold drink or a quick bite to eat. It was so easy to use my card for a small purchase. For me, I got a lot of satisfaction from fast food.
One day I realized that I was spending an incredible $40 a week on fast food. This was a lot of iced coffee and hamburgers! I decided to give myself a tight budget to reduce my consumption. Every Monday I placed an envelope with $20 in my purse. That was my fast food budget for the entire week. If there was anything left over at the end of the week, it would be mine to save or spend. If I spent all of the money during the week, there would be no more fast food that week.
The budget made me more mindful of my purchases. Instead of purchasing a large drink from Sonic, I would buy a small one. It was still satisfying but not nearly so expensive. Instead of eating a whole meal, I would pick the part that I actually wanted. I never really felt unhappy because it was a wise choice to spend or save with each purchase.
The envelope budget kept me honest. I had a clear idea of how much money was spent each week on fast food. I started to bring my lunches more often to save more money for the week. It was a fun challenge to see how much money I could save every week.
Changing the way I spent money on fast food not only helped my budget, but improved my weight. In the first month I was able to get rid of 5 pounds. Now I bring my lunch more often instead of buying it. I am not upset, but allowed to make positive choices to improve my life.
5.What can we know about the author according to the passage
A.She had no time to cook for herself. B.She was fond of fast food very much.
C.She lived with a small amount of money. D.She got some benefits from using her card.
6.Why did the author set her envelope budget
A.To buy fast food at a good price. B.To save money to buy more fast food.
C.To make fast food spending under control. D.To get rid of the habit of eating fast food.
7.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.It is unusual to make some changes. B.The budget means the pressure from life.
C.The envelope budget is good for health. D.It is hard to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
8.What is the passage mainly about
A.Why the author became addicted to fast food.
B.Why the author took the envelope budget seriously.
C.How fast food controlled the author s behavior.
D.How the envelope budget changed the author s life.
Unit 1 Food for thought
Part 1 Starting out & Understanding ideas
Ⅰ.1.gathered 2.marriage 3.symbol 4.opinion
5.horrible
suffer from...
3.suffering(s) 考查名词。

在and前的分句中,“who was born in Sichuan Province”是who引导的非限制性定语从句,主句是“My mom often 2 spicy dishes”,设空处是主句的谓语。
分析句子结构可知,that引导宾语从句;在该宾语从句中,“when he saw...animal”为when引导的时间状语从句,其中“how the Chinese...an animal”为how引导的宾语从句,作saw的宾语,设空处为该宾语从句的谓语。
encourage sb. to do sth.
use...to do sth. 故填to honor。
a mix of为固定短语,意为“……
分析句子结构可知,本句为主系表结构,“several tea bricks...Qing Dynasty”为主语,are是系动词,on show是表语,则空处应使用非谓语动词。
根据上文“sit in a modern teahouse(坐在现代茶馆里)”“taste different kinds of tea leaves(品尝不同种类的茶叶)”以及下文“have a cup(喝一杯)”可知本句为三个动作形成的并列结构,应使用并列连词连接三个动词,故填and。
准备 4.get along with与……
Chinese tea culture is divided into four parts that show the origin of it, the philosophy behind it, the connections with other cultures and customs and its modern development.
“Chinese tea culture is divided into four parts”是主句,后边是that引导的定语从句,four parts是先行词,关系词在从句中作主语;show后边是四个并列的名词短语,作show的宾语。

根据第二段第一、二句“Not all tomatoes are red. They can be yellow, orange, pink, white and so on.” 故选A。
和“As the plant grows taller, people may tie it to a stick.” The flowers turn into fruits.” “The next is the blooming stage. Flowers appear.” 故选A。
和“Tomatoes can be cooked, too.”
