Brody Ridder attends the Academy Charter School in Westminster, Colorado. When he got his yearbook(毕业班年刊), he went up to people and asked them to sign his yearbook but most of them refused. He collected only two or three names from classmates and two notes from his teachers. So, Brody wrote a yearbook note to himself, “Hope you make more friends.”
Reading that note broke his mother's heart. She took a photo of the note and posted it to a Facebook group for parents at the school. The post made its way to three high schoolers: Simone Lightfoot, Logan South and Joanna Cooper. They spent hours discussing the problem and finding ways to help. “It's so fun to have everyone sign the yearbook, but for this kid few people have signed their names in his yearbook. It's just heartbreaking,” Lightfoot said. They all started planning that the next day they were going to sign this kid's yearbook.
The three rounded up as many students as possible to sign Brody's yearbook even though none of them had ever met the three high schoolers. According to the teens, people were lining up waiting to fill in the blanks in Brody's yearbook. Many of the more than 100 signatures included paragraphs with words of encouragement, advice and even phone numbers. And then right after that, all the other classmates signed Brody's yearbook.
The teens said they hoped that the small friendly act could encourage other kids to be kind. “It makes me feel better now. I don't know how to explain it. It makes me feel better from the bottom of my heart,” Brody said. “It makes me feel like there's hope for the school, there's hope for humanity and there're a lot of good kids in this world,” his mother said.

Why can friendships be hard Because often people aren't as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people end up getting hurt.
Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish(自私的) to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should guard against.
The best thing to remember when you are a friend of anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated. This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friend everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes.
Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are issues that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these issues so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Situations like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are issues that will probably arise in one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship.
28.Why could problems with friendships appear
A.One is selfish. B.One is alone.
C.One is too anxious. D.One is too busy.
29.What's the first and most important thing to be other people's friend
A.Not to hurt your friends' feelings.
B.To give your friends whatever you have.
C.To treat your friends as fairly as possible.
D.Not to think of your own needs any more.
30.What is the text mainly about
A.The meaning of friendships.
B.The importance of friendships
C.The advantages of friendships.
D.The problems with friendships.
31.What may follow the last paragraph of the text
A.How to make many friends.
B.How to keep friends happy.
C.How to treat friends correctly.
D.How to solve friendship issues.

As seabird biologist Bonnie Slaton slides off a small boat and walks through waist-high water, the brown pelicans (鹈鹕) spread their wings overhead until she reaches Raccoon Island. The narrow island is a small piece of land separating the American state of Louisiana from the Gulf of Mexico. During the seabird breeding(繁殖) season, the place, one of the few remaining places of safety for the pelicans, is full of noise.
13 years ago, there were 15 low-lying islands with breeding areas for Louisiana's state bird. However, today only about six islands in southeastern Louisiana have brown pelican nests and the rest have disappeared underwater.
Slaton and other scientists set up cameras to observe pelican nests on the island. The cameras show that in recent years the pelicans have faced some natural disasters. The main killer of them is flooding, which can wash away all the nests, as happened in April 2021. The disappearing islands are the location of a story of successful conservation. For many years, scientists have worked to bring the pelicans back from totally dying off.
Mike Carloss is a state wildlife biologist in Louisiana. He said he never saw brown pelicans as a child in the 1960s. Their populations had been killed by the use of DDT, a kind of farm chemical. It thinned eggshells and prevented pelicans from giving birth to young birds. The beloved birds were completely gone from Louisiana, only appearing on the state flag. But a long-running effort to save them led to the birds' return. After DDT was stopped in the U.S. in 1972, biologists brought young pelicans from nearby Florida to let them inhabit the empty islands across the Gulf of Mexico. More than 1,200 pelicans have been set free in southeastern Louisiana over 13 years.
The brown pelicans can live more than 20 years. So, the final effect of disappearing breeding areas is uncertain and it will still take time to become clear. And the future for pelicans is uncertain on the islands.
32.What is a killer of brown pelicans
A.The island movement.
B.The underwater noise.
C.The increase of human population.
D.The disappearance of breeding areas.
33.Why did the scientists set up cameras
A.To stop illegal hunting.
B.To watch pelicans' home.

As English learners, you often feel anxious when you have to speak English in front of others. 36 Here are some ways to help you build confidence in speaking English.
Adopt a practice and repetition routine (惯例).When something becomes natural for you, you begin to feel confident of doing it. And the only way you can arrive at this “natural” way of doing things is through practice and repetition. 37 So write down what you may talk about and then practise saying it aloud and repeatedly before an English meeting.
38 You may lose confidence when your spoken English is misunderstood by listeners. In most cases, it's because the listeners are not used to your accent or you speak too fast. There is no doubt that speaking slowly is easy to achieve.
Don't run away from uncomfortable situations. It is natural for any human being to avoid uncomfortable situations when possible, but you will build your confidence in the uncomfortable zones. 39
All in all, learning to speak English confidently doesn't happen overnight. 40 As the saying goes, “No pains, no gains.” As long as you make enough efforts, you will surely improve your spoken English, and then you will naturally become confident of speaking English in front of others.
A.Purposely speak more slowly.
B.Try to understand your listeners.
C.It takes time and you need to make continuous efforts.
D.It's the same principle as speaking English confidently.
E.It is common to make some mistakes when you speak English.
F.However, going from an unconfident speaker to a confident one is possible.
G.The secret is to be fully prepared, and then you will overcome the uncomfortable situations.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Paul and I were on our school basketball team, The Lions. We loved basketball and were both huge fans of the NBA. When we weren't playing on the court, we were watching a game on TV. My favourite player was LeBron James. Paul's favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, a guy who played for the Charlotte Hornets, and we actually agree that they are both champions.
Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. During all those hours of making jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said, “If Bogues could make it, why not me ” Our coach was not so sure. Paul had to try many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. I knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. However, Paul didn't get a chance.
Then came the big day. We were playing our main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record of this season had been perfect. They hadn't lost a single game. Despite our best efforts, we were still 10 points behind The Bears. Without much time left, the last quarter began. Unfortunately, our team members got injured one after another.
All hope fell on me. Unfortunately, a player and I crashed into each other. With pain racing through my body, my knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The doctor put an ice pack on my knee, but it was still painful. Obviously, I could not play any more. The coach gave a deep sigh and murmured in a low voice, “We have no more players.”
  注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“I think I can give it a try,” a determined voice came from the crowd.

Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court.

第二节
One possible version:
“I think I can give it a try,” a determined voice came from the crowd. Everyone turned around and all eyes rested on Paul. He bowed his head, a bit embarrassed. Looking at him up and down, the coach shook his head. “Give him a chance, Coach!” I begged. “What have we got to lose Let Paul play!” another player said. Seeing the coach still hesitant, Paul stepped forward and raised his voice, “Trust me, Coach! I won't let you down!” His eyes were burning with eagerness. “Well, it's your turn to shine,” the coach finally agreed.
Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court. He was like an energetic lion. And clearly, all the extra hours that he'd spent practising alone paid off. No one could keep up with his energy and speed, or steal the ball from his hand. He made shot after shot. When the final whistle sounded, we won by two points. The crowd burst into deafening applause and cheers. We all hugged Paul and threw him into the air. At that moment, he was our “Tyrone Bogues”, a hero and champion in our heart.
place of the forehead. For girls, it was pink and purple with a small seashell. He heard someone say, “Cool!” A few of the classmates nodded enthusiastically. “My grandma designs clothes, too,” he explained, feeling a burst of hope. “She helped and we made headbands for everyone!” The whole class buzzed with excitement. Chris grinned. Now things finally felt right!
