In many cultures, a girl s “big day” is recognized as her wedding day. But in the Philippines, many girls don t have to wait that long. Eighteenth birthdays are a formal celebration, called “the debut”, which means the girls enter the age of adulthood.
“I actually didn t like the idea of celebrating a debut because I was really boyish when I was younger,” explained Hannah Cafe, a recent debutante. “But when I heard my mom s plans, they changed my mind. They brought out a different side of me—the one that wanted to be treated like a princess.”
Traditionally, the debutante wears a grand dress and is surrounded by her family and friends throughout a program that includes a dance by a group of people, an “18 roses” segment(部分), where the important men in the debutante s life present her with a rose and invite her to dance, and an “18 candles” segment, where the important women in her life give individual speeches and good wishes.
But many debutantes today introduce modern elements to the celebration. “Instead of having the regular ‘l8 roses’ and ‘l8 candles’, we used ‘l8 carnations(康乃馨)’ and ‘18 sparklers’, ” described Hannah.
During the “18 flowers” segment, it tends to get more emotional during the father-daughter dance. But Hannah laughed at the question of getting emotional during this part of her debut. “Actually, my father was so energetic that he had everyone bursting out laughing.”
Hannah s debut had other additional 18-themed segments, like the “18 gifts”, but her favorite moment wasn t even part of the program she knew of. “My favorite part was the surprise song prepared by my classmates. I really appreciated the fact that they spent time practicing it and kept it secret from me. My eyes got teary on that occasion when they started singing.”
“A girl s debut marks a very important day in her life,” said Hannah. “That s something she gets to treasure forever.”

On Monday, 2023, people across Kenya took part in the country s first national tree-planting holiday. The holiday was created by Kenya s president to encourage people to plant trees as part of a plan to fight the climate crisis.
Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife. But large areas of Kenya s forests have been destroyed. Those trees would normally help absorb carbon dioxide. 1
Currently, just 7% of Kenya is covered by trees. Kenya has been seriously affected by the climate crisis. It has been hit by a severe drought, and the area s rain patterns have been changing for the worse.
An app was created to help organize the tree planting. 2 It helps people collect seedlings, find places to plant trees, and record their efforts. The app will also help the government track how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country.
On Monday, people all over Kenya turned out in large numbers to participate in the holiday. In the capital, Nairobi, hundreds of people joined in, even though it was raining. 3 But the government had a goal of planting several hundred million more before the end of December.
4 But some citizens were upset because the holiday was announced too late for them to be able to take part. Still others have criticized the government for a decision made earlier this year to end a ban on cutting down older trees. 5 Some hope that it will happen every year.
A.Most Kenyans supported the event.
B.It s not yet clear how many trees were planted.
C.It s a greenhouse gas that causes the climate crisis.
D.Even so, people were very excited about the holiday.
E.The app is called JazaMiti, meaning “filling with trees”.
F.Government leaders led planting efforts all over the country.
G.To prepare for the day, the government got young trees ready.

根据倒数第二段中的“My favorite part was the surprise song prepared by my classmates.”

3.element n.
5.additional adj.

Traditionally, the debutante wears a grand dress and is surrounded by her family and friends throughout a program that includes a dance by a group of people, an “18 roses” segment, where the important men in the debutante s life present her with a rose and invite her to dance, and an “18 candles” segment, where the important women in her life give individual speeches and good wishes.
“that includes...and good wishes”为that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a program;两个where分别引导两个定语从句“where the important men...to dance”和“where the important women...good wishes”,分别修饰“‘18 roses’ segment”和“‘18 candles’ segment”。
空前“Those trees would normally help absorb carbon dioxide.”
空前“An app was created to help organize the tree planting.”
空后“But the government had a goal of planting several hundred million more before the end of December.(但政府的目标是在12月底之前再种植数亿棵树。)”
4.A 细节句。空后“But some citizens were upset because the holiday was announced too late for them to be able to take part.”
空前“Still others have criticized...cutting down older trees.” 空后“Some hope that it will happen every year.”
