I took a deep breath and walked through the front door, my arms full of groceries. A challenge lay ahead of me, someone who could hardly boil water: cooking the Easter Sunday dinner. What if I made everyone sick It could truly be our family s last super meal.
Making the holiday meal was my brother s job, not mine. I could never fill his shoes. Peter died last September at the age of 45 from a heart attack, but he d been a natural in the kitchen all his life. He planned every course in detail, from the crescent rolls to the Dutch apple pie.
My family was lost without him, and we went out to have dinner for Thanksgiving and ordered pizza for Christmas. By the time Easter rolled around, though, I couldn t bear the idea of another holiday surrounded by takeout(外卖食品) boxes. Peter would have hated that. To him, there was nothing more important than a meal made with love. So I convinced Mom to cook Easter dinner together with me. But we were terrible cooks.
I had been thinking what to cook for Easter dinner. I d bitten off more than I could chew. No one could do this half as well as Peter.
I stepped into the family room. Mom was still at church, but her newspaper was opened on the coffee table, to the sports section, as usual. She was a huge Notre Dame women s basketball fan, and the featured story was about the forward Devereaux Peters. I read the headline and nearly dropped my grocery bags, Filling Peters Shoes.
That afternoon, cooking in the kitchen, I didn t feel so alone. Mom and I pulled together and the Easter feast was not that bad. The ham may have been a little dry, but it was all made with love—just like Peter would have wanted.

An annoying brother or sister may break your toys, but he or she may help you when you are in trouble. A new study suggests that younger siblings might be good for your health.
Children who didn t welcome a baby brother or sister to the family before first grade had almost three times the likelihood of obesity compared with kids who experienced the birth of a sibling when they were around 3 to 4 years old, the study found.
“It is possibly because when there is a younger sibling in the family, a child might become more active—for example, running around more with their younger sibling,” said Julie Lumeng, a public health researcher at the University of Michigan.
“Maybe families are more likely to take the kids to the park when there is a younger sibling, or maybe the child is less likely to sit or watch TV when there is a younger sibling to ask them to join more active pretend play,” she added.
Mealtimes might also be different with a second kid at the table. Parents of an only child can often focus too much on what their kid eats, which can lead to bad eating habits, some previous research suggests.
“When parents use restrictive or pressure-to-eat feeding practices, children have an increased risk of being overweight,” said Jerica Berge, a researcher at the University of Minnesota.
“When a new child is introduced, parents may relax their focus on the older child s eating behaviors, making it possible for the older child to self-regulate their eating,” said Berge. “This self-regulation may lead to a healthier weight for the child with a sibling.”
For their study, Lumeng and colleagues followed 697 US children from birth through age 6. However, the authors acknowledged that their study lacked objectively measured birth weights and information on events such as a divorce, a move or a job loss in the family—all of which can influence the odds of children becoming obese. 28.How can an only child become, compared to children with younger siblings

A.Paying more attention to kids eating habits.
B.Using some restrictive feeding practices.
C.Allowing kids to control their eating.

The secret of eating less and being happy about it may have been cracked years ago—by McDonald s. According to a new study from Cornell University s Food and Brand Lab, small non-food rewards—like the toys in McDonald s Happy Meals—stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as food does.
The researchers, led by Martin Reimann, carried out a series of experiments to see if people would choose a smaller meal if it was paired with a non-food item.
They found that the majority of both kids and adults opted for a half-sized portion when the meal was combined with a prize. Both options were priced the same.
Even more interesting is that the promise of a future reward was enough to make adults choose the smaller portion. One of the prizes used was a lottery ticket, with a $10, $50 or $100 payout, and this was as effective as a tangible gift in persuading people to eat less.
“The fact that participants were willing to substitute the mere prospect of a relatively small monetary award for part of a food item is interesting,” says Reimann.
He theorizes that it is the emotional components of these intangible prizes that make them effective. In fact, vaguely-stated possibilities of winning a prize were more effective than options with hard odds included.
“One explanation for this finding is that possible awards may be more emotionally provoking than certain awards,” says Reimann. “The uncertainty of winning prizes provides added attraction and desirability through emotional ‘thrills’. The possibility of receiving an award also produces a state of hope—a state that is in itself psychologically rewarding.” In other words, there s a reason why people like to gamble.
How could this knowledge be used to help people eat more healthily
One possibility is a healthy option that offers the chance to win a spa weekend. Or maybe the reward of a half-sized portion could be a half-sized dessert to be claimed only on a future date. That would get you back in the restaurant and make you eat a little less.
32.What do we learn about McDonald s inclusion of toys in its Happy Meals
A.It may shed light on people s desire to crack a secret.
B.It has proved to be key to McDonald s business success.
C.It leads kids to find out what is hidden inside.
D.It may be a pleasant way for kids to reduce their food intake.
33.What is the finding of the researchers led by Martin Reimann
A.Reducing food intake is not that difficult if people go to McDonald s more.
B.Most kids and adults don t actually feel hungry when they eat half of their meal.
C.Eating a smaller portion of food does good to the health of kids and adults alike.
D.Most kids and adults will choose a smaller meal that comes with a non-food item.
34.What is more interesting in Martin Reimann s finding
A.Kids preferred an award in the form of money to one in the form of a toy.
B.Adults chose the smaller portion on the mere promise of a future award.
C.Both kids and adults felt satisfied with only half of their meal portions.
D.Neither children nor adults could resist the temptation of a free toy.
35.What can we infer from Martin Reimann s finding
A.People should eat much less if they wish to stay healthy and happy.
B.More fast food restaurants are likely to follow McDonald s example.
C.We can lead people to eat less while helping the restaurant business.
D.More studies are needed to find out the impact of emotion on behavior.

A Food Festival

A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, immediately announces she never did care for pie.
—Tenneva Jordan
I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, as the oldest and my mom s “grown-up” girl, I had to keep myself cool. I was in middle school after all. But when I got every chance and I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag(标签) and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(散开) presents, she would sigh and warn us, “There won t be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed.” Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In the past, the presents would pile up and spill over from under the tree, taking up a lot of space of the living room. I had heard the phrase, “Giving is better than receiving”, but I thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason why I couldn t get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. Some of us made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed, we lost our self-control.
“Here s another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, puzzled. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it was not mine. It was my mom s. A new tag had been put on it, with my name written in my mother s handwriting.
“Mom, I can t...”
“This is your present and it belongs to you,” said my mother.

That Christmas is quite meaningful to me.

上文“Are you confused about what to do next when you plan a birthday celebration...or try to help your family prepare for birthdays ”提到了计划和准备生日庆祝活动,下文“Here are some tips on birthday celebrations to get you started.”

上文“form a band”和“They can play as much music as you like.”
上文“Many people like to hold their parties at home.”提到了在家中举行聚会,下文“You can save a large amount of stress by finding a meeting place outside.”

42.A 根据本段第一句可知蛋糕在庆祝生日时是一个很重要的部分;根据“They don t get to experience the...many of us take for granted.” 故选A。B.好处;C.结果;D.问题。

45.D 根据本段中的“Becky Carroll...keeps in touch with the volunteers that work with these little children and helps children to get exactly what they...”及第四段中的“Once Becky finds out what a child would like”可知,此处指Becky Carroll联系志愿者,帮助孩子们得到他们想要(want)的东西。
及“they see some photos...next to their cakes”可知,这一组织的工作就是给每个符合条件的孩子一个蛋糕(cake)。
47.C 根据后文的“we forget that it s a really...thing for kids”可推知,此处是说Becky认为成年人往往不那么重视、喜欢(enjoy)过生日,所以他们会忘记过生日对孩子们的意义。故选C。A.

51.D 根据本段中的“Once Becky finds out what a child would like, she passes the...along to the volunteers.” A.计划;B.描述;C.目标。

54.A 根据本段中的“they can feel a sense of...and satisfaction”可知,设空处与空后的satisfaction并列作a sense of的宾语;根据空后的“when they see some photos of...children next to their cakes”再结合选项可推断A项(成就)符合语境,表示他们看到孩子们的照片后有一种成就感和满足感。
55.B 根据本段中的“they can feel a sense of...and satisfaction when they see some photos of...children next to their cakes”尤其是其中的“...and satisfaction”再结合Kakes 4 Kids给孩子们赠送生日蛋糕这件事推断孩子们是高兴的。
故填or。
故填to remember。

be based on为固定搭配,意为“以……为基础”,由此可知从句主语it与base之间为被动关系,应用被动语态,且从句主语为单数,故填is based。

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
A Food Festival
In order to promote Chinese food culture and enrich students campus life, our school held a food festival in the dining room last Sunday.
During the activity, the cooks from our school introduced traditional styles of cooking and cooked many famous dishes like stinky tofu and Kung Pao Chicken. Many students also cooked in person with the help of the cooks.
All the students present spoke highly of this activity which let them have a better understanding of China s rich and profound food culture.
第二节
One possible version:
“This is your present and it belongs to you,” said my mother. I was stopped by my mother s eager, joyful look. “Let s see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it.” It was a blow-dryer. Though this might seem nothing but a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was extremely surprised. In my world, where receiving largely outweighed giving, my mom s selfless behavior was impossible to understand. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas gift so that I could have one more present.
That Christmas is quite meaningful to me. I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my life, I can now understand my mom s actions. I see, actually, she was not “giving up her Christmas present” as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom s simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom s giving, I will choose to give in my life.
