Homei Miyashita, a professor at a Japanese university, has been researching electrical stimulation(电刺激) as a way to change the way people enjoy taste for years. In 2016, he developed a special fork that could make any food taste saltier. And last year, he became more famous for his lickable(可以舔的) TV screen. Now, his new invention—a pair of smart chopsticks that can make food taste better—has been shown to the world.
The smart chopsticks will be very popular in Japan, where the traditional food tastes salty. The average Japanese person eats about 10 g of salt a day. This could cause people to get sick. The chopsticks use electrical stimulation and a mini-computer. The device(装置) sends sodium ions(钠离子) from the food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth of the user. Then they create a stronger feeling of saltiness.
Ai Sato, who developed the chopsticks with Miyashita, explains, “If we try not to take more salt in a traditional way, we may have to give up some of our favorite food. Or we have to choose to eat tasteless food.”
Now, Miyashita and his partner are improving their chopsticks. They hope to put the chopsticks on the market as early as next year.

When looking at a pair of old chopsticks, most people would see nothing but waste. But Felix Bock would see boxes, tables, shelves and so on. In 2016, Felix Bock, a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia, Canada, found out people threw away about 100,000 pairs of chopsticks every day in Vancouver alone. He thought he needed to do something. So he started the company ChopValue in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools and shopping centers in Canada and the US and turned them into furniture and other artworks. Now in its fifth year, with the rapid growth of the company, Bock employs (雇用) 40 people. By using his special press machines, he has recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks. Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind ChopValue will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay a small sum (金额) of money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. Bock doesn't stop there. Now he is busy taking his business to more countries and has set up factories for recycling local wood like chopsticks in 10 countries.
