Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came
Section A(3a~3c)说课稿
Good morning, my dear judges. It’s my great honor to be here to share my teaching design. Today my topic is “The Storm Brought People Closer Together”. I divide it into 7 parts, including the analysis of teaching material, learners, teaching goals, important and difficult points, teaching and learning methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design.
Part I Analysis of teaching material
First, let’s start with the teaching material. The topic is about rainstorm, which is taken from Section A 3a-3c, Unit5, Grade8. It’s a reading lesson. It mainly talks about people helping each other after the storm hit Alabama. After learning the passage, students can care for the society and daily life.
Part II Analysis of learners
Now let’s look at the learners.
As for the students in Grade 8. They have learned the new words and phrases in the last class. They have the ability to understand sentences and get the main idea of a passage. In this lesson, students will practice their reading skills.
Part III Teaching goals
As for the teaching goals , I set 4 parts.
First, students will grasp the key words, phrases and sentences. For example, wind, wood, light, flashlights, candles and so on.
Second, students will learn to predict the main idea in the reading by looking at the pictures, the title and the first sentence.
Third, they can understand, analyze and compare in reading.
Fourth, students will learn to cooperate and communicate with others, and have the spirit of cooperation.
Part IV Important and difficult points
Important point: Learn to master key words, phrases and sentences.
Difficult point: Learn to get details and finish the tasks by reading carefully.
Part V Teaching and learning methods
I mainly applied approaches like situational teaching method, communicative language teaching and task-based teaching method.
About learning methods, I’ll use cooperative learning method.
Part VI Teaching procedures
Now let’s come to the most important part, the teaching procedures. I divide it into 6 steps.
Step 1 Lead in
After greeting the students, I will show a video and ask the students:
1.Have you ever experienced a rainstorm?
2.How do we know when a rainstorm is coming
And then we will play a game to review the new words in the last class.
It aims to lead up the topic and set the foundation for this lesson.
Step2 Pre-reading
Look at the title and the picture and make predictions.
1. What can you see in the picture What happened
2. How can a storm bring people closer
The purpose is to develop students' ability to predict.
Step 3 While-reading
It contains two activities.
The first one: Fast reading
Students are required to go through the whole passage and finish two tasks. Task1:Match the paragraphs with the main ideas.
Task 2:Analyze the structure of the passage.
The purpose is to improve students’ fast reading skills.
Second one : Careful reading
Students need to read the passage again and finish 3 tasks with their partners or group members.
Task 1: Read Para. 1&2 and answer the questions.
1. What was the weather like before the heavy rainstorm started
2. How did Ben’s family know the storm was coming
3. What did Ben’s family do before the storm
Task 2: Read Para. 3 and fill in the blanks.
What were Ben’s family doing during the storm
Task 3: Read the last paragraph and write down true or false.
The purpose is to develop students’ reading skills-scanning and practice their ability in cooperation.
Step4 Post-reading
Here, I will set two activities.
Activity 1: Complete the sentences using information from the passage.
Activity 2: Show some pictures and discuss the questions:
What other things can bring people closer together How can we help each other in times of difficulty
The purpose is to practice students' abilities of summarizing and speaking.
Step5 Summary
Make a summary about the key words, phrases and sentences.
Guide students to summarize the structure of the passage.
Step6 Homework
Based on students’ different situations, I will set two tasks. They need to choose one of them.
Level A: Draw a mind-map of the passage.
Level B: Try to retell the passage with your partner.
Part VII Blackboard design
