When Song Jing visits a museum, she always spends a lot of time in the area where ancient books are put on show. She loves enjoying the wisdom hidden in those ancient books and pays attention to how they are bound (装订) and presented.
“It’s more like a habit developed because of my job,” said Song. This 34-year-old “book doctor” has been working in the restoration division (修复部门) for ancient books at the National Library of China in Beijing for nine years.
Song made her way to the job after finishing her studies at Peking University in 2015. Since then, she has restored more than 100 ancient cultural relics (文物).
In the past two years, Song and her team have worked on restoring a copy of Yongle Dadian, a set of books created by Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty. After taking the challenge at the beginning of 2022, Song and her team spent six months researching and deciding on how to restore the books. “Because most books from Yongle Dadian have been damaged (损坏),” Song said.
According to Song, to restore ancient books, they need to collect lots of information on their original (原来的) binding style and repair (修理) them. What’s more, the colour of the ancient books has changed, and it is difficult to find new materials to match the colour.
In the past, restorers had to depend on their experience to choose proper materials for a project. Now, as technology develops, they are able to use a new method to finish the task. However, technology can only help so much, as ancient book restoration still requires hands-on skills, including cutting and brushing paper and binding.

The key to raising (抚养) a happy child is to allow them to be unhappy. It might sound strange, but it is true.
Parents like to find different ways to make their children happy. But in fact, children know how to be happy and how to find joy. However, happiness is not an all-the-time feeling. Parents often have trouble accepting (接受) that “children can be angry, sad, unhappy in some way”.
When a child is unhappy, parents often naturally look to cheer them up. They might offer chocolate cake, or a trip to the park to run around. There’s nothing wrong with doing nice things for kids when they’re unhappy, but the problem is that parents still don’t find out what’s making the child sad.
Being afraid of feeling bad can cause problems. Kids can be sorry about those feelings, and have thoughts like, “I'm angry. I must be bad. There must be something wrong with me. That’s why parents need to accept that their children can’t be pleased all the time and that the children need to learn to deal with (处理) those feelings. Parents could ask an unhappy child to talk about their feelings and show them their understanding.
So it’s important to let children know that it’s to have these bad feelings, and that “Mum or Dad is always there for me even when I’m unhappy”. If they know this and learn to control their feelings, they will grow up to be strong and successful.
( ) 34. According to the passage, what do parents often find hard to do
